Soon to be underwater.
A dam is under construction in Artvin's Yusufeli district in the far north
east of Turkey. When completed the dam will be 270-meters high and
will be Turkey's highest and the world's 3rd highest double-curved dam.
However (!), Yusufeli and 4 of its villages will be underwater so for the
7th time in its 150-year history Yusufeli is being moved.
The ambience won't be quite the same...
A total of 1,638 homes will be built for the move and 1,600 mature
trees and 16,000 bushes will be planted, as well. The town of Yusufeli
will move to the Yansıtıcılar location and the citizens of the 69-year-old
district are making preparations. In addition to new homes, there will
also be a new graveyard so about 500 people have applied to have their
loved ones' graves move to the new cemetery.
Progress!
