Antalya'da akıl almaz ölüm
Torches car for spite. Burned to death.

In Antalya province, Ramazan Kaya got mad at his car and
torched it, accidentally burning himself to death in the process.
Kaya (33) was touring around the Gebece neighborhood of
Manavgat district with three of his friends, one of whom was
Ugur Acar, Turkey's first face transplantee (!).

Ugur Acar, Turkey's first face transplantee.

Kaya's car broke down and he tried for a while to repair it.
Failing to start the car again, Kaya became angry and decided
to burn the car.  He poured gas from a can he kept in the trunk
over the car, not noticing that some of the gas splashed onto
his clothes.

When Kaya lit a cigarette he went up in flames and his friends
tried to put out the fire.  Kaya was transported to Akdeniz
University Hospital where he died.

Acar's face transplant  operation took place at Akdeniz
University Hospital.//

Oh Brother! Jailbird Used Sibling's Identity

(Sabah Newspaper, 7 October 2014)

İstanbul
'Ali' convicted, Bayram in jail - can court fix the snafu?

Bayram Sarisoy, who lives in Istanbul, escaped from prison
after having been convicted of narcotics sales.  Bayram was
subsequently involved in a mugging incident along with five
other people the year before last in Kucukcekmece, Istanbul.
In order to hide the fact that he was a prison escapee and to
forestall the loss of the 3 years 6 months he had already served
in prison, Bayram gave police the identity information of  his
brother Ali, who is closest in age to Bayram among 5 brothers.

Bayram was tried, using Ali's identity, for the crime of 'armed
robbery against more than one person'  and was sentenced to
55 years in prison, based on 11 years for each of the five
people he robbed. He went back to prison and did not appeal
the verdict so the sentence stood.

So that the fact that he had used Ali's identity would not
come out, Bayram did not want his family to visit him in
prison and he would not accept any family visitors.  Bayram's
plan, however, fell apart when Ali learned about it.  Ali,
a worker in a textile workshop, was required to be registered
legally and when he went to the courthouse to do so he was
in for a shock.

Ali now lives with the fear that he may have to go to prison
and so he immediately made an application to the Bakirkoy,
Istanbul, court that issued the sentence against his identity.
His lawyer, Mahmut Ceran, stated that "I called the prison,
gave Ali's identity card number and asked whether there was
an inmate by that name there. I was told that there was and
yet Ali was sitting across from me at the time. Because of
all this Ali's life is in turmoil, which is why he has appealed
to the court for relief. He has asked to be acquitted and the
trial redone."

(Sabah Newspaper, 6 October 2014)

'Sacrificial lamb' Heval, victim of flying goat.

In Diyarbakir, details about the 'accident' in which a 13 year-
old boy was killed when a goat jumped on him from a 6th
floor rooftop, have been clarified.  Nurettin A., who lives on
the top floor of the building, purchased a goat to sacrifice on
the first day of Kurban Bayrami (Feast of Sacrifice).  The
goat was locked in a cage on the roof and when Nurettin A.
opened the cage to butcher the goat it leapt off the roof.

At this time, Heval Yildirim, a 13 year-old boy who lives in
the same building, was playing below. The goat landed on
Yildirim, killing him.  Fikriye Yildirim., who lost the youngest
of her seven children in the incident, lamented that "instead of
the goat being sacrificed my son was. I won't let the matter
drop."

Nurettin A. left the building together with his family. Charges
against Nurettin A. for 'negligent homicide' could bring him
a 6-year jail sentence.

Killer died at the scene, as well.

Next time, skip the fuss, take the bus...

The day before yesterday, an AnadoluJet flight departed from
Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul en route to Kars.  The flight
turned into a nightmare. First of all, because of rain in Kars the
flight could not land there and went to Trabzon instead. After
waiting for an hour the flight took off again but when the
weather conditions at Kars did not improve the aircraft was
forced to divert to Samsun.

After many hours waiting on the apron at Samsun, a new
aircraft had to be brought in because the plane and its crew's
work period had expired.  Finally, the flight that was scheduled
to land at Kars at 14.50 touched down there at 23.05.

Intended destination Kars far right. Trabzon and Samsun on the
Black Sea coast.

(Sozcu Newspaper, 4 October 2014)

         Avcilar district, Istanbul

In Avcilar, Istanbul, Mehmet Can A.(47), his son Goksel A.
(19) and Aliye I.(43) shot and killed their hometown friend
Mehmet Kapal (44) and tried to frame someone else for the
murder.  First, the killers left Kapal's body in an empty field.
A few days later they went to visit their friend C.A. and
borrowed his car for a few hours.

During this time, the three suspects planted the murder weapon
in C.A.'s car trunk.  Shortly afterwards they called police to
inform on C.A. and he was taken into custody.  However, C.A.
was able to establish that he was in his home town on the day
of the murder and he produced witnesses, as well.

