The municipality of Bitlis has begun to use water from Lake Van to
disinfect its avenues and streets. Whether or not the lake's water is
effective against the coronavirus remains to be seen, but Dr. Erdal
Öğün of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University's Molecular Biology and
Genetics Department has made the following statement:
"The lake's water is alkali, with a pH of between 9.65 and 9.70,
indicating that it could be effective against the virus. Because of
Lake Van's alkali content pathogenic bacteria is contained and
prevented from growing. We have conducted experiments in this
regard but the results are not clear and definitive. More work
needs to be done. There isn't much in the scientific literature
about the effectiveness of caustic (sodium hydroxide) lake water
against viruses."
Bitlis is on Lake Van's western side.
