Fate's mindless tool.
In Istanbul, physiotherapist Hülya Erşah Gencer, 7-months
pregnant, lost her life in a bizarre road accident Sunday evening
at the entrance to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. Gencer (39),
worked at the Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital and had gone
with her husband and a friend for an outing at Belgrad Forest.
The couple and friend Yiğit Şahinbeyoğlu were returning home
to Pendik on Sunday evening when an accident occurred in the
opposite-direction traffic lane. A speeding driver had attempted
to pass another car but instead crashed into two vehicles. As
the three vehicles flipped over and hit the divider, a large piece
of concrete broke loose.
Why then, why there, why...
The stone flew across the divider and into and through the
windshield of Gencer's car, hitting the physiotherapist. Her
husband immediately took the seriously injured woman to a
private hospital in Kavacık but she could not be saved.
The victim of this incredible accident, Hülya Erşah Gencer, was
remembered yesterday at a ceremony held at Haydarpaşa Numune
Training and Research Hospital. Her husband, Mehmet Ümit
Gencer, who had trouble keeping his feet, said after losing his
wife and child: "if I could give my own life I would. God bless
all of you. Hold the ones you love tightly. I didn't want to cry
but I can't help myself."
Hülya Erşah Gencer will be buried today in Çanakkale's Biga
district.
May she and their child rest in peace.
