TNT History Mini-Series: German 1918 Caucasus Mission/Part I

//Ed. note: In 1928, Retired Colonel Friedrich von der
Holtz looked back ten years on his role in the German
expedition to the Caucasus in June 1918, in an article in
a German  newspaper.  The Turkish General Staff had
the article  translated into Ottoman Turkish and
published in its "Askeri Mecmuası" (Military Journal)
in November 1928.

von Kressenstein, who had served in the Ottoman Army
on the Palestine Front in 1916-17.

Herewith TNT presents the transcribed-translated version

Lessons from War History
Why Did We Go to Transcaucasia in 1918?

Ten years have passed since we undertook one of Germany's most
controversial operations of the Great War.  This was the expedition to
Transcaucasia, which came at great cost but with little to show for it.

General von Gleich recently wrote in an article about our Caucasus
policy that:

"The most amazing aspect is that even in June 1918 there was still a
'Pollyanna-esque' hope with regard to the Western Front, yet the war
situation for the Austrians was serious, as it was for the Turks in Iraq,
and Palestine was more or less a calamity, while the Bulgarians
were being beaten.

As for the Caucasus, even if one claims that the Turkish and German
forces operating there were insignificant, it was completely illogical
for us to pursue expeditionary plans aimed at having one ally butter
the bread of another but based ultimately on insufficient forces
available for the task at hand.

Even now, it is still difficult to discern whether this policy, which calls
to mind Alexander the Great, was the direct product of the Foreign
Ministry or whether it was the consequence of the Foreign Ministry's
weakness vis-a-vis the military policymakers.  Perhaps we will never
know."

General Gerold von Gleich click here for background.
He served in the Ottoman Army at Baghdad and after
the war became a physics professor, specializing in
relativity.

When one looks at Transcaucasia, I myself conclude that, for the most
part, the German General Staff  undertook operations beyond its
capabilities in the Great War and, consequently, the forces required for
decisive victory were weakened.  Essentially, the proper and informed
approach for any soldier is that when opposing a number of enemy
elements one should gather all his forces and attack the strongest of the
enemy elements and ensure, to the extent possible, that not even one
of his battalions is left out of the attack.  The focal point for criticisms
of the General Staff always center on this aspect.

In the Great War, the problem of leadership and administration for us
was that we were mostly entering new and unfamiliar situations, so it
became impossible to reconcile these problems with just great zeal and
force, even in simple circumstances.  Many times, both tactically and
strategically, decisions that ignored and even went contrary to lessons
learned in old battles needed to be made.

This is exactly what happened in the Transcaucasia expedition! In June
1918, certainly it was not an easy decision for the German General
Staff to send a contingent of 3,000 troops of various disciplines to the
land of the Golden Fleece.  The impetus for the General Staff's decision
was not the beautiful eyes of Circassian girls nor was it plans for
fantasy victories.  On the contrary, the motivation came from the most
basic and practical perspectives, which would turn the basis for
wartime leadership and administration on its head.

Pes artık: Cenaze aracını çalıp uyuşturucu almaya gitmişler
                       Akarsu: "Practice Makes Perfect"

Samat Akarsu, a drug addict who lives in Demirköy district of
Kırklareli province and friends S.T. and U.V. stole a city hearse from
the municipal garage on the second day of the recent Ramazan holiday,
when a lockdown was in effect because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Akarsu and his friends drove the hearse to Çorlu district in Tekirdağ
province to buy drugs. (!)

The three amigos passed through lockdown checkpoints along the
way, saying that they were transporting a dead body.  However, on
the return trip the Gendarmerie stopped the hearse in Lüleburgaz
district and took all three into custody.  After questioning, Akarsu
was detained, while S.T. and U.V. were released.

In his statement to police, Akarsu, who used to work for the Demirköy
municipality, explained that "after I took the hearse I picked up U.V.
and S.T. along the way.  They didn't know I was going to buy drugs.
When we got to Çorlu I pulled into a gas station and went to buy the
drugs.  On the way back the Gendarmerie stopped us.  I bought 22
capsules of drugs to last me for 6-7 months. I didn't steal the hearse,
(I just borrowed it)."

