Hışto'nun küresi... İddia: Büyülüdür, nazardan, kötülükten korur

A conversation-starter. Just put it on your coffee table.

Ankara police got a tip that someone was trying to sell historic
items secreted away at a residence.  In a subsequent raid on the home
of A.K. police found 28 ancient coins and a brass sphere covered with
human and animal figures, writings in Arabic, Persian and a still-
unidentified language, and astrological references.  The sphere
was confiscated and sent to the Ethnographic Museum in Ankara.
An identical sphere is on display at the British Museum in London.

A 3-person committee of museum researchers prepared a report
about the sphere: "the Arabic writing on the sphere says 'in the
vastness of the sea, aid for a ship will come and the air will be an
advantage.  Thanks to God, the flow of the water will pull the
ship but work will be the greatest advantage.'  There are some
Shamanism-related lines on the sphere, which is called 'brass
celestial' in the scientific literature.  We evaluate that the sphere
may have been used for astronomical research, maritime navigation
and astrologic predicitions."

As for A.K., who wanted to sell the sphere for $1 million, he said
that the sphere belonged to his ancestors in the Hışto family, given
to Hışto Seyit İmam Mehmed by individuals descended from the
Umayyad Dynasty.  According to A.K., the sphere is magical and
protects one from the evil eye and all sorts of other bad things.

Kıraç, right, said to be investing in the latest face-recognition
technology henceforth...

Turkish businessman İnan Kıraç (82) was hoodwinked out of 4.1
million Euros by French-Israeli swindler Gilbert Chikli, who wore
a silicon mask of former French Defense Minister Jean Yves Drian
in a video conference with Kıraç (!).

        Chikli's shrugged-shoulder defense: "What?"

Chikli created a model of Drian's office for the video conference
scheme and convinced Kıraç that "we must save a journalist
who is in the hands of a terror organization."  It is thought that
in total Chikli scammed 80 million Euros with this approach.
Kıraç sent the 4.1 million Euros to a bank account in China.

Chikli has been sentenced to 7 years in jail. His latest victim
was Sophie Grenier, the accountant for the Landes Region
Chamber of Commerce, who contacted police about Chikli
when she realized she was being bamboozled by him. Chikli
was arrested in Kiev and put in jail in France last year.

Rapist Police Get Kid-glove Treatment

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 23 February 2019)

Ekip otosunda tecavüze 10 yıl
He has his future to think about...not P.T.'s.

On 16 January 2018, a woman named P.T. (28) got out of a taxi in
Beylikdüzü, Istanbul, after coming from Taksim Square.  While
walking home, a police car with Serhat Ertuğrul (27) and R.Y. (27)
inside pulled up to P.T. and the officers offered to give her a ride
home.

At first, P.T. declined the ride but the police insisted so she got
in the police car.  After driving some distance, Ertuğrul hopped out
and got into the back seat with P.T.  and raped her.  Subsequently,
P.T. called 155 (911) and filed a complaint against the two
policemen.

In court in Bakırköy, Ertuğrul claimed that he did not have
intercourse with P.T., explaining that it was she who had held his
hand (!).  Ertuğrul added that "from my perspective, I didn't commit
this crime" and he requested acquittal.  As for R.Y., he told the
court that "there was no sexual intercourse, just kissing.  The day
of the incident was my second day partnering with Serhat Ertuğrul,
so as far as I was concerned, he was kind of like my boss.  I was
tounge-tied.  I couldn't do anything either way. I'm innocent."

Ultimately, the court ruled that Ertuğrul had, in fact, raped P.T.
and sentenced him to 12 years in jail.  However, the sentence was
reduced to 10 years for "good behavior" (!), taking into consideration
the effect the incident will have on Ertuğrul's future (!!).

R.Y. was acquitted of rape but sentenced to 5 months in jail for
failing to warn Ertuğrul that he was committing a crime. (!)

Fog Creates Dire Straits

Screen-shot of ships waiting in the Black Sea (top) and the
Sea of Marmara (bottom) to get through the Bosphorus this
week.

