             Speed-bump?

In Adana's Yüreğir district, a small truck hit 2-year-old
Elanur Tarhan and the driver fled the scene.  Police
tracked Syrian Amır Harba (24) and friend Abdulmelik
El Cevhir  (23) with surveillance cameras and finally
apprehended them in Hatay's Reyhanlı district, 240
kilometers away.

The incident occurred on 18 September around noon in
Yüreğir.  Driver Amır Harba was at the wheel of his
pick-up truck, plate number 31 MA 3211, when he hit
Elanur who was playing on the street. Along with friend
El Cevher, Harba fled in their truck transporting plastic
chairs.

Little Elanur died.  Police began their search for the
hit-and-run by examining photos of more than 100
vehicles at the incident scene during the time frame in
question.  After identifying Harba's truck, police
determined that he had left Adana province and they
arrested him and El Cevher in Reyhanlı.

The suspects were returned to Adana, where Harba
explained that "I was selling plastic chairs in the
neighborhood. Then it felt like I had run over
something (!) - I thought it might have been a speed-
bump or a rock.  If I had known it was a little girl
I would certainly have stopped." (!!)

Harba was jailed and El Cevher was released.
