The male version of an 'üfürükçü', giving a 'patient'
both the news and the weather.

In Kayseri, after the coronavirus spread in a village, claims emerged
on social media that a woman 'üfürükçü' (one who claims to cure
people by breathing on them (!)) had gone from house to house
infecting people.

On 30 April, Hatice A. went to the home of Halil Bayram, who had
died of a heart attack in Yemliha village of Kocasinan district, to pay
her condolences.  Returning home afterwards, however, Hatice hanım
experienced a high fever and coughing so she went to Kayseri City
Hospital, where she tested 'positive' for COVID-19 and remained in
the hospital for treatment.

Provincial Health Directorate officials took note of Hatice hanım's
visit to Halil Bayram's home and tested the other women who had
attended the condolence service there.  Some of the women tested
'positive' for COVID-19 so the village of 4,500 residents was put
under quarantine because coronavirus cases were detected in 30
homes there. Gendarmerie troops took security measures and
distributed masks.

Village motto: "Don't Breathe on Me"

When people in the village saw the claims circulating on social media
that an 'üfürükçü' woman had spread coronavirus they reacted with
outrage.  Resident Firdevs Çalışkan asserted that "everyone knows
everyone else here.  There are no 'üfürükçü's or any such types.  People
in Yemliha are hard-working folks who just want to have a better life."

Officials also sought to debunk the social media claims of a local
infection-spreading 'üfürükçü'.
