                                              "What?"

Playwright Hatice Güsün Kınal (86), who wrote the play 'Tolstoy and
Anna', has lately been dealing with Alzheimer's disease in her home
in the Teşvikiye neighborhood of Istanbul.  When there was no one
else to look after Kınal, her neighbor S.A. assumed the role in
exchange for money.

S.A. began using Kınal's 20,000 TL (about $2,500) income and
learned about the flats she owns in Teşvikiye, so he decided to sell
them (!).  But in order to do so, S.A. had to get a fake health report
certifying that Kınal is of sound mind.  He made a deal with M.D.,
a doctor (with those initials how could he be otherwise!) in Silivri,
Istanbul, to get the fake health report for 10,000 TL.

Fake health report in hand, S.A. sold one of Kınal's flats for
1,650,000 TL, with the help of his wife and son, and got ready
to sell another of Kınal's flats.  However (!), on a tip, state financial
crimes officials began looking into the situation and learned that
the fraud had been committed with the fake health report about Kınal.

As the result, ten people were taken into custody, including S.A.,
his wife and son, doctor M.D. and four officials at the population
bureau.  In his statement, S.A. denied any guilt and claimed that
"Hatice hanım gave us the flats as gifts in exchange for looking after
her."  Nevertheless, police obtained a genuine health report confirming
that Kınal has Alzheimer's disease and informed her nephew, as well.

Six of the ten people taken into custody were released, while S.A.
and three others were charged with "bribery", "intentional fraud"
and "falsifying official documents."  The investigation is continuing.
