                 "I (glub, glub) do!"

Volkan Türk of Istanbul went to Sakaryabaşı in Çifteler district
of Eskişehir province last year to do some diving.  There he
found the love of his life -  Derya Ateş, who was born there at
the source of the Sakarya River, working as a diving assistant
Their friendship quickly advanced.

The couple decided to join their lives where they met - underwater!
The wedding table, chairs and flowers were all lowered into the
water with weights. Then the groom put on his diving equipment
under the watchful eye of an expert and the wedding party, their
witnesses and Mayor Metin Özen all went down below the water
level,where the couple said "I do".



Çifteler district is in southern Eskişehir province.

Hey, it was supposed to have a happy ending...

In Avcılar, Istanbul, a young man's elaborate effort to propose to
his girlfriend ended in a fiasco.  Thinking that he would convince
his girlfriend, the youth prepared a show at the Avcılar Pool Square,
with the help of a bunch of his friends. There were posters with
words of love on them, music, confetti and flowers.

When the young lady emerged from her nearby office the plan
went into effect, with music playing, confetti in the air and the
friends chanting "say yes!, say yes!"  It was clear, however, that
the girl was not interested in the show and despite pleas for her
to stay she quickly left the scene.

All concerned, especially the prospective groom, were left non-
plussed and to top it all the young man got a scolding from the
square's cleaners for the confetti and flower mess he'd left for them
to clean up.

Maybe at his age he shouldn't take mom along everywhere.

In Sultangazi, Istanbul, Halil Büyükkurt, whose car was towed by
police with his mother still in it, wondered "if my mother had died
from stress or fright who would have taken responsibility?"

Last week, Büyükkurt, the sales director of a lighting firm, left
his mother Nursel Büyükkurt (65)  in the back seat of his car as
he quickly tried to take care of some errands on Sultangazi Avenue.
Halil returned 10 minutes later only to find his car and mother gone.
Then he got a frantic phone call from his mother: "Son! They're
towing the car! I'm screaming but they don't hear me! I don't
know where we're going!"

   
     Pay attention to the signs!

Immediately, Halil called the police and asked for help. Shortly
thereafter, Nursel hanım called again to say that the she and the
car had been taken to the impoundment lot. Nursel noted that the
police there were quite surprised to find her in the towed car.

When Halil arrived at the lot the police told him that because of
the car's tinted glass they didn't notice that Nursel hanım was
still in the vehicle.  Halil decided not to file a complaint but
lamented that "what if my mother had had a heart attack or
something awful like that had happened? They should have been
more careful."

As for Nursel hanım, she told reporters that "I thought it was
an earthquake. I was very scared, not knowing what was going
on.  Then I saw that I was being towed. I screamed and yelled
but they just went ahead and took the car."

                           Ouch!

In the Kuzeyyaka neighborhood of Kepez district in Antalya
province the day before yesterday at about 1600 hours, Muhammet
Yücel, who had taken a driving course at Şelale Sürücü Driving
School, took the written test for his license and then moved on
to the driving test.

During the test, though, Yücel made a number of mistakes and
failed the test.  Enraged by this outcome, Yücel headed straight
for the driving school, where he beat driving instructor Hamide
Darı with a stick.  School chief Nazmi Acan intervened but Yücel
bit him on the cheek (!).  Police arrived and took Yücel into
custody.

Divorce, Mother-in-Law Style

                     Three's a crowd.

According to the case file, a newly married couple in Osmaniye
began to live with the groom's family.  The bride, uncomfortable
with this arrangement, asked her husband to move to a separate
house.  When he refused, the bride, saying that "I can't live in the
same house with my mother-in-law!", filed for divorce.

The local court ruled that this was not grounds for divorce but,
undeterred, the bride appealed to a higher court, which ruled in
her favor.  The higher court found that the husband's refusal to
move to a separate house was a 'wrongful act' and elaborated as
follows:

"Despite the woman's request to live in a separate house, since
the husband did not make the necessary efforts in this regard and
forced his wife to live with his own family, this prompted her to
file for divorce.  In accordance with this court's adherence to the
Private Residence concept, the lower court's ruling does not stand."
