türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 30 April 2022)

Only their hairdresser knew for sure...or so they thought.

Teams from the Immigration Directorate got a tip that illegal aliens
were being held in a "şok evi" (shock house) in Tuzla, Istanbul, that
the migrants entered through a secret passageway in a hairdresser's
shop. (!)

A raid was conducted last Monday on this "şok evi", the last gathering
point for illegals on their way to Europe.  The raid team entered through
the secret passageway and found 4 Afghans living in unhealthy
conditions.  The Syrian hairdresser M.H.A. and the building's owner
A.G. were taken into custody.  A.G. was fined 18,018 TL (about
$1,200) and released.  Hairdresser M.H.A. and the four Afghans were
turned over to immigration officials for deportation.

"Wheel of Fortune, Bursa Edition": Too Broke to Buy a Vowel, So He Stole an "M"

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 April 2022)

Has a thing for Vanna White, too.

On 21 December 2021, municipal workers at the "Bursa Millet Bahçesi"
(Bursa National Garden) noticed that the "M" in "Millet" had been stolen
so they called the police, who then arrived at the scene on Stadyum
Avenue in the Gaziakdemir neighborhood of Bursa's Osmangazi district.

Police determined from video footage that the thief was Murat Yeşilcam,
who had a record for two other crimes.  Yeşilcam was arrested and
confessed to stealing the "M" and selling it for 35 TL (about 15 US cents).
A case was brought against Yeşilcam with a sentence of from 3 to 7 years
in jail requested.

The Bursa municipality evaluated that Yeşilcam was the culprit in the
theft of other letters (!), too, and demanded that he pay 40,000 TL
(about $2,700) in compensation.  Yeşilcam, though, denied that he had
stolen the other letters.  His lawyer, Burak Bilgin, conceded that his
client could be charged with the theft of the "M" but objected to fine
the municipality wanted him to pay.  The court agreed and Yeşilcam
was ordered to pay 470 TL for a new "M", the replacement price
determined by municipal workers.

Bilgin noted that his client had stolen the "M" solely to sell it for money
and that he had no political aims whatsoever.

"Beat & Release": Yet Another Woman Dies by "Assisted Suicide", in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 April 2022)

He just wanted to put her out of his misery.

In Fatih district of Istanbul, Yalçın Narman (33) and his wife Fatma (21)
married 4 years ago and had two children together.  Last Sunday at about
4 o'clock in the afternoon, Yalçın bey called the police to say that his wife
had "committed suicide".  Police arrived at the house and found Fatma
hanım's body lying at the door of the bedroom. She had gunshot wounds
in her hip and chest. (!)

Yalçın bey and his brother B.N. were at the house when the police arrived
and told police that they had come home to find Fatma hanım lying
wounded on the floor, with Yalçın bey's gun next to her.  In a panic,
Yalçın had put the gun in a drawer.  Since it was not possible that Fatma
hanım could have shot herself in the hip and chest, and the fact that Yalçın
hid the gun, police began to suspect foul play (!).  So, Yalçın bey and B.N.
were taken into custody.

Fatma hanım's body was brought to the police forensic lab and the gun,
two empty cartridges and two shell casings, along with a piece of her
shirt, were examined at the police lab.  There were no gunpowder residues
or burns on the shirt piece, indicating that the gunshots were fired from a
distance, rather than adjacent to the shirt.  Consequently, the case became
a murder investigation. (!)

Yalçın bey refused to answer questions at the police station nor those
posed by the public prosecutor.  Nevertheless, Yalçın bey was jailed on
suspicion of killing Fatma hanım and B.N. was released on judicial
supervision.

Enthusiastic investors joined in but soon their payments stopped and
no one answered their frantic phone calls.

It turned out that Alev hanım had bamboozled 800 people out of 80
million TL (about $5.4 million).  She and five other people with ties
to her firm were taken into custody.  Alev hanım was living a life of

"Hey Yunushan, let's have some accidental fun."

Turkish Airlines technician Hasan Şener was driving along Hadımköy
Yolu Avenue in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, with his wife and children
when he got into a yield-right-of-way dispute with Ercan Demir, who
cut off Şener and tried to make him stop his car.  When Şener drove on,
he happened to slightly bump into Demir's car.

Both parties alighted from their vehicles and Demir and his friend
Yunushan Erdoğan demanded 2,000 TL (about $130) from Şener,
who put the blame for the accident on the other two and wanted to
call the police to record the incident.