C.A. told police about Mehmet Can A. and his family's visit
and the fact that they borrowed his car for a short time. Police
then took Mehmet Can A., Goksel A., and Aliye I. into
custody and determined that Mehmet Kapal had been killed
in Mehmet Can A.'s home, with the body being dumped in the
field afterwards.  The suspects were booked at the police
station and taken to jail.

‘Papaz’ı buldu
I.S. is dealt a very expensive hand by Nuray N.

Life coach Nuray N. (54) and her son E.P. run a coffee shop in
the Bakirkoy district of Istanbul, where Nuray reads customers'
fortunes and breaks evil spells. For one of her customers, I.S.,
Nuray declared that I.S.'s fate was in jeopardy and that I.S.
had no peace of mind.  In order to eliminate this 'priest's spell'
Nuray told I.S. that the charge would be 1,000 TL ($500).

Subsequently, after collecting this money, Nuray said she had
to apply more magic and charms, ultimately charging I.S.
53,000 TL ($26,000) over time. I.S., feeling hoodwinked, made
a criminal complaint to the police, to whom she provided the
written charms as evidence.  Nuray and E.P. were charged
with 'fraud by exploitation of religious beliefs and emotions'
and faced 7 years in jail.

Nuray rejected the charges, stating that "I'm continuing my
life and paying my rent. I don't have any property or a car."
Her son E.P. also asked to be aquitted.  The court committee
hearing the case decided that there was no concrete evidence
of intentional fraud and aquitted Nuray and E.P.

Sudanese Bride For Real or Revenge?

turkce links to original Turkish article

(Sabah Newspaper,2 October 2014)

Gazete ilanlı ticari intikam
Genuine marital bliss or practical joke of the year?

The day before yesterday the Sudan-based firm Farah Publications
put the following announcement in a newspaper in Turkey:
"We congratulate Ankara bridegroom Yunus Akpinar. and his bride
Khartoum's Samia Mohame Hussain.on the occasion of their
wedding held on 6 June 2014 and offer our best wishes."

However, it turns out that the notice was not just an innocent
wedding congratulations message.  Businessman Akpinar
asserted that "I sell printing machines to Sudan and I had a
commercial dispute with this firm. In order to get revenge
they made up this thing about me getting married there. I have
a wife and kids. The firm's head is an 84 year-old with some
screws loose. His aim is to upset my familial peace and harmony."

As for Farah Publications officials, they claimed that Akpinar
was married to Samia in a religious ceremony and that he paid a
$5,000 bride price, adding that "the wedding ceremony appeared
in newspapers in Sudan. We attended, as well. The Turkish
Embassy was aware of it. We work with Samia and she's waiting
for the papers that Yunus will bring from Turkey regarding the
wedding."

Not too far for a commuter marriage.

Louis Vuitton Chic Betrays Robbers

(Hurriyet Newspaper, 1 October 2014)

"Is that Louis Vuitton you're wearing?!"

Two robbers entered the home of Leydi Agavni Opsar (72),
the owner of the Opsar Jewelry company, in Nisantasi, Istanbul,
last Thursday morning. The robbers put tape on the elderly
woman's mouth, tied her hands and took $600,000 worth of
jewels and antiques.

Filling two suitcases and a Louis Vuitton bag with the loot,
the thieves left the building. Opsar's relatives found her at
home and when the police came she told them that the robbers
did not speak Turkish.  Police checked the building's security
camera and noted the suspects leaving at 7 in the morning with
the bags.

Police surmised that the robbers left in a taxi and looking at
security camera footage from the neighborhood they spotted
a taxi with a (you guessed it) Louis Vuitton bag sticking out
from the half-opened trunk.

Detectives determined that the two suspects got out of the taxi
in the Kumkapi section of Istanbul where they were met by two
women.  Police subsequently raided a hotel the suspects were
staying at and took the two Georgian robbers and their girlfriends
into custody. Another two individuals were arrested at a truck
stop in Sapanca (about 200 kilometers east of Istanbul).

Most of the stolen jewels and antiques were recovered, among
them a $180,000 diamond necklace and a $50,000 cigarette
lighter. The two robbers were jailed and the others released.

(Sabah Newspaper, 1 October 2014)

Emerald Isle looking a bit faded. Lack of rain this year?

Famous golfer Rory McElroy's lastest victory in the Ryder Cup
has created an unusual panic in his home country of Northern
Ireland.  The flag of the European Union was flown in the town
where McElroy is from to celebrate the victory but some of the
local residents thought that the EU flag was the ISIS flag. The
police went on high alert but subsequently corrected the mistake
with an announcement.

The resemblance is uncanny...well, they're both flags anyway.
