"Beat & Release": 17 Year Olds "Marry" (Sort of) But Groom's Family Gets Hoodwinked, in Susurluk

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 31 October 2023)

                           "Three, two, one...launch!"

Groom O.K. and his bride D.K., both 17 years old, married in Konya on
3 August with their parents' consent.  Preparations then began for a
flashy wedding in O.K.'s hometown of Susurluk in Balıkesir province,
scheduled for 19-21 October.  In connection with this event, the groom's
family paid a 250,000 (nearly $9,000) "bride price" to D.K.'s father.

The two families came together in Susurluk on 19 October.  However (!),
after the ceremony where gold was pinned onto the bride during the
second day of the marriage celebration, the bride's family claimed they
had to return to Konya because of a relative's death.  The groom's family
was suspicious of the other side's apparent urgency and asked that the
gold be left in Susurluk.  Ultimately, the two sides agreed to split the gold.

Early golden anniversary
for D.K.

Bride D.K. though, went back to hubby O.K. and alleged that her family
had previously tried to marry her off to other men for money.  However
(!), she changed her statement to police in Susurluk again, claiming that
she had been forced at gunpoint and beaten so that she would marry O.K.
Then, D.K.  went back to Konya with her family.

O.K. and his family filed a police complaint against D.K. and her family
for fraud.  He explained that "the family took the bride and jewelry back
to Konya.  The bride said that her family had repeatedly had her do this
trick and she wanted to be saved from it, so she came back to me.  But
then she changed her story and accused us.  She said that when we both
got on my motorcycle her foot got burned.  It's a custom for us to throw
the bride up in the air on "kına gecesi" (night before the wedding when
the bride's fingers and toes are painted with henna).   She claimed that
when she was thrown in the air her head hit a piece of wood and her
eye swelled up. Also, she claimed that I pulled the silicon beads from her
hair.  She hurt my pride and I'm down on life."

                                         "Kına gecesi"

O.K.'s father Doğan K. (37) asserted that he had been hoodwinked out
of 1 million TL (about $35,000) for the "bride price", wedding expenses
and the cost of the gold.

A mandatory accessory for any Turkish wedding.

In Nazilli district of Aydın province, a wedding reception was held to
celebrate the marriage of Emrah Kabakoğlu and Gülseren Coşkun the
evening before last.  However, as the night wore on, a dispute
erupted between the bride's side and the groom's over which song
should be played.  (!)

In the course of the ensuing fight, the groom's uncle Oktay Kabakoğlu
(43) was stabbed in the heart with a piece of broken glass and the groom's
older brother Mehmet Kabakoğlu (51) was stabbed with a knife.  Eşref
Koç (27) suffered a head wound from a beer bottle (!).

Gendarmerie and medics responded to the mayhem and the injured men
were taken to Nazilli State Hospital, where Oktay bey passed away despite
doctors' best efforts.  Y.C. (21), M.T. (25), E.C. (48) and B. C. (41) were

In Sultangazi, Istanbul, a fight erupted between those in a wedding
convoy and some motorcycle couriers.  One of the wedding guests
noticed that a courier was taking a picture of a wedding convoy
cars' license plates and attacked the courier, who summoned his
courier buddies to the scene.

Onlookers intervened to quell the fight but shortly thereafter
members of the wedding convoy, including the groom, caught up
to the couriers and beat them up.  All of the mayhem was captured
on the cellphones of (other) onlookers.

TNT Salutes the 100th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic and Its Founder Atatürk - He Made a Strong First Impression in Erzurum, 1919

   Watercolor painting by Burhan Özer

In the summer of 1919, British Col. Alfred "Toby" Rawlinson was in
Erzurum inspecting the progress of Ottoman Army disarmament in
the aftermath of WWI.  Coincidentally, Mustafa Kemal Paşa (later,
of course, Atatürk) happened to be in Erzurum, too, preparing for the
congress there that was a stepping stone toward the eventual
establishment of the Turkish Republic on 29 October 1923.

The two met and this is Rawlinson's description of the man who sat
opposite him, as recorded in his book "Adventures in the Near East
1918-1922", published in London in 1923:

Mustafa Kemal Paşa (Pages 188, 189, 190): "There now arrived at
Erzurum the Inspector-General of the Turkish Eastern Armies, who
has since become the famous Mustafa Kemal Paşa, the great Turk, the
remarkable nature of whose striking personality never fails to impress
itself on all who are brought into contact with him.

European rather than Asiatic in type, with fair hair and blue eyes,
Kemal is more Teutonic than Turkish in appearance.  He has read much
and traveled widely, and is thoroughly competent to give a considered
opinion on all subjects of general interest either at the present day or in
the history of the past.  A man of great strength of character and very
definite and practical views as to the rightful position of his race in the
comity of nations, he is no seeker after personal fame or advancement,
but is imbued with a deep sense of duty, which causes him to place his
country’s interest before all others and to labour unceasingly towards
those ends which he considers to be most to her advantage.