However (!), tensions rose and Demir and Erdoğan pummeled Şener

shouted at them for their shameless behavior.  Meanwhile, Şener was
taken to a hospital for treatment and Büyükçekmece police tracked
down Demir and Erdoğan, who were both jailed.

Two Pakistanis secretly took pictures of a woman on an Istanbul ferry

created great indignation on social media, prompting Turkish immigration
officials to investigate the TikTok account, whereupon the two culprits
identities and addresses were discovered.

Pakistani suspect Zafer Waseem was picked up at his house in the
Gaziosmanpaşa section of Istanbul and the other suspect, Umair Malik
was tracked down in Küçükçekmece.  Both were taken into custody and
it was determined that they had taken other pictures of women on the

                      Our company's motto is "What?"

Pakistani M.S.U. shared a video on social media asserting that his
company could get Turkish residency permits for foreigners whose
residency applications had already been rejected.  This claim created
quite a reaction on social media, prompting Turkish immigration
officials to look into the matter.

The investigation found that M.S.U.'s company has two addresses
in the Fatih section of Istanbul and in raids there police took M.S.U.
and employees E.U., H.U., R.C., along with  Pakistani K.S. into
custody.  A search at the addresses yielded quite a bit of digital material.
M.S.U. was fined 45,000 TL (about $3,000) for hiring uninsured
workers and tax violations.

M.S.U. and K.S. were also charged with "creating fake official
documents" and sent to the deportation center in Pendik for expulsion
from Turkey.  The others were questioned and released.

his vehicle.

Yesterday in Ataşehir, Istanbul, at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon,
Kwatar Hadir (26), a Moroccan with French citizenship, wanted to take
a taxi to the European side of Istanbul.  Taxi driver Ercan Yaman drove
Hadir for a few blocks and asked that Hadir pay the toll for the Avrasya
tunnel en route to the destination.  Hadir objected and asked Yaman to
stop and let her out of the taxi.

An argument ensued, with Hadir declaring that she would not pay
Yaman the 70 TL taxi fare and would call the police.  Enraged, Yaman
grabbed Hadir, slammed her head against the car door and then flung
her to the ground (see video!).   Passers-by raced to the woman's aid as
she tried to stop Yaman from leaving the scene by climbing on the front
hood of the taxi, only to fall off when Yaman sped away.

Hadir went to the Ataşehir police station to report the incident, which
was captured on video by a local resident.  Police took Yaman into
custody but he claimed that Hadir had attacked him so he filed a
complaint against her.  Yaman was released after giving a statement (!)
but since his taxi was lacking an up-to-date inspection sticker the
vehicle was banned from traffic and Yaman's license was suspended.

"Rock & Roll İmam" Appeals to European Human Rights Court for Reinstatement

türkçe links to orginal Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 19 April 2022)

                        Not mutually exclusive, he wails

Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer, known as the "Rock & Roll İmam", was fired
from his post in Antalya and has appealed to the European Court of
Human Rights (ECHR) for reinstatement.  While he was serving as an
imam (Moslem clergyman) at a mosque in Kaş district, Tüzel founded
the music group "FiRock" with Doğan Sakin, the guitarist of  the band
"Kramp Group".

"FiRock" blended rock music with mystical Sufi tunes and its first
concert drew attention in both the domestic and international press. The
group's first single "Mevla'ya Gel" came out in 2013 and subsequently,
concerts in Turkey and abroad, as well as an album, followed.

Tüzer was assigned to a mosque in Balıkesir but was fired by a decision
taken by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in August 2018.  His appeal
to a court in Antalya was denied, as were other appeals in Konya and to
the "Danıştay" national appeals court.  So Tüzel appealed to Turkey's
Constitutional Court (AYM), claiming that his legal and free speech rights
had been violated, but AYM refused to examine his case because the 30-
day period had expired.  As a last resort, Tüzer appealed to ECHR.

Tüzer explained that "during the time that I've been playing rock music
I've made contributions to the recognition of my country and my
religion.  I'm happy that I've had this success as an imam.  I believe that
the ECHR decision will be positive and I'm waiting anxiously to return
to my role as an imam, which I love and which will allow me to perform
great services."

"Beat & Release": Forgetful Drug Baron Bagged by Police, in Marmaris

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 16 April 2022)

                                 You snooze, you lose.

