  Murat Parlar reacts: "What the f...!"

In Beyşehir district of Konya province, police went into action
after getting a tip about a forced entry into a home by two people.
Arriving at the scene, police captured O.D. (26) and the other
suspect, Ö.A., who was able to flee in his car, after a 40-kilometer
chase.

Police searched both the individuals and the car but found nothing.
Suspect Ö.A. was taken to Beyşehir State Hospital for a physical
exam and police noticed that he was walking with a bit of a hitch.
So x-rays were taken of Ö.A. and (lo and behold!) a packet with
2 gold rings, 4 gold earrings, a gold ID bracelet and two gold
necklaces was discovered in his anus (!).


Yes, one's gait could certainly be affected.

It turned out that the stolen gold had been taken from the home of
x-ray technician Murat Parlar, who was (understandably) bewildered
by this coincidence.


Beyşehir district is in westermost Konya province.

Untimely Passings: Equipment Malfunctions

 Zeliha hanım asks the pertinent question: why?

Citizens who found a lifeless body in the yard of an apartment
house in the Toros neighborhood of Çukurova district, Adana,
called the police.  Subsequently, it was determined that the body was
that of American Thaddeus Mithcheel Borowicz (61) of the 10th
Tanker Base Command at Incirlik Air Base.

When the situation was investigated it was found that the death
of Borowicz, both of whose legs were broken off, was an incredible
tragedy.  The U.S. firefighter, the father of two children, had forgotten
his wallet and keys as he left for work in the morning. Locked out, he
went to the roof of the building, tied a cable to a chimney and began
to lower himself even with his 10 floor flat.

The cable snapped, though, sending Borowicz plunging to the ground.
As he fell, his legs hit the iron gate of the yard and broke off.
Borowicz's wife Zeliha, who had been at their summer house in
Karataş district, arrived at the scene and became hysterical. Borowicz's
body will be transported to Traverse City, Michigan, for burial.

                Seaworthy? Maybe not.

In Uzunköprü district of Edirne province, Mehmet Özen (40) took
his friend's son Soykan Duyar (10) fishing at Beykonak Village Dam.
The two fashioned a raft out of a discarded refrigerator and a couple
of barrels and set out onto the dam lake.

However, soon afterwards the 'refrigerator raft' began to sink.
Gendarmerie and AFAD (search & rescue) teams soon arrived at the
scene and found the lifeless bodies of both Özen and Duyarı in the
water.  The bodies were then sent to the morgue in Istanbul for
autopsies.

Education & Mass Transit: Overcoming Obstacles

      Dedicated 'Teacher of the Year' candıdate.

In Bolu, the administration at İzzet Baysal Anadolu High School
locked the iron gate between the school and the surrounding
personnel dormatories to prevent the students from smoking during
breaks.  But since the gate is locked from morning till evening the
teachers who live in the two dormatories, which have 16 apartments,
must use a roundabout route via a 1 kilometer-long path to get to the
school.

Some teachers,though, have taken to scaling the 2 meter-high gate to
shorten their commute. One teacher, who declined to give his name,
explained that "every time we want to have the gate opened we have
to find the fellow with the key but most of the time he's not around.
So in order to get to class on time we have no choice but to hop
the fence."

          V-HOV (Very High Occupancy Vehicle)

The dangerous travel of a 7-person family in a motorcycle
vehicle on the E-5 highway in Avcılar, Istanbul, put viewers
hearts in their mouths.  Two of the four children in the group
were crying and two were sleeping. Some drivers warned the
family about the danger, while others photographed the
spectacle.

Taxi Driver Creates Tourists' Nightmare

                            "What?"

The Istanbul vacation of French citizen Espinossa Stephani
and her Panamanian husband Christof Stephani ended badly.
The incident in question occurred on Eu Suud Avenue in the
Alemdar neighborhood of Fatih district in Istanbul.

According to the account of the Stephani's, they had been out
for the evening and wanted to return to their hotel in the
Sirkeci quarter at about 0130 hours that night. They got into
a taxi but the driver began to head in the wrong direction. The
couple protested and asked to be dropped off but the driver
continued on his way.


Yet another successful effort to dissuade tourists from Istanbul.

As the couple's cries grew louder, the driver pulled over to the
right and stopped.  But as Christop Stephani got out the driver
stepped on the gas taking Espinossa Stephani with him. Christop
immediately reported to the police that his wife had been kidnapped.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver took Espinossa to a warehouse, stole
her cellphone and 300 Euros and had a friend keep an eye on her.
After four hours in the warehouse, Espinossa finally had a chance
to escape and found a phone to call her husband.

Police checked surveillance video and caught the taxi driver 15
hours later.  In his statement at the police station the driver
explained that "she was fighting with her husband. They each
got off at different places. I didn't kidnap anyone."  The driver
was released (!) under judicial conditions.