This is the secret of his remarkable success in the creation of the Turkish
National Party, of which he himself is the moving and controlling spirit.
It is by means of the undoubted earnestness and loyalty of his patriotism
that he has been able to weld together the many divergent interests of his
countrymen, and to lay the foundations of a Turkish democratic power
which cannot fail to dominate the field of Eastern politics in the near
future.

His military training is of German origin, but it is more than doubtful
whether his sympathies today have any inclination towards either
Germany or Russia, except in so far as the support of those countries
may be made to serve in the forwarding of Turkish interests.  Many
scurrilous reports have been circulated from time to time with regard
to his private life, but I have never observed the slightest foundation for
them, though, I have had every opportunity of doing so had any such
existed.  His general bearing, though invariably courteous, is not such
as to encourage social intercourse, but it is impossible to doubt either
the sincerity of his convictions or the tenacity with which he is prepared
to support what he considers to be the legitimate aims of his country.

During the month of June ((1919)), when at Erzurum occupying the post
of Inspector-General,  Kemal Paşa was recalled to Constantinople by the
Sultan (I concluded at the request of the Allies), and, on his refusing to go,
he was deprived of his military rank, thus being left free to devote his
activities to politics, in which, although a lifelong enemy of Enver, he was
already deeply committed to the support of what had previously been
known as the Young Turk Party.  I frequently saw and had long talks with
him at this time, and was well aware of his political aspirations and also
of the difficulties he was meeting with in their prosecution, and of the
object of the Conference which he was then arranging to hold at Erzurum
in July." ((Erzurum Congress, 23 July – 7 August 1919))

Mustafa Kemal Paşa and Kâzım Karabekir Paşa, right,
in Erzurum in the summer of 1919.

Rawlinson had many more dealings in Erzurum with Kâzım Karabekir
Paşa, who would go on to play a major role in the War of Independence.
This was his description of Kâzım Karabekir Paşa in his book:

Kâzım Karabekir Paşa (Pages 180-181): "Shortly after our arrival the
new Army Commander, Kâzım Karabekir Paşa, appeared on the scene,
and as a formality to propitiate the Allies, the old IXth Army was reduced
to the status of an Army Corps only and numbered XV.  Needless to
remark, this made no practical difference at all to the military position.
Kâzım Paşa, a native of eastern Anatolia, is the most genuine example of
a first-class Turkish officer that it has ever been my good fortune to meet.
He has had much experience of war and was Chief of Staff to the German
Marshal von der Goltz, who the Commander-in-Chief of the Turkish
armies that defended Baghdad against the British advance.

Any army he has under his command may always be relied upon to be
thoroughly well commanded.  Not only has he the advantage of a naturally
quick and bright intelligence, but he is master of every branch of his
profession, and extremely conscientious in the exercise of his multifarious
duties.  I am anxious to add, first, that, having had much to do with him
in many extremely delicate positions, I have always found him as
straightforward as his orders would permit him to be; and, secondly, that
although it was my fate to be his prisoner for a long time and to suffer
great hardships at the hands of some of his subordinates, yet he himself
has never ceased to command my respect as an individual and my
appreciation as a thoroughly competent Commander.

For some time past he has commanded the Eastern Front of the Nationalist
armies and much of their success in the west must be attributed to his
enlightened handling of the complicated position in the east.  It is easy,
therefore, to realize how great must be his influence in the critical days
which lie before the new Empire of Nationalist Turkey, and particularly
upon the future relations of his country with Soviet Russia, on which his
well-proved loyalty and patriotism must continue to have the most
important bearing.”

                      Watercolor paining by Işıl Özışık.

As Rawlinson implied, he experienced very difficult times in Erzurum,
ultimately spending 20 months in prison as ransom for Rauf Orbay,
a Nationalist leader sent into exile from Istanbul to Malta by the British.
Here is a summary of that travail:

Imprisonment by Turks: On 16 March 1920, Rawlinson was informed
by Kâzım Paşa’s deputy that because Rauf Bey had been arrested in
Istanbul by the British and exiled to Malta, Rawlinson and his 4-man
team would be confined to their quarters in Erzurum.  This first
confinement lasted until March 24, 1921, at which time a Rauf Bey-
Rawlinson prisoner swap was in the works so Rawlinson was taken to
Trabzon to await developments.  However, in mid-April the swap deal
fell through and Rawlinson was returned to imprisonment in Erzurum
on 24 April 1921.  In early October 1921, Rawlinson and his men were
taken to Trabzon again, arriving there on 14 October.  On 31 October,
Rawlinson and his men went by means of a British warship to İnebolu,
where the prisoner swap for Rauf Bey was finally realized on 1 November
1921.  Rawlinson arrived in Istanbul on 5 November – see pages 287
through 353 of his book for details of Rawlinson’s and his men’s
imprisonment by the Turks.

