Cuz it feels so empty without me.

he's a big Eminem fan  great minds think alike.

Prof. Dr. Vahap Engin Gülal is an academician in the Geodesy
Department of the Construction Faculty at Yıldız Technical University
(YTU) in Istanbul.  But Gülal had an opening in the Faculty's
Measuring Techinques for Map Engineering Department written such
that the successful candidate would know German. Gülal did his
doctorate at Hannover University in Germany and he filled the
opening written for a German speaker with himself (!).

The job announcement was published in March, along with the
requisite requirements plus one that demanded "the ability to give
classes in German."  To this day, there has never been a class at
YTU in German.  It was learned 3 months after the job announcement
that Gülar had written it.

YTU academician Müge Albayrak, who worked as a researcher at
Ohio State University in the USA, objected to Güler's slight-of-hand
and called him out on it.

7 March 1917 Wednesday
The weather is neither completely clear or cloudy. The sun sometimes
graces us with its warmth. The sky can’t been seen because of some
fog and clouds. The cold has suddenly gone away. We went for a walk
and looked at the big river barges being built on the riverbank. These
are really quite large.  A note was sent to Major Mehmet Bey in the
morning in regard to solving the bread problem. A decision was made
to combine bread with table d’hote and for me to supervise this so I
took the bread accounts.  Right away I made an estimate. I weighed
what we have (10 pud) and calculated the expenses. There was a
shortfall of 140 funts, which amounts to 21 rubles. The lowdown
fellows were resisting and insisting on the bread problems before.
The shameless jerks were saying ‘we’ll make the flour’. Who knows
what tricks they’ve been up to. In any event, time shows a person in
a truer light. The bread was cooked and we distributed it at a fee that
everyone could afford. We bought a teapot and a bottle of milk at the
market. We studied German a bit at night, chatted and went to bed.

8 March 1917 Thursday
The weather  feels like summertime. The sun is out in full and the
clouds have gone back to where they were at dawn. The little birds
are singing. One can’t feel the cold at all. If there wasn’t snow outside
a person would think it was summer. Two Tercüman newspapers came.
Supposedly the English will blockade the German coast this time.
Tercüman says there’s no chance of this happening.  The Russians
are celebrating the fall of Erzurum in Tblisi with a party. The Turks
have taken to Istanbul the cannons the Russians left at Plevne as a
reminder of their saving the Bulgarians from the Turkish yoke.
Today passed idley. I really don’t know why. For the past two
weeks I’ve had a terrible sense of bewilderment. Even though I’ve
wanted to study and keep busy I haven’t had the wherewithall, as if
I’m not understanding things properly. Sometimes I prefer to
daydream or lie down. I don’t  have a concrete thought. I really don’t
know what’s happened to me. If captivity goes on any longer we’ll
probably go crazy. According to rumors, all the servants in the
houses will be sent to Siberia. At night I explained some of my
old problems to Halis. A bit afterwards, rather late, I went
to bed. Tonight I had nightmares once or twice.

9 March 1917 Friday
The beautiful weather we had yesterday is with us again today.
News (Tercüman): the Allied Powers want all the governments in
the world to join them with the goal of attaining the main aims they
haven’t been able to secure themselves. The Russian newspapers
write that an okka (2.8 lbs.) of oil in Turkey (Izmir) is now 40 kuruş
and that’s why there’s hunger  (in Russia). Tercüman is supporting
this and writes that right now in most cities of Russia a funt is
selling for this amount and Turkey’s oil is quite a bit cheaper. When
I got up this morning I didn’t feel any pain in my body, my mind and
my brain were healthy and happy. But this didn’t last long. I started
to feel a haziness in my brain and the sign of an aching in my body.
After lunch I lay down to rest and slept until evening. When I got up I
felt much better. I came up with two reasons for the way I’ve been
feeling over the past few weeks but it may be neither of them. One is
the irritation that comes from thinking too much and the other
is too much consumption. I’m guessing that I’m under the influence
of the first one, in particular.  Right now I don’t feel very self-assured.
Ah, these are the bitter poisons that captivity gives…three more of the
servants were shipped out in the morning. Dursun and the German
soldier Fritz remained here. Four Austrian servants came in their place
toward evening.

10 March 1917 Saturday
The good weather is gone. The sky is completely overcast. There’s
quite a storm raging. And snow, too. News: (Tercüman) the English
have advanced in Mesopotamia, 100 miles from Bagdad. The prisoners
in Turkey are being very well cared for. A Russian newspaper has
published the account of a Russian who escaped from Turkey. The
railroad has been extended from Ankara to Yozgat and from Ereğli to
Kayseri.  Good paved highways go as far as Sivas. Strong
reinforcements are being built around Sivas – 20 lines of hunter
trenches and six lines of barbedwire obstacles, along with many
cannon positions. If the Russians attack in the Spring it will be
defended. I felt hazy again today, but not as bad as yesterday. Time
is passing with nothing to do. I’m not working on German…I don’t
know why. Wechatted and went to bed.

Arslan (which means 'lion'), right, roaring with procreative pride.

In Diyarbakır's Bismil district, Mehmet Arslan, known as 'Hamo Ağa',
received kisses on his hand from his 56 children and more than 300
grandchildren on the occasion of the Ramazan holiday.  Arslan, who
has 4 wives (!), is the chief of the Bismil Agriculture Chamber.

A long line formed in front of Arslan's house for the patriarch to
review.  After the holiday prayer, Arslan went from door to door
in the village to visit his neighbors.