Municipal worker Ali Eren (36) found a bag on a bench while he was
tending the flowers in Koca Mehmet Park in the İçmeler section of
Marmaris in Muğla province.  Eren saw that inside the bag there were
dollars and Turkish liras so he informed his boss.

Police were called and counted $12,400 and 2,400 TL in the bag.
Security camera footage identified the bag's owner as "Miran Othaman",
who came to the police station to claim his bag, asking the police to
give Eren $400 as a reward for finding the bag.

However (!), police became suspicious of "Othaman" based on his
behavior and followed him.  An investigation revealed that "Othaman",
using that name for his fake ID card, was actually drug baron Rawa
Majid.  A raid on his villa in İçmeler yielded 2 unlicensed guns, a rifle
and 21 bullets.  Majid was arrested and jailed.

Hopefully, he got to keep the $400, too.

Eren was congratulated by Marmaris Mayor Mehmet Oktay for finding
and reporting the bag, as it led to the apprehension of a drug dealer.

As for Rawa Majid, in his statement to police he said that "I came to
Turkey for a vacation. I went first to Bodrum and then came here to
Marmaris where I rented the villa.  After walking for a bit I took a
rest on the bench and forgot my bag there.  It never crossed my mind
that I'd be arrested for claiming my lost bag.  In order to avoid
suspicion at the police station I identified myself as a ship-owner.
I had my fake ID professionally made so I still can't figure out how
they determined my real name." (!)

"Kebaponaut" Reaches Outer Space Before Crashing Back Into the Sea, in Adana-Hatay

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Cumhuriyet Newspaper, 12 April 2022)

Space Station crew called for take-out.

Adana 'kebap' restaurant owner Yaşar Aydın tried to send a 'boru kebap'
(pipe kebap) into outer space via a helium balloon that he prepared with
a 30-person group. After flying for 3 hours, the airborne kebap-balloon
contraption exploded in the stratosphere and plummeted into the sea off
Hatay.

Aydın holds a patent for boru kebap (!) and was prompted to send his
progeny into outer space in honor of  "12 April International Manned
Space Day".  Together with his 30-person group, Aydın designed a
heat-resistant styrofoam box, equipped with a camera for the journey,
which was then hooked to a helium gas weather balloon.  After onions
and garnish were added, the balloon took flight from Menekşe quarter
of Sarıçam district amid great applause.

Anxious pre-launch moments at the Cape Menekşe
Kebapodrome.

During its approximately 3-hour flight into the air to a height of 35-40
kilometers, the 'kepabonaut' was documented by the on-board camera
before the balloon exploded in the stratosphere and the would-be space
traveler fell into the sea 121 kilometers from the launch point, off the
coast of Hatay's Payas district.

Thanks to a GSM tracking device on board the kebap spacecraft,
Aydin and his colleagues went to the crash site, boarded a boat and
retrieved the 'kebaponaut' 8 miles off shore.  Upon their return to
Menekşe, Aydin and his team were met with fireworks and the
first 'kebaponaut into space' project was deemed a success.

TNT Ukraine War Edition: Russian Slaughter in Bucha Recalls Another in İzmail, 232 Years Ago

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürryet Newspaper, 11 April 2022)

Russian siege of İzmail in 1790.

The Russian massacre of civilians in Bucha, Ukraine, called to mind
another Russian massacre 232 years ago when about 20,000 people were
slaughtered in the city of İsmail, now İzmail, in southern Ukraine.  At
that time, İsmail was part of the Ottoman Empire.

Russian Foreign Intelligence Chief Sergey Narishkin spoke with pride
about the seizure of İsmail, explaining at an exhibition that a Russian
soldier-artist went to İsmail, painted the Ottoman fortifications and
terrain and passed his pictures on to Russian intelligence.

The city of İsmail was founded along the Danube River and the Black
Sea shore in the 1480s, when the Black Sea was a “Turkish lake”.
According to the Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi, the city’s name came
from Captain Ismail Bey, who seized the area in 1484.  Another legend
has it that the name came from “İsmail Baba”, an Islamic lodge shaikh.
The city prospered and became a target for Russian and Cossack
marauders, so strong fortifications were built to fend off the attackers.
Along with Moslem Turks, the city’s population was made up of
Russians, Greeks, Armenians and Bulgarians.

