Superwoman Drives a VW Bug

                               Nice ride! Şükran hanım.


Şükran Keskin (53) lives in Ankara.  She was married off at 14 and
had 5 children by the time she was 24.  Nevertheless, Şükran hanım
got herself a high school diploma and at age 27 she gained entrance
to Hacettepe University's Library Sciences Department.  So while
her 5 children went to elementary and high school, Şükran hanım
was going to university.

Şükran hanım separated from her husband at age 29 but despite
this she continued to raise her 5 children and finished Hacettepe,
after which Şükran hanım worked at everything from flea markets
to salesperson to secretary.  Her two boys and 3 girls all finished
university.

Collecting antiques gave Şükran hanım the opportunity to open
an antique shop of her own in Ankara's Kale quarter.  Next, she
changed her shop into a café and since she's her own boss, Şükran
hanım bought the car of her dreams - a red VW bug.  She has also
learned English, Ottoman and Persian (!):  "I never gave up hope and
I advise others not to either."
