                            Hoop Dreams

Mehmet Şanlı's dream of flying to the USA and playing basketball in
the NBA has left him stuck at Atatürk Airport in Istanbul for months.
At night the young sportsman stretches out on the baggage conveyors to
sleep and fills his stomach with snacks given to him by airport workers.
Since Şanlı's story has hit the news, citizens have been flooding the airport
switchboard with offers of help.

 Airport authorities explained that Şanlı's father has disowned him so they
are trying to find other relatives.  Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın
Bak stated that the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) has approached
Şanlı but the young man has shown no inclination to accept treatment.
TBF chief Hidayet Türkoğlu noted that "we have been working with the
ministry on this situation, which no one wants to see.  Six months ago (!)
when we again found the young fellow at the airport we did what we
could to get treatment for him and ensure his livelihood.  But when he
didn't conform to the treatment regime or take his medicine in a timely
manner the illness reoccurred."

Şanlı's older brother Sertunç Özgüneş, whose mother is also Şanlı's,
stated that Şanlı's father was very violent in the home: "I remember
hiding in the closet out of fear.  When Mehmet was 3 my step-father
grabbed him and threatened to throw him off the balcony. He's nuts.
16 years ago he broke my mother's nose.  The illness has passed from
father to son.  Mehmet should be put in a hospital right away."


Mehmet may be dreamng of Hollywood, rather than the NBA.
I smell a sequel...

Fake Son & Notary Claim Doctor's Fortune

                         The Notorious Four

In Istanbul, a 4-person gang, led by a notary, used fake documents
to get hold of the 25 million TL (about $6 million) inheritance left
by Dr. Hatice Güzin Göllü, who died 3 years ago.  The grifters
prepared an adoption document signed by a judge who served 30
years ago and forged a handwritten note from Dr. Göllü, whose
monthly income was 60,000 TL.  Presenting these documents to a
court the hoodwinkers were able to grab the money.  However,
afterwards the changed lifestyles of the gang members prompted
tips to the police.

Dr. Göllü died on 16 December 2015 at age 88. When she passed
away Dr. Göllü owned 22 flats in Kadıköy, one in Moda, a third of
the ownership of a Kadıköy building.  Also, she had 1,902.000 TL in
one bank account and $80,000 in another.   Dr. Göllü had no heirs but
shortly after her death one Ahmet Kemerci, a body shop worker,
claimed to be her adopted son and provided the court with notarized
documents to this effect.

Kemerci and his friends notary Ayhan Kine - the scheme's mastermind,
Murat Gündogdu and Tamer Olağan began living the high life, prompting
someone to suggest to the court that Kemerci was not really Dr. Göllü's
rightful heir.  Samples of Dr. Göllü's handwriting were compared to the
forged documents to prove them fakes.  Police moved in and took the
four suspects into custody. 




It's better that she never met her loving son.

Fish Out of Water Get Riot-Control Resupply

              Aquamarine rowdies saturated!

In Yaycı village near Iğdır, fish that were stranded in a canal when the
water supply was cut off last year have been fighting for their lives
ever since in a pond-like, oxygen-deprived situation. As the weather
has warmed the fishes' remaining water has receded and thousands of
them have been 'beached' on the canal's waterless concrete.

But firefighters and police have come to the fishes' rescue.  At first,
it was thought that the fish could be put into containers but since there
are so many of them this remedy proved to be unworkable.  Instead,
the municipality had fire engines and a TOMA (crowd control water-
spraying vehicle) pour 30 tons of water into the canal.  The TOMA
then shot pressured water into the canal to increase the oxygen and
this has served to reinvigorate the fish.

Lawyers Who Toot Their Own Horns...

Honk if you like lawyers!...and then, a deafening silence...

In Uşak, more than 100 lawyers who are members of the Uşak Bar
Association, which has 350 members and 40 interns, came to the courthouse
parking lot to protest the allocation of only 15 parking spots for
their members' vehicles.  Gürcan Sağcan, the head of the Bar Association,
and 31 other lawyers honked their car horns to accentuate their complaint.

However, in response the Uşak Public Prosecutor filed charges against the
honking lawyers, asking for 10-year jail sentences.  The Public Prosecutor
asserted that the protesters were obstructing the movement of prison
vehicles by conducting their protest in the parking lot.  Additionally,
the Public Prosecutor said that the rights of the prisoners in those
vehicles were being infringed by the protesters, too. (!)

The protesting lawyers, who are now being threatened with expulsion
from their profession, will be defended in court by Metin Feyzioğlu,
the head of the Turkish Bar Association, and his deputy Ünsal Toker,
as well as by Hakan Canduran, head of the Ankara Bar Association,
Aydın Özcan, head of the Izmir Bar Association,  and Veli Küçük,
head of the Adana Bar Association, among others.





 

Decoy Police Car's Genuine Lamps Stolen

I'm kinda glad it happened. These things always nearly
give me a heart attack while on the road.

In Samsun, a cardboard police car that police put on the road to
deter speeders became the target of thieves.  In order to enhance
the believability of the decoy, police added real red lamps.

But last night at the decoy's location, at Karayolu Derbent along
the Samsun-Ordu highway, thieves stole the lamps (!).  Later,
police took 6 individuals, 4 of them children, into custody.

Encyclopedia Ignoramica

What the enlightened Turkish rector is wearing these 
days.

An encyclopedia published under the direction of the rector of
Mardin Artuklu University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ağırakça, has created
controversy because of certain statements in the encyclopedia. 
The 6-volume Şamil İslam Encyclopedia has been brought to the
agenda of the Turkish Parliament by CHP (opposition party)
Parliamentarian Ali Şeker.

In the encyclopedia with regard to the word "mürted"  (apostate,
someone who has left Islam and taken up another religion), it is
defined as follows: "to believe that non-Moslem ideologies
that have been invented by infidels are correct; to worship
monuments, graves and the dead; to approve of ungodly orders
like Judaism, Christianity, Communism, capitalism and democracy."
The definition of "mürted" continues in this way: "a Moslem who
begins to think this way  has committed apostasy and the penalty,
if the person does not renounce it, is death."  (!)

Concerning "nüşûz", the encyclopedia explains to readers that it
is defined as "disobedience to one's husband; a woman who feels
ill will toward her husband and rebels."  This particular paragraph
declares that "a woman must conform to her husband's legitimate
orders while receiving a marriage settlement or alimony.  A husband
first warns a woman who disobeys his orders, then advises her and
tries to persuade her.  If all this fails, the husband locks the woman
in her room.  If the woman is still disobedient the husband may
resort to disciplinary penalties.  However, the husband should punish
the woman without leaving a mark on her body." (!)

Pizza Delivery Guy's Spit Leads to Blackmail Charge

      One topping that's not on the menu.

In Eskişehir, pizza delivery man B.S. spat on the pizza he was about
to deliver and took a picture of himself doing so (!).  The incident
occurred on 24 December and was also reflected on the apartment
house security camera.  When the intended recipient of the pizza,
H.A., complained, legal measures were started against B.S.

A suit was also filed in the Eskişehir Consumer Court by H.A. against
the pizza company.  In its defense, though, the company declared that
the complaint was 'blackmail' and that "when B.S. spat on the pizza,
apartment security guard Ç.E. saw it happen at the same instant but
alerted H.A. by written message, rather than a voice telephone call, so
that H.A. would have written evidence for his complaint.  H.A. first
demanded 1 million TL, then 500,000 TL and his latest demand is for
283,550 TL.  He is trying to make some easy money by threatening
to publish the picture if we don't pay him."
