Delivered to herself this time.
A stork named 'Yaren' has been coming to the boat of Adem Yılmaz
in Lake Uluabat, Bursa, every year for nine years, during annual
migration. This year Yaren and her mate arrived on 5 March. Later in
March, though, coronavirus stay-at-home restrictions were imposed on
those over 65 like Yılmaz, so his friendship with Yaren is on 'pause' as
the stork, along with her mate, tend to their 3 newborn chicks.
Yaren has become the mascot for Eskikaraağaç village in Bursa's
Karacabey district, and the village, on a peninsula in Lake Uluabat,
has been nicknamed 'Stork Village'. This year, for the first time,
the 'expectant' Yaren arrived with her mate and settled into a nest with
a view of the lake. After a month sitting on her eggs, Yaren's chicks
broke through their shells and the event was broadcast live via a
camera set up by the Karacabey municipality.
The Uluabat Stork Club (members only).
Yılmaz reflected on his friendship with Yaren: "Last year Yaren had
four chicks and this year three. She'll tend them for a week or so
and then come to my boat. Yaren and her mate take turns sitting
on the chicks and flying off to get food for them. After a while the
chicks will be able to get their own food."
Essential Yaren cannnot WFH.
