Honey shortage in the offing.
The mild winter that Turkey just experienced has generated an increase
in endangered bee-eater birds' (merops apiaster) population., which is
bad news for bees. In this regard, Prof. Dr. Harun Baytekin of ÇÖMÜ
(Çanakkale Eighteen March University)'s Agriculture Faculty stated
that bees need to be better protected, but balanced against the danger of
extinction of the bee-eater birds. (!)
The mild winter meant that bees worked harder and entered the Spring
in a weakened condition. Prof. Baytekin noted that "Spring is when
the bees increase in numbers but now there are many more bee-eater
birds around, causing severe damage to apiaries. Usually, young swarms
of bees emerge just at the time when the bee-eater birds are migrating.
But before they breed, the bee-eater birds must be well-nourished so
they raid bee hives at this time, with each bird eating about 80 bees
each day and seriously diminishing the bee population."
A bird in the hand...saves the bees.