The fog that choked the Bosphorus for 3 days this week caused a
nightmare for shipping.  All ferry crossings were canceled and tanker
traffic through the strait was paralyzed, with hundreds of ships
having to wait in the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara.

Smaller craft experienced problems with fuel, provisions and
water because of the extended wait and shipping companies
lost thousands of dollars by not being able to deliver their goods
on schedule.

Last year, too, 5 days of fog in the Bosphorus stranded 351 ships
on either side of the strait as they waited for passage

Spendthrift's Demise Caused by Neck Vanity

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Sözcü Newspaper, 22 February 2019)

‘Kalp krizinden öldü’ denilen Türk iş adamı hakkında şok gerçek ortaya çıktı
                     Another Trump Tower big-spender.

Sait Koç, the owner of the Datatek company, supposedly died in his
New York hotel room of a heart attack in 2012.  Now the real facts
behind Koç's death have been brought to light in a New York court-
room.

Koç had an apartment in Trump Tower and an office in Rockefeller
Center.  It turns out, though, that Koç died while under general
anesthesia for an esthetic operation at a clinic, to remove fat from his
neck (!), on 18 July 2012.  Koç's relatives filed suit against his doctors
and at the conclusion of the 4-year trial, Judge Eileen Rakower
awarded Koç's family $3.3 million as compensation.

Koç's sibling Dinçer Koç (40), an academician at Istanbul University,
said in a statement to the New York court that because of Sait bey's
death the family lost at least $1 million in income each year.  Sait bey,
a bachelor, spent between $300,000 and $2 million per month (!),
lived the high life and loved to give Hublot and Rolex watches as
presents.  He also bought homes and summer places for everyone in
his family and paid the education expenses of his nieces and nephews.
According to Dinçer Koç, Sait bey left an office in Astoria Tower in
Istanbul, a villa and $3 million.

TNT Matchbox Diary: A Turkish POW in Russian Prison Camp (1915-1918)/Part XXVIII

//Ed. Note:  Fuad Bey settles into his lodging in Vetluga.
Some of his housemates are married officers and even
their families.  Time passes with poker, shopping and
gazing at the pretty Russian girls.//

26 May 1916 Friday
I got up a bit late. After morning tea and breakfast we walked around
the garden a bit. Since setting up a new table d’hote has been requested,
I got some supplies like a plate and a spoon. Late in the afternoon a
Russian corporal came from Moscow and he had us write our names
in Turkish on forms printed in Russian. These forms will supposedly
go to Istanbul to the Ministry of War. In the evening we filled our
stomachs with tea, bread and cheese. At night we gathered around the
table and Osman talked to us about some things. For example, war and
the German-Turkish alliance. If we, the Triple Alliance, defeat the
Allied Powers then Turkey will get Tblisi, Baku and the entire
Caucasus. Very good. May God grant us victory.

Osman is a retired artillery major and was most recently the Erzurum
Provincial Engineer. Because he suffers from typhus he had remained
in Erzurum and the Russians made him a prisoner. He is knowledgeable,
knows six languages and is polite. His education was in France.
Together with those who had come before, there are 26 people in this
house, which has four rooms. In the first one are five who came before.
In the dark room next to it are Halis, Ethem, Temel, Fahri, Hurşid,
Kâzim and Rıfkı. I’m in the big living room with Zühdü, Gendarmerie
Nuri, Erzurumlu Hasan, Mehmet Ağa Tahir and Mustafa. In the room
next door are Salah, Trabzonlu Hasan, Burhan, Major Osman, Captain
Hakkı, Secretary Şakir and Second Lieutenant Mustafa. These last four
are married and their families are with them. Other than the ones who
were already here and the married fellows, we’re all  junior officers
and other  than Erzurumlu Hasan and Mehmet Ağa, we’re all reserves.