Van'ın koronavirüsle imtihanı: Sokakta değil evde bulaşıyor
Governor-Mayor Mehmet Emin 'Don't Know' Bilmez longs
for a good night's sleep.

There have been a lot of startling headlines coming out of Van in
regard to the COVID-19 outbreak. Here are just a few:

"They went for a death consolation visit and hid those who came from
outside the city."

"Village chiefs hid corona-carriers."

"They called 112 (911) asking for permission to go to the hospital but
actually went to visit their relatives for the holiday."

"They escaped from hospital corona treatment."

So far there have been 480 cases of COVID-19 in Van, more than
half of which occurred after death consolation visits. Up to now,
66,000 people (!) have been quarantined and currently there are
18,000 in quarantine.

In order to find out what is going on in Van, we called the governor,
Mehmet Emin Bilmez (whose surname means 'don't know'!), who
is also the mayor of Van city.  Governor-Mayor Bilmez explained
that "the coronavirus doesn't spread on the streets of Van, but rather
in the homes where 'nuclear families' regularly amount to 15-20
children and with the rest of the relatives that number increases 3-4
times.  If one of them is 'positive' the entire family gets infected."

Yer: Adana... Gelin görümcesinin 160 bin lira değerindeki ziynet ...
Loving sisters-in-law Fatma & Sezen.

In Yüreğir, Adana, Sezen N. went with her family to their vacation
house and gave her house key to her downstairs neighbor to water
the plants while Sezen hanım was away.  However, when the neighbor
went to check on the plants, the door to Sezen hanım's home was open
so the neighbor called police.

After looking at 100 security camera images, police focused on a car
on a nearby street that he been driven in the wrong direction.  The
car's owner İsmail P. was taken into custody and told police he had
rented his car to Süleyman A. (26) and Mehmet A. (32), who, in
turn, claimed they had given the car to Ahmet Aktürk (24).

Aktürk confessed to police that he, Bülent Ünal (38) and Ziver
Akkurt (49) had stolen the safe containing gold and cash from Sezen
hanım's home.  Once in custody, Ünal told police that his 'close friend'
Fatma Sakar (32), Sezen hanım's sister-in-law (!), had given him the
key to Sezen hanım's apartment .  Police then arrested Sakar and she,
along with Aktürk, Akkurt and Ünal were jailed.

The stolen valuables were returned to Sezen hanım.

Sanayici kardeşlerin kavgası emniyete sıçradı - Son Dakika
                 Brothers in higher learning.

Five years ago, brothers Mustafa and Adnan Demirci, owners of
the DÇT Iron & Steel Wire Company in Arnavutköy, Istanbul, decided
to establish a private university.  As construction of the university
buildings proceeded, though, the brothers had a falling out, filing law
suits against one another.

The first incident between the two that involved the police occurred
on 28 February 2018.  When Adnan bey went to the factory to get his
belongings a fight erupted and Mustafa bey fired 7 shots at Adnan bey.
During the fight, Adnan bey fell off a chair and broke his shoulder.  He
got a medical report to verify his injury and went to the police station
to file a complaint.

According to Adnan bey, police chief Haluk Öztürk pressured him to
turn over shares in the factory to him, so Adnan bey filed a complaint
against Öztürk, who claimed that this was retribution because he refused
to give Adnan bey 'special treatment'.   Nevertheless, an indictment was
prepared against Öztürk, with an attendant jail sentence of from 6
months to 2 years.

Adnan bey also filed complaints about 10 other policemen and accused
two of them, Kemal Uçar and Mahmut Demirkol, of damaging his goods
and threatening and insulting him.  In turn, Uçar filed a complaint
against Adnan bey for 'insulting'.  In the end, 3 policemen were sent to
other duty stations.
