Where's Friday?
Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kummer teaches transportation economics and
logistics at Vienna University. On 18 February, together with two
friends, he set out on a Mediterranean Sea tour in a catamaran-type
sailboat named 'Lagün 46'.
However (!), the coronavirus crisis erupted during their voyage and
Italy, Greece and Turkey closed their borders. So Kummer and his
shipmates left Majorca Island, off Spain, and headed for Göcek in
southwestern Turkey, where they anchored in order to wait out the
lockdown. The wait proved longer than expected but Göcek
fishermen rushed to provide food and drink to Kummer, who had
run out of both.
Back on dry land in Croatia.
When Hürriyet reported about his plight, German consulate officials
discussed Kummer's situation with their Turkish counterparts and
arranged for Kummer to board another boat that was heading for
Croatia. Diplomatic messages were exchanged with Croatia and
Kummer was able to land there, take a COVID-19 test and proceed
overland to Vienna.
After his 4-month quarantine on his boat, Kummer had words of
praise for the Turkish fishermen who helped him survive. He
said as well that he didn't miss a beat with his academic duties
during his 120 days at sea: "as I tried to work out my personal
situation, I didn't neglect my students and continued to teach
online. I tried to avoid hopelessness, remembering the Arab
proverb 'deserts are passed with humor and patience' and applied
that wisdom to the sea."
