Imam's Eternal Retirement Plan

(Yeni Safak and Sabah Newspapers, 21 June 2014)

Imam has two feet in the grave already.

Mesut Dagdagan (43), the father of four children, has been
the imam at the Saadet Mosque in Tatvan district of Bitlis
province for 16 years. Four years ago Dagdagan  began
a drive to replace his previous 400-person capacity mosque
with  a bigger one. The imam established an association for
the project and enlisted the aid of philanthropists and local
residents, ultimately collecting 4.5 million TL.

The new mosque has been opened and Dagdagan has prepared
a grave for himself right next to it. The imam purchased a 10
square meter plot with his own money for his grave and he
explained why: "our ancestors put graveyards next to mosques
because they wanted to see these graves when going to the
mosque so that their hearts would be softened. I built a grave
for myself here during these days when we are wrestling with
worldly matters  and forgetting the afterlife. The important
thing is not to build the grave but to be ready for the grave.
The grave reminds us of death and those who see it are
reminded, too. They therefore think about judgement day
and mend their ways."

'Baglama' tribute with hats to 'The Gloved One'

Members of the Eregli (Zonguldak province) Municipal
Republic Neighborhood 'Baglama' (three-string instrument)
Group, inspired by the unique songs of Michael Jackson,
who died in the U.S. on 25 June 2009, have gone to great
lengths to play the songs of the artist with their 'baglamas'.

On the fifth anniversary of the artist's death the musicians
have produced a video clip of their version of the  song
"They Don't Care About Us".  Wearing the hat that Jackson
wore, the musicians interpreted the artist's song in a one
minute 10 second clip (more like three minutes), using
Turkish melodies.

The group's leader, Mehmet Ali Uzmez, explained that
they performed Jackson's songs in the Eregli municipality's
picnic area in the Kestaneci neighborhood and he also
talked about the clip they made: "it was rather difficult to
play Jackson's song with a predominantly 'baglama'-based
orchestra but our friends exhibited great dedication and
excitement in taking this on."

Uzmez added that they have uploaded the clip to social
media sites, with the aim of reaching Jackson's fans.

Eregli is a few hundred miles east of Istanbul on
the Black Sea coast.

Harem Resupply Finally Reaching Istanbul

(Hurriyet Newspaper, 26 June 2014)

//ed. note: another in our occasional looks at Turkish history.//

Items that were ordered to replenish the Sultan's harem during
the reign of Murad the Third, but which were lost when the
ship carrying them sank, will ultimately reach their intended
address.

Gnalic Island is near Biograd na Moru on the coast of
today's Croatia.

The 16th century treasure from the ship that sank near
Gnalic Island on the Croatian coast, will be brought to
Istanbul for display next year.

As the result of a fire that broke out in Topkapi Palace
in Murad's time, an order was submitted for items to
replenish the harem section of the palace. However, the
ship which departed with goods and jewels in the winter
of 1583 was lost to the sea along the northern Dalmatian
coast.

Oguz Aydemir, the head of the Turkey Underwater
Archaeology Foundation, said this about the items that
were salvaged from the wreck and which will be
displayed in Istanbul: "among the items that were
recovered, mostly from a steel box, were 43 meters of
silk material, glass works made on Murano Island and
candelabrum.  We understand that jewels on the ship
ordered for Safiye Sultan and Nurbanu Sultan (ladies
of the harem) were recovered from the wreck by the
insurance company after the sinking. We don't know
whether or not these jewels were brought to Istanbul"

"In our opinion, these items ordered for the palace during
this period, when the Ottoman Empire's was at its zenith and
most expansive, are extremely valuable from the standpoint
of understanding the palace's magnificence in those times."

Concurrent with the exhibition of the items from the
Gnalic wreck, there will be a display of 16th century
Iznik ceramics recovered from the Saint Paul which sank
near Croatia's Milet Island. Foundation head Aydemir said
that "the Iznik ceramics found in this wreck have never
been displayed before. The project has the attention of
Omer Koc, who has a major Iznik ceramic collection.
After Istanbul, they will be displayed in Zagreb and finally
in Dubrovnik."

Japanese and Swiss Plant, Snake Thieves Nabbed

//original Turkish article from Haber Turk Newspaper,
23 June 2014//

The Forestry and Water Affairs Ministry has not
allowed any 'salep (the dried tubors of certain orchids)
thievery', in its effort to stem biological smuggling.
Ministry officials evaluated a tip that came from Sivrice
district in Elazig province and then caught six people
gathering salep in rural areas red-handed.

The thieves were captured with their criminal tools and
30 kilograms of salep. Each thief was charged with
'destroying biological varieties', as spelled out in the
Environmental Law, and fined 35,193 TL (about $17K).
Ministry workers replanted the salep orchids.

Previously, 5 professors from Japan's Fukui Prefectural
University were caught in Gaziantep while stealing 182
roots of wild Anatolian wheat. The Ministry fined each of
the 5 Japanese researchers and two people who helped them
31,413 TL (about 15K) because they didn't have permission
to conduct research on Anatolian wheat.

In yet another smuggling incident, two Swiss citizens who
did not have permission to conduct research were caught
gathering 'Hopa vipers' in Artvin.

The one-time perfect couple heading off to jail...

Ramazan Guzel embezzeled 833,000 TL ($415,000) while he
was the chief of the Bolu Shopkeepers and Artisans Guild and
funneled some of that money into his girlfriend's account.

Yesterday Guzel faced a judge in Bolu Serious Crimes Court.
In his own defense, Guzel pointed out that his guild had not
fullfilled its duty to supervise him, noting that "if the ruling
council or supervisory council of the guild where I worked
had supervised me properly this matter would have come out
long ago."

The court's committee slapped Guzel with a sentence of 19
years, 5 months and ten days for major embezzelment and
falsifying documents. His girlfriend Pinar Saracli was
convicted of using money that was obtained in the commission
of a crime and sentenced to 1 year, 1 month and 10 days in
jail, with a fine of 4,000 TL.

Of the 600,000 TL that was embezzeled into Saracli's account
only 100,000 TL remained and this was returned to the guild.

(Hurriyet Newspaper, 13 June 2014)

       They're having a Cecen-style intervention.

A romance began in Bursa between Laura Kehursayev
(24), the daughter of Cecen commander Sultan  Kehursayev,
who lives in Istanbul, and Vetan Mavludov (33), an Ahiska
Turk. However, when Laura's older sister Latmira
Kehursayev, who also lives in Istanbul, learned of Laura's
affair with the married Mavludov she insisted that the
relationship come to an end.

After an argument about the matter, an enraged Latmira
went with eight relatives to Panayir hamlet in Osmangazi
district, Bursa. There they were confronted by Mavludov
and two Turks, Murat D. (35) and Mahmut E. (36). In the
ensuing clash Mavludov died from four stab wounds and
Murat D. was wounded.

The suspects then fled, abandoning one of their vehicles
in Gemlik. Another car was stopped by police in Izmit and
three Georgian Cechens were taken into custody. Six more
