//Ed. note:  Context: when Atatürk came from Istanbul
and landed at Samsun on 19 May 1919, Istanbul was
under British occupation.  Perhaps MRK needs some
remedial Turkish history lessons.//

Man is arrested for hanging out a towel showing the British flag ...
MRK picked the wrong evening to dry his clothes.

In Kayseri, Iranian Mohammad Reza K. (MRK, 32) hung a towel
resembling the British 'Union Jack' flag from his balcony on 19 May,
the Turkish holiday that commemorates Atatürk's landing at Samsun ,
on the Black Sea coast in 1919 and the start of the Turkish War of
Independence, sparking outrage among his neighbors.

MRK, who lives on the fifth floor of the 6-story apartment house on
Fuzuli Avenue in Kayseri's Kocasinan district, said that he merely
hung the towel out to dry.  Nevertheless, his neighbors called the
police who came and took MRK into custody and had the offending
towel removed from the balcony.

Kayseri'de İranlı Bir Vatandaş, Balkonuna İngiliz Bayraklı Havlu ...
MRK being escorted to his mandatory 'Turkish History-101'
course.

The Kayseri governor's office made the following announcement
about the incident:  "On the '19 May Atatürk Commemoration and
Youth and Sports Holiday'  our citizens came out on their balconies
with their (Turkish!) flags to sing the national anthem at 19:19 o'clock.
Seeing a foreign flag hanging from a balcony, our citizens reacted to
this affront to the nationwide program for the anthem-singing and
complained.  The individual who hung the foreign flag was questioned
and it was determined that he had no ulterior motive."