27 May 1916 Saturday
In the afternoon I went to the market for the first time with two friends
and a Russian soldier as a guard. The avenues here are all straight and
squared off. There are big shops and stores too. Since there is a
shopping market set up in the city today (they have this market every
Saturday) it was crowded.  I got some clothes from a big store and some
other things, as well.  On the way back I stopped by the pharmacy and
got a bit of linen and carbonate. I saw a few pharmacies in this city. In
the evening we ate from the table d’hote we just set up. Then the weather
turned bad and it started snowing. At night the snow was a finger thick
on the ground. Unexpected. I went to bed late, a bit after midnight
toward morning. I spent today thinking about the past, my revered
parents and my brother.

Sometimes Sad and Troubled, Sometimes Comforted by the
Promise of the Future

28 May 1916 Sunday
Today is Sunday. Every place is closed. Everyone is streaming toward
a tree-filled, rather long garden that is across from us on the loading
pier road that runs south of our house. They’re strolling around. It’s
like a park but it’s plain, simple, other  than trees there’s nothing. It’s
real decorations are the young, beautiful girls. Most of my time is
spent gazing here and sometimes I listen to the zither the secretary
plays.

russian girls 1915 ile ilgili görsel sonucu

Today I couldn’t help getting lost thinking about some
nonsensical things. These are all thoughts about the calamity.
Sometimes I’m sad and troubled. Sometimes I’m comforted by the
promise of the future. In the evening Salah taught us how to play poker.
We played a bit for fun and Osman joined in.

29 May 1916 Monday
Before noon Şerif and Kör Mehmet came to our room. We sat a while
and then went over to their place. In Şerif, who had recognized my
father in a photograph at Pehon Kısna village, I found a nice, good-
hearted friend although I didn’t know him very well in the detachment.
Kör Mehmet seems to be a fellow townsman of mine. I came back
after chatting quite a bit but at their insistence I went again later in
the afternoon. They served tea and other things. Later they came to
us and we served them tea. Then it was evening and I began to play
poker with Salah, Ethem and Saffet. Anyway, the night, which really
can’t be distinguished from sunset and dawn, passes quickly. Then
we started to play thirty-one and Zühdü joined in this. The poor
fellow lost half a ruble in the game which lasted two hours. In any
event, we quit and went to bed. I have no time for  and get  nothing
out of the game.

30 May 1916 Wednesday
The weather turned bad again. It’s pretty cold outside and a fierce
wind is blowing snow all over. It has snowed quite a lot. At night we
played some poker again. I like this and we all had a rambling
conversation among ourselves. Boredom. When will we be freed
from cold places like this?

31 May 1916 Thursday
The prices are high in this city. Everything is three or four times costlier
than before. There’s sugar though. The price of white bread at 28
kopeks per  funt  (12 oz./409.5 grams) is 17 kopeks and a funt of old
black bread ıs eight kopeks. A bottle of milk, which gives 13 cupfuls,
is 30-35 kopeks. Ten eggs cost 35-40 kopeks. The Commander came to
see us today. He said he would be leaving and he introduced the new
Commander who was with him to us. Our days pass with nothing to do
and we’re bored.

The items will be sent to the NSA Cryptologic Museum in
Fort Meade, Md. USA for safekeeping.

Istanbul police identified an individual selling prohibited items
such as secret cameras and recording devices over the internet.
On 11 February, police raided an address in Sultangazi district
and seized 545 items of this ilk.

In suspect Y.T.'s internet pitch offering the items  he declared that
"becoming a real secret agent is in your hands."   The secret
cameras are disguised as cigarette lighters, pens, bracelets, flash
drives, car keys, buttons, eyeglasses, nail polish jars, watches,
air fresheners and ashtrays.  Other items were fitted with recording,
tracking and bug-detecting devices.   The street value of the items
was estimated at 400,000 TL (about $80,000).

Y.T. told police that he obtained the items from China via illegal
channels and that he sold them for between 80-850 TL.  Police
explained that since the items seized could be used to "infringe
on the sanctity of personal life" they are banned for sale and
cannot be used without a court order.