"Beat & Release": Yet Another Retired Soldier in Adana Kills Wife, the Day After Her Birthday

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 October 2023)

another Adana retired soldier see yesterday's TNT edition for the
similarly bizarre story of "Commando Grandpa" in Adana.

The bitter "icing on the cake" came a day later.

Around mid-day the day before yesterday at the Öz Mehtap apartment
house in Adana's Seyhan district, retired sergeant Yaşar Ergül (53) got
into an argument with his wife Seda (35).   As the argument grew more
intense, Ergül shot Seda hanım in the chest in front of their 3 children,
killing her (!).

Ergül fled but was caught by police.  It turned out that Seda hanım, the
mother of 4 children, one from a previous marriage, had celebrated her
birthday the day before she was murdered.  On the occasion, Ergül
has presented Seda hanım with a cake, on which it was written
"Sometimes I wonder how much more I can love you." (!!)

In his statement to police, Ergül lamented that "I just wanted to scare
her. At the moment she tried to take the gun from my hand it went off.
I'm regretful." (!!!)

Regrets...he's had a few.

"Beat & Release": Retired but Not the Retiring Type: "Commando Grandpa" Kills Wife with Ax, in Adana

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 October 2023)

                      Upside-down retirement.

In Adana's Yüreğir district yesterday, an argument erupted between
retired Turkish teacher İbrahim Cebeci (70) and his wife Ayşe (65).
Cebeci, who has made a name for himself as "Commando Grandpa"
on social media by donning his old army commando uniform and
hanging upside down from a tree branch (!),  splattered his wife's
head with repeated blows from an ax, killing her.

Cebeci then left home, went to the local authorities, and told them he'd
killed his wife.  Responders found Ayşe hanım dead in the house and
Cebeci was taken into custody.  His neighbor Filiz Öz noted that "He
smashed his wife's head with an ax and killed her.  Everyone's in
shock.  Ten days ago he set their house on fire!"

On 7 May 2020, Cebeci fired a revolver from his home's window and
resisted the police who came in response.  Finally, Cebeci was captured
by a SWAT team that entered the house secretly.

What's a retiree to do if he doesn't play golf??!!

"Beat & Release": Hackers Brutally Kill One of Their Own in Crypto Money Wallet Dispute, in Tuzla, Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 22 October 2023)

                                From crypto to crypt.

In Tuzla, Istanbul, at about 5 o'clock on the evening of 23 September,
citizens alerted police to the legs of a body sticking out from the ground.
Arriving at the scene, police saw that a portion of the body had been
clawed at by street animals.  The buried naked body had, of course, no
ID card, but examinations in the police forensic lab revealed that the
deceased had been beaten and his neck broken. (ouch!)

Police determined that the body was that of Muhammed Boduroğlu
(41), who had a police record and that he last went to his home in
Kocaeli.  Boduroğlu was known as a "hacker" and in Kocaeli he met
with some individuals in regard to a crypto money wallet matter, at
which time he was beaten to death.

An examination of Boduroğlu's cellphone helped police identify
five suspects and they were all taken into custody in raids conducted
in Istanbul, Kocaeli and Elazığ.  One of the suspects died of a heart
attack on 6 October.

Suspects who remained alive (!) Vedat T. (40), Gürbüz A. (47), Serkan Ü.
(24) and Emrullah C. (49) were cross-examined by police and all of
them admitted that they knew Boduroğlu but that they themselves did
not kill him,  accusing each other of the murder.  All of the suspects are
"hackers", too.  The matter with Boduroğlu involved sharing crypto
money.

in his car with Demet Aydın (21), a former employee who he was flirting
with. When they reached Meram district, Demirci's fiancé Sara Demir
(24) and her friend Tuğba Demirci (22) got into the car, too.  The two
women proceeded to tie Demet hanım's hands with clothesline rope, after
which she was taken to an apartment house and tortured for two hours.

After Demet hanım was let go, she went to the police to file a complaint.
The suspects were taken into custody but released.  The same day, the
two women tortured Merve Kaya, another of Demirci's ex-girlfriends (!).
They were taken into custody again but jailed this time.

Merve hanım rescinded her complaint but the public prosecutor pursued
the case.  The three suspects (Demirci, Sara hanım and Tuğba hanım)
were each sentenced on 6 April to 9 years, 10 months and 15 days in
prison.  With regard to the torture of Demet hanım, the three suspects

"Beat & Release": Dad's Suicide-That-Wasn't, Discoverd by Chance, Daughter and Boyfriend Indicted for Murder, in Muğla

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 19 October 2023)

Murder for the sake of an olive orchard.