TNT POW Reports: Turks in Greek Hands (1920-1923)/Part VII

//Ed. Note: This report is something of a comprehensive
one, filled with horrific details and mentions of traitors
who went over to the Greek side.//

Other than a few ill individuals whose identities are not known, no one
is left at the prison camps on Milos and Sakız, at Kalidar near Athens,
Lusid, Larrisa, Mustafa Paşa Fortress at Hanya (Crete), Dedeağaç and
Patra.  The return of the sick ones is expected soon, as well.  However,
based on a reliable intelligence source, it has been confirmed that
traitors from my barracks in Salonica named  Halil of Küre and Hacı
Veli, the former Karaviran principal, and that traitors formed a gang in
the service of the Greeks at Gümülcine, as well.

In addition, based on the statement of Ali Osmanoğlu Ahmed of
Söğüt’s Esri village, who was at the Losya camp, one of the prisoners
at the aformentioned camp from Trabzon and another named Saatçı
Ahmedüçüncüsü of Izmir began wearing hats, married Greek girls
and remained there.

dedeağaç gümülcine haritası ile ilgili görsel sonucu

At the Dedeağaç prison camp, there were about 1,000 prisoners.
Their clothing and food was quite bad and they were made to stay
in the rain without any roof over them.  Consequently, many of them
became ill and then died from the cold and ill treatment at the
hospital.  Tavşanlızade of Söğütlü, was sentenced to 101 years in
Eskişehir for his service to the National Independence Army.
Additionally, some individuals from Izmit and the surrounding area
were brought to the Zeytun Fortress in Hanya and sentenced to
prison terms of varying lengths for the same reason.

The 1,000 prisoners held at Mustafa Paşa Fortress in Hanya (Crete)
were beaten and degraded by the guards for no reason.  Based on the
statement of Mehmedoğlu Salim of Burecik village in Söğüt, it is
understood that the deputy regimental commander came to the
fortress every other day with his gun in his hand and threatened the
soldiers with death.  When a group of 50 prisoners came to
Dedeağaç, Armenians from Anatolia attacked them with rocks,
bombs and guns, killing two of them.  The rest of the prisoners were
rescued by the Greek officers.

Milos Island is at bottom left.

The abovementioned camps’ clothing and food provision were irregular.
Based on the statements of Mehmedoğlu İbrahim of Söğüt’s İnhisar
town and Hasanoğlu Hafız Mehmed, 3,000 prisoners died in 3.5 months
at the camp at Milos, where bad air and thirst were prevalent.  Even
though the prisoners found a cave filled with water, they had to buy a
can of water for 1.5 franks.  The prisoners were very badly treated  at
this camp by the Thracians, who gave one okka ((2.8 lbs)) of bread to
16 prisoners.

According to the statement by Hüseyinoğlu Osman of Hisar village,
there were 50 prisoners at the camp on Sakız Island.  At night the
Greek soldiers would come, make the prisoners lie on the ground,
threaten them with death and take their money.  According to the
statements of Mustafaoğlu Ali, Mustafaoğlu İbrahim, Aliosmanoğlu
İsmail and Aliosmanoğlu İbrahim, all of them from Söğüt’s Küre
village, when the Thracians came to the Milos camp, their leaders
gave 81 prisoners over to the Abazas, who had fled Anatolia, and
these traitors killed the prisoners in the most gruesome way,
throwing their bodies in a nearby cave afterwards.   The witnesses
saw that victims had neckties put around their necks and there were
knife and bayonet wounds on the lifeless bodies. At this same camp,
according to the statement of a Thracian with a broken arm and the
aforementioned 4 witnesses from Küre, some 1,800 Thracians were
boarded onto a very small and narrow ship.  The Greeks, using the
excuse that some prisoners had died in a stampede below decks
caused by a murder, actually threw 600 prisoners into the sea at the
Milos camp while they were still alive.  Many of them drowned in
the water and only the aforementioned witnesses were saved.

Beyaz Kale (White Fortress) at Salonica (Thessaloniki)

Again, based on statements of these same individuals, when they
were at the Beyaz Fortress in Salonica, about 600 prisoners were
ordered to be moved and a group of 150 of them, including the
witnesses, tied up the captain and crew during the voyage and
asked 3 Turkish captains on board to take them to Izmir. However,
when these individuals were being split up and boarded onto two
ships the Greeks responded and put all the prisoners into one ship,
stuffed them into the hold and only provided them water in return
for money.  Very few of the prisoners were allowed to leave to
relieve themselves.  Since the Greeks were well aware of the
prisoners’ weak points, they were happy to publicly humiliate
them in this way.  Upon arrival in Athens, the prisoners were kept
on the ship and the Athens government was informed about what
had happened.  So as punishment, the prisoners were taken to Milos,
famous for its putrid air and lack of water.

What's wrong with this picture? Nothing.

In Antakya district of Hatay province, pitbull 'Şeşe' had her pups
taken from her a while ago but her motherly instict remained.
So when, 10 days ago, Şeşe saw a stray kitten she adopted the
cat and now mothers and protects the kitten as if it were her own.

                                 One little happy family.

Owner Nurettin İmren explained that "I've been raising Şeşe for
the past 2, 3 years and she's now 6-years-old.  It's been a few
months since her pups left but she's put her motherly instinct
to good use with this kitten.  When bigger cats come near the
kitten Şeşe chases them away (!). Şeşe is quite loving toward the
kitten but that's normal for her - because we raised her with
love so she wouldn't harm anyone or anything.
