District Chief Karaca had officially dispatched the wife and kids
to pick up some tasty Ereğli kebab for him.

According to the details of the investigation file, a grey-colored
automobile with the official license plate 66 AA 108 ('66' is for Yozgat
province and 'AA' indicates 'official') was caught on radar doing 123
kph in Ereğli, Konya province, on 16 November 2019.

In the subsequent police check, no vechicle could be found that
corresponded to that license plate number. Police put out a notice about
the car and plate but could not find the vehicle.  On 20 January 2020,
a white car bearing this same license plate was snagged by radar doing
137 kph but, again, police could not locate the vehicle.

On 22 January, Ereğli police queried the Yozgat governor's office and
Yozgat University about the license plate, since 'AA' is reserved for
the offices of university presidents, the governor's office and the offices
of district chiefs.  In response, both the governor's office and the
university told Ereğli police that the license plate did not belong to
either of them.

As a result, Ereğli police put out a 'suspicious vehicle' bulletin to all
its units.  Then, on 2 February, a car bearing the license plate in
question was clocked doing 143 kph.  Police pursued and caught the
car.  It turned out that the car's real license plate is '66 KR 005' and
is registered to the "Village Services Delivery Service" of  the Yerköy
District Chief's office in Yozgat.

In the car were the wife of Yerköy District Chief Mustafa Karaca and
the couple's two children (!). The driver, Ferhat Akyürek, had been
previously convicted of drunk driving and had his license revoked (!).
The 'official' license plate that was on the car (66 AA 108) has never
been registered.  Of the various cars snagged for speeding by radar and
bearing this license plate, one was a private vehicle.

Ferhat Akyürek was fined 6,129 TL (about $1,000) and another
2,473 TL for driving without a license (!).  In addition, the Yerköy
District Chief's office was fined 2,473 TL and an investigation has
begun into "falsification of official documents" in regard to the various
cars that had used this unregistered license plate.

Yerköy is on the Delice stream that forms the border between
Yozgat and Kırşehir provinces.  Ereğli is east of Karaman in
Konya province and about 400 kilometers from Yerköy.