With the start of wars between the Russian and Ottomans, İsmail was
caught in the middle of the fighting.  The Russians occupied İsmail in
1770 but it was returned to the Ottomans with the Treaty of Küçük
Kaynarca four years later.  The fortifications were strengthened and
more Ottoman soldiers were sent there.  Nevertheless, Russian attacks
continued and in 1790 İsmail was surrounded by a Russian force under
General Kutuzov.  Cezayirli Hasan Paşa, famous for raising lions, was
forced to flee from İsmail. (General Kutuzov was the character in Lord
Byron’s book ‘Don Juan’ who joins the Russian Army and fights for the
conquest of İsmail.)

When the Russians entered the city they took no pity on civilians,
slaughtering some 20,000 of them.  Some of the city’s citizens jumped
into the Danube to escape but drowned instead.  The Russians lost many
of their own, as well.  A number of Christians were taken to Moscow as
prisoners.  The fall of the city was a surprise to Istanbul and with the
Treaty of Yaş in 1792, İsmail was returned to the Ottomans.  However,
another war in 1809 resulted in İsmail again being occupied by the
Russians and this was finalized by an agreement between Russia and
the Ottoman Empire in 1812.

                                      ...in happier times.

Intelligence Chief Narishkin gained notoriety recently when he was
criticized by President Putin on TV.  In 2019, Narishkin had spoken
about the siege of İsmail with great pride at a conference on intelligence
at the Russian Historical Society in Moscow, noting how the paintings
of a young lieutenant named Sergeyev had made the siege a success
because of the detail his pictures provided about the Ottoman
fortifications and the city’s terrain.  Narishkin stated that “the Ottomans
didn't suspect him at all. He drew the views of the city in great detail
that showed Ottoman defense weaknesses and the lay of the land. Then
he provided these paintings to Russian intelligence.”

"Turkish Tarzan": War Veteran and Film Subject, in Manisa

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 9 April 2022)

                               "Wherefore art thou Jane??!!"

"Manisa Tarzan", as Ahmet Bedevi was known all over Turkey, can be
considered the country's first environmentalist.  But not from afar, up
close and personal.  He was born near Baghdad in 1899 but sought
refuge in Gaziantep during the Turkish War of Independence because
of a blood feud in Iraq.

Bedevi fought in that war around Gaziantep and on the western front
near the Aegean Sea, winning an Independence Medal for his heroics.
After the war, he settled near Manisa and took on the job of restoring
the forests that had been burned and devastated during the fighting.
That's when he assumed the lifestyle that earned him the nickname
"Tarzan".

Bedevi built himself a shelter on the steep rocks of Spil Mountain
and lived there wearing just shorts for 40 years.  When he would
come down from the mountain and walk the streets of Manisa the
populace would refer to him as "Manisa Tarzan".

The Manisa municipality gave him a job as a "gardening assistant"
at a salary of 150 liras per month and he planted trees along city
streets.  Bedevi also climbed many other high mountains in
Anatolia and planted the Turkish flag at the top. He only ever
wore shorts, be in winter or summer, and never got sick.  But a
heart problem did him in in 1964.

A film was made of Bedevi exploits in 1994 entitled "Manisa Tarzan"
and starring Talat Bulut.  Unlike Bedevi, Bulut got sick frequently
during the filming because of his scant attire but always returned to
the set, completing the film.

"Beat & Release": COVID's Collateral Murders, in Elazığ

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Milliyet newspaper, 9 April 2022)

He may not have COVID but he's a very sick man.

Convicts released from prison conditionally or because of COVID-19
continue to make others pay the price of their freedom.  In just the past
two years, 12 women and 3 children have been murdered by men let
out of jail provisionally.

The latest incident occurred in Elazığ, where Fırat Alan was released
from prison because of the pandemic and on 4 April he killed his
mother-in-law Zarife Doğan and his sister-in-law Gülay Doğan.  The
ten-year-old son of another sister-in-law was also seriously wounded
by Alan, who has a long record of criminal activity.  In 2002 he was
jailed for a murder and released in 2014. Subsequently, in 2018, he
killed a pedestrian while driving drunk.

Doğan family members lamented to Milliyet that "this is not this man's
first murder.  He has continually threatened his ex-wife Cemile with
death even though they divorced 15 years ago (!).  He came to kill
Cemile again this time but she wasn't at home so he killed her mother
and sister, wounding a 10-year-old boy too."

"After killing them he went looking for Cemile.  If he was still in
jail these people would be alive.  He killed someone while driving
drunk.  He also stormed a hospital armed with a gun. He was released
because of the pandemic and came to kill them.  Is he the only one
responsible for these murders?! What about those who set him free?!"
