Beautiful downtown Göle.
The residents of Göle district in Ardahan province, one of
the coldest places in Turkey where temperatures can plummit
to -40 degrees centigrade at night, want the government to give them
"cold pay".
Göle, located 42 kilometers from Ardahan city and 2,030 meters
above sea level, has very long and hard winters. The district
has about 30,000 residents, 7,359 of whom live in the district center.
Most people make a living breeding animals. The -40 reading
occurred on 27 January this year.
One resident asserted that "our government should give us
compensation for living through the winter here. We have to pay
a lot extra for heating and clothing." Russia and the U.S. give residents
of sparsely populated cold regions tax breaks and other incentives.
(really?).
Göle is Ardahan's southernmost district (but they're all cold).

These happen in 5's.
Over the past two months in Bodrum district of Muğla province,
5 cars, at different times, have failed to negotiate a curve on the road
and have crashed into the same carpentry workshop. All the accidents
occurred at night.
"Believe me, there's no bullseye on the front door!"
The owner of the workshop, İsmet Kırca (43), is understandably
upset about the situation and wants measures taken to prevent such
crashes. He says he has suffered 100,000 TL (about 30,000 USD)
in damages to his workshop from the crashes He said that "we've
asked the highway department to do something. Does someone have
to die before they act?"
