'Milky' keeps himself busy...
In Malatya, 815,000 doses of sperm were produced in 2021 at a facility,
while total sales amounted to 870,000 doses. Sperm from a one-ton (!)
Simmental (Swiss Fleckvieh) bull named "Milky" - 44,500 doses -
fetched a record 1,250,000 TL (about $100,000).
The facility in question is in Akçadağ district and was established in
1865 on a 27 'dönüm' (one 'dönüm' = one quarter acre) site as
'Sultansuyu Çiftlikatu Hümayun' (Sultan's Sultansuyu Farm) and its
name was changed to 'Sultansuyu Harası' (Sultan's Mill). The facility
has been run by TİGEM (Agriculture Administration General
Directorate) since 1984.
Besides breeding bulls, purebred Arabian horses are bred here, thanks
to the regions's soil, plants, water quality and climate. Bull sperm has
been produced at the facility for 80 years as part of the 'Stud Bull
Improvement Project'. Black-speckled, Simmental and 'esmer' breed
bulls produce the sperm and after any diseases found in the genetic
structure are found in the Sultansuyu laboratory, the sperm is put up
for sale.
Somebody's gotta do it.
Sultansuyu's director Olcay Akın told AA (Anatolian News Agency)
that the facility was set up in the time of Sultan Abdülaziz to meet
the Ottoman Empire's needs for stud animals and seeds. Akın said that
the stud bull sperm is used for artificial insemination, an important
aspect for Turkey's animal breeding.
Akın noted that there are 39 stud bulls at the facility and that last year
"we had total production of 870,000 doses sold and 815,000 doses
produced. 'Milky' is our record-breaker. Our annual income was
5,200,000 TL and 'Milky' was responsible for 1,250,000 TL of this
amount. 'Milky' is our star!"
