In simpler times...
The suit between world-famous designer and restorer Rüya Mocan (73)
and her cousin Esra Birgen Shah (83), the former wife of the Hyderabad
(India) Nizam Bereket Shah, has been concluded. A court on the Princes'
Islands in Istanbul found in favor of Mocan, who is the granddaughter of
former Ottoman Prime Minister Said Paşa and Minister Fethi Ahmet
Paşa, and the daughter of Democrat Party parliamentarian Şevket
Mocan.
The court ruled that Birgen must pay Mocan $700,000, plus interest.
In 1994, Mocan lent Birgen $4.5 million and Birgen paid back all but
$700,000 of the loan. In 2011, Mocan took Birgen to court to recover
the outstanding amount.

In 1959 Birgen married Bereket Shah, whose mother was Dürrüşehvar
Sultan, the daughter of the last Ottoman Caliph Abdülmecit Efendi.
Birgen and Shah were married for 20 years before divorcing. Shah
later married Manolya Onur, a Turkish beauty queen. Manolya Onur
and Esra Birgen, who along with Mocan, owns Sedef Island, one of
the Princes' Islands, had their own court fight over Bereket Shah's
properties before Onur died suddenly in October 2017.

As for her alleged debt to Mocan, Birgen claimed in court that Mocan
got $4.5 million from the sale of some lots and plots and put the money
in Birgen's mother's bank account. In court, however, Birgen did not
produce the records of her payments to Mocan since 1994. During
the 8-year trial judges changed often, extending the case until now.
Birgen must now pay Mocan about $1 million to account for the
disputed $700,000 and the accompanying interest.
Sedef Island is the smallest of the Princes' Islands.
