Whew!
The American Coast Guard alerted an oil tanker manned by a Turkish
crew located in the waters near Puerto Rico on 24 June that a small
boat was stranded 200 miles north of the island in the open sea. With
a storm brewing in the area, time was of the essence to save the stranded
boat.
Based on this alert, the oil tanker's captain, Necati Doğan, and his crew
began a breathtaking rescue operation. Didier Bovard, a French
adventurer, set sail from the Canary Islands and had been at sea for 137
days (!). The Turkish crew brought Bovard on board in a six-hour
effort, after which the American Customs and Immigration Service
took him to safety.
Capt. Necati Doğan explained that "the Americans gave us precise
coordinates so we rushed to that spot and looked around for four hours
before we spotted a shining mirror. Once we came alongside the boat
we shot a rope 200 meters to it successfully but ultimately we brought
the boat and sailor aboard with a winch. He was exhausted so we gave
him water and chocolate to restore his blood sugar and took
his blood pressure, as well."
