Now qualifies for danger pay.

Nuri Gural, the head of Gural Construction, and his wife
Meral Gurel hired Uzbek citizen Dilnoza Ismatova (32) to
look after their 5 year-old daughter. When the Gural couple
came home on 3 August their daughter wasn't there so they
called nanny Ismatova and told her to come home at once.

Would that her laugh had been beaten with an iron pipe.

Upon arriving at the house with the little girl, Nuri Gural
beat Ismatova with an iron pipe.  The nanny was then taken
to the hospital where she was found to have two broken
arms and a cracked hip bone.  Upon Ismatova's complaint,
Nuri Gural was summoned to the police station to give a
statement. In his turn, he accused the nanny of "kidnapping
and abduction."

Explaining her actions, Ismatova stated that "I had to pay
a debt to my friend and I didn't want to leave the child
home alone so I took her with me. Without letting me
explain Mr. Nuri began to beat me. The police who came
to the house saved me."  As for wife Meral Gural, she said
that the claims (nanny's or Nuri bey's?) were baseless.

B-ball stage mom Irem hanim and PT-hungry Berk

The Turkish Boys Youth Basketball team has reached the
summit of the sport in Europe but after the quarter final
match against Latvia an interesting incident took place. A
mother cut off the Turkish team bus as it was about to
leave the arena in Konya.

The mom, Irem Ugurlu, the mother of Fenerbahce player
Berk Ugurlu,  stopped the bus and screamed to Berk "get
off that bus son!"  Irem Ugurlu confronted the team's
coaches, asserting that "my son is a Euroleague player! His
coach at Fenerbahce, Obradovic, gives him much more
playing time (PT) than you do!"

However, it turns out that Berk Ugurlu averages 24 minutes
PT per game. Nevertheless, after the mom's outburst, Berk
played 29 minutes in the semi-final game against Croatia
and 26 minutes in the final (which Turkey won handily)
against Serbia.

Zeus Tapınağı'nda Türk izleri
         Good Graffiti

The digging period at Aizanoi Antique City has begun
quickly. The ancient city has been given the title "Second
Ephesus" by art circles because of it cultural make-up
and the fact that it houses the best-preserved Temple
of Zeus in the world. The new digging season began in
June and during the first few days, as the walls of Zeus's
Temple were being cleaned, previously unseen figures
belonging to the Cavdar Tatars emerged.

The city was under the hegemony of Bergama, Bithniya
and the Romans before the appearance of the Cavdar
Tatars there in the 13th century A.D.  The pictures
scratched into the temple walls shed light on the Turkish
period of the region and include scenes of cavalrymen
carrying horsetail standards, hunters, lute players and
many others, reflecting the lifestyle of the Cavdar Tatars.

The first excavations at Aizanoi, which is in Cavdarhisar
district of Kutahya province, were begun by the German
Archeological Institute in 1926 and have been continued
systematically each year since 1970. The current dig is
being conducted by Prof. Dr. Elif Ozer of Pamukkale
University.

Ancient Aizanoi is in Kutahya province.

Hey, who's supposed to be the superior mammal??!!

Yuksel Unal, director of culture and tourism in Samsun has
announced that some fossils have been found in an unused
lignite quarry in Ladik district.  The fossils were discovered
in the quarry, which was operated by a private firm for many
years but which has been idle for the past 10 years.

Unal explained that the fossils in question were found four
years ago and turned over to the Natural History Museum of
the Mine Investigation and Search (MTA) organization.
According to Unal, "when the scientists first examined the
fossils they determined that they were those of Mediterranean
mammoths.  They understood this because among the fossils
was one showing a back upper right molar tooth, which is
characteristic of these animals. We were advised that
determining the age of the fossils would require further
analysis. So we kept in contact with MTA and the fossils
were examined for about a year."

The fossils were determined to be from a mammoth that
lived 2 million years ago.

Ladik district is in southernmost Samsun.

Baz istasyonunda uyuyakaldı
Can't a guy just have a drink in peace!

Ersin Cevik (40) climbed a bas station tower in Sehzadeler
district of Manisa province and drank alcohol, ultimately
passing out.  Police and firefighters arrived at the scene
after citizens had alerted them to a possible 'suicide'.  Cevik
did not want to come down but was eventually persuaded
to do so.

The incident occurred  the day before yesterday at 1700
near the Kume houses in the Ahmet Bedevi neighborhood.
Cevik, a master ironworker who has a job at a workshop,
climed up the new 50-meter high tower in order to drink
alcohol there. After some time citizens on the ground noticed
Cevik and assumed that he was suicidal so they called police.

Teams arriving at the scene found Cevik passed out at the
30-meter level of the tower. Cevik opened his eyes only with
difficulty but then resisted coming down for the next three
hours.  His relatives came to the scene and calmed Cevik down.

Firefighters could not get their ladder to the point where Cevik
was located so he was taken down on a stretcher by means of
a winch and moved to Manisa State Hospital. Cevik's brother
Ercan Cevik explained that his older brother, a batchelor, "has
no problems. I think he just preferred this place because it's so
hot out.""

Sehzadeler district is within Manisa Merkezi, the capital city.

Murderer A.A. and murderee Turgut T.

State worker Turgut T. (46), a resident of Maltape, Istanbul,
left home on 26 May saying that he was "going to Ankara for
training."  After not hearing from her husband, Turgut T.'s
wife contacted police who then checked Turgut T.'s cellphone
records and video images from MOBESE (street surveillance)
cameras.

Police were able to determine that Turgut T. had in fact gone
to Izmir by car and the following day from there on to Didim
district of Aydin province. Alongside Turgut T. was his
friend A.A. (47) with whom Turgut T. had a debt problem.

Police also learned that A.A. brought Turgut T.'s car to
Igdir (on the Armenian border in far eastern Turkey). The
car was found abandoned in Igdir. A.A. subsequently hid
himself in Eregli district of Konya province but was
ultimately taken into custody by a 8-person police team as
he departed Istanbul.

Murder suspect A.A. lives in Aydin and he had persuaded
Turgut T. to come to Aydin to discuss the debt Turgut T.
owed to A.A. Confessing to the crime, A.A. explained
that during an argument  he had smashed an axe into
Turgut T.'s skull, killing him. A.A. then dumped Turgut T.'s
body in a  wooded area of Didim, where police subsequently
found it.

After disposing of Turgut T.'s body, A.A., a native of Agri
(near Igdir in far eastern Turkey) had brought Turgut T.'s
car to Igdir in effort to steer police in the wrong direction.

Izmir and Aydin are in Turkey's far west, Igdir
and Agri in its far east and Konya right in the
middle, south of Ankara.

//ed note: interestingly (or not) today's heroes
have names that relate to Turkish Prime Minsters.
Tansu Ciller was Turkey's first and only woman PM
in the 1990's. And of course, the current PM Recep
Tayyip Erdogan reigns today. Our research so far
has not turned up any evidence of familial relations
between our blog heroes and the PM's. //

    Turkish locksmith Tansu K.

O Türk'ü yakaladılar
Hurriyet's perhaps overly dramatic story photo.

Undercover agents in the city of Orlando in the USA have
broken up a hacker gang after 4 years of surveillance. The
leader of the group was Chad Warner. The gang passed credit
card infomation it seized from computers to Turkish hacker
Alper Erdogan (35) who then passed the data on to other
swindlers around America.  The court sentenced Erdogan
to 9 years 4 months in prison and fined him $1.1 million.
