The environmental impact evaluation for the 3rd Bridge - 3rd
Airport - Halkalı rail line project has been started by the State
Railways General Directorate. The line will pass through
Küçükçekmece, Başakşehir, Arnavutköy, Eyüp and Sarıyer
districts of European Istanbul.
The new project has been prepared to include track that will
be built across the new Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (3rd
Bosphorus bridge). The envisioned rail line will begin at
Sabiha Gökçen Airport on Istanbul's Asian side and cost
4.5 billion TL (about 1.7 billion USD). The 62.5 kilometer
line will have 19 tunnels (34 kilometers) and 16 viaducts (7.9
kilometers).
Completion time for the new 2-lane rail line is 18 months. It
will be integrated into the existing high-speed rail network and
conventional lines for both passengers and cargo. Three tunnels
and 2 viaducts will be built through areas of environmental and
wild life sensitivity. The Sazlıdere Dam will be crossed with
a viaduct.
Istanbul is 15th in the world for traffic congestion. Rail to
the rescue, one hopes.
