                         A long way from Odessa.

Two members of an 8-person group of mountain-climbers on a glacier
in the Kaçkarlar range in Rize's Çamlıhemşin district  fell into a rocky
area at about 9 o'clock on Thursday night.  When Ukranians Mykola
Shynkevych (45) and Maryna Shavkutina (35) lost their balance and
got stuck, two others from the group headed back to a valley where there
was cellphone coverage.

On Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock the group members contacted the Turkish
rescue center and teams from AFAD, UMKE and the Gendarmerie were
mobilized.  Some of the AFAD personnel were already in Rize for
flood relief.   After their arrival at the valley, the 22 rescuers had to walk
to the point where the women climbers had fallen because bad weather
prevented helicopter flights.

The rescuers passed through Mezovit Valley and reached the base of the
glacier, where they found the fallen climbers.  Last night at 1 o'clock,
the wounded climbers were taken on stretchers for a 5-hour trek to
Yukarı Kavron Valley and from there to Kaçkar State Hospital.
Shavkutina received treatment for a broken foot and Shynkevych for
a broken shoulder.  After 33 hours, the conditions of the injured climbers
was said to be good.