In connection with a fraud case being handled by the Yatağan public
prosecutor in Muğla province, the Gendarmerie conducted a search in
the home of Mehmet Karadağ (30).  On one of the documents found the
name of Ayşegül Bulut (20) appeared, prompting further investigation
and resulting in Ayşegül hanım being taken into custody on 16 March.

Ayşegül hanım's father Samet Bulut (49) "committed suicide" on 25
February 2022 and on that same day Ayşegül hanım attempted suicide
by drinking poison.  The Gendarmerie cross-examined Ayşegül hanım
and her boyfriend Mehmet Karadağ and they both confessed that they had
killed Samet Bulut and then made his death look like a suicide.  In the
course of the investigation, Ayşegül hanım's mother Penbe Bulut (49)
was taken into custody, as well.  Aylegül hanım was jailed and her
mother was released on judicial supervision.  Karadağ is already in jail
for fraud but was charged with Samet Bulut's murder, too.

In the prosecutor's indictment, it is stated that Ayşegül hanım gave her
father's olive orchards to Karadağ.  So, when Samet Bulut learned this
he filed a fraud complaint with the police, prompting Ayşegül hanım
and Penbe hanım to plan to kill Samet bey.  At the time when Ayşegül
hanım went to work,  Karadağ waited across the street in a vacant
house, wearing latex gloves and a black outfit, while Penbe hanım
remained at home on the pretext of washing the dishes.  Ayşegül
hanım brought rope, an insulin needle and a plastic chair, all wrapped
in a cloth, to the murder site.

Karadağ used a chemical substance to make Samet bey feint and then
injected insulin into Samet bey causing hypoglycemia.  Next, Karadağ
put the rope around Samet bey's neck and together with Ayşegül hanım
and Penbe hanım, they ran the rope through an iron bar to raise Samet
bey's feet off the floor and tied a knot in the rope.  Karadağ then put
the knife he used to cut the rope in Samet Bey's hand to make the whole
thing look like suicide. (!)

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 18 October 2023)

                           The future WAS now :(

In Kadıköy, Istanbul, toward morning on Sunday, Davut Atakov (23)
and his girlfriend Simge Tuğcu were coming out from a concert they'd
attended when they encountered Ali Kumsal Şallı, who made a rude
remark directed at Simge hanım.  An argument and then a fight ensued,
resulting in Şallı stabbing Atakov to death. Şallı was later arrested by
police.

Simge hanım had come from Germany to surprise Atakov.  She
lamented that "I was helpless, I couldn't do anything. I'd come here to
surprise him but now I will bury him. I am in great distress. We'd been
together for six years and were thinking seriously about our future."

                  "I need to hurt somebody."

Meanwhile, in Izmir's Urla district on Sunday evening, Sercan Bavkır, a
realtor who also owns a construction company and is a kickboxer (!),
bumped shoulders with building contractor Semih Kenan Köse in a
store while shopping.  Words were exchanged and a fistfight ensued,
with Bavkır's two brothers joining in.  Köse broke some bottles and
went after Bavkır with the glass pieces, prompting Bavkır to stab both
Köse and his girlfriend Sibel Kabadayı.  Köse died at the hospital and
Sibel hanım was released after treatment.

Bakvır and brothers Serkan Bavkır and Taylan Bavkır surrendered to
police and all three were jailed.  Sibel hanım, a pilates instructor,
stated that "no one could stop them.  They grabbed my hair and dragged
me on the floor. I took off my coat to try to use it as a buffer.  The same
person stabbed me in the chest.  We'd been going together for 6 months
and things were going well for us.  We were planning for the future.

"Fleece and Release": Veteran Hoodwinker Sells Dupe "Gold Ingots" in Street Encounter, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 17 October 2023)

The Beylikdüzü streets are paved with gold (hoodwinkers).

On 7 October in the Adnan Kahveci neighborhood of Beylikdüzü,
Istanbul, A.K. was walking along when he was approached by a person
claiming to be a foreigner with gold ingots to sell cheap (!).  As A.K.
hesitated, another person arrived at the scene (quite a coincidence!) and
took up the seller on his offer, declaring "Wow! So cheap!" and bought
one of the ingots.

A.K. then lost his hesitation and bought one of the ingots too for 18,200
TL (about $650).  Happy with his supposed bargain gold purchase, A.K.
went to a jeweler for confirmation but was disappointed to find out that
the ingot was not gold at all.

A.K. sought help from the police, who checked video from the scene
and identified the hoodwinker as M.P., who was then taken into custody
at his home in Güngören.  It turned out that M.P. has a police record of
70 crimes, 49 of them for hoodwinking using the same technique in
Arnavutköy, Başakşehir, Güngören and Kadıköy to "earn" 49,000 TL
and $1,500 from his "gold ingot" sales.

M.P. was processed at the courthouse for "nitelikli dolandırıcılık"
(defrauding someone by earning their trust) and released (!).
