report on this enduring subject.

                                 Hook, line and sinker.

In Balıkesir, a gang that bilked would-be gigolos has been broken up
by police, with 44 people taken into custody.  The "very professional"
operation had a call center-like set up, luring gigolo candidates on its
"Red Ajans" website.  There was even a "script" used by the call
center attendants to hoodwink the gigolo wanna-be's who called in.

According to the script, the caller would first be told that his
application had been accepted.  After that, the caller would be asked
if he was ready to participate in a "meeting" at his location - 99%
of them replied "of course!"  Next, the caller would be told how
lucrative a job he would have: "you'll get 3,000 TL (about $400)
for a 4-hour "meeting" and if it goes longer then you'll earn as much
as 5,000 TL.  Food, drink and lodging are provided by the woman!
Your money will be put in your account an hour before."

At this point, the candidate gigolos have been completely caught
in the gang's web.  320 TL is requested for a 3-month agreement
and 520 TL for a 6-month contract and the would-be gigolo's
bank account number and personal info is recorded by the gang.
Thinking that this small amount is peanuts compared to what they'll
be making, the candidates eagerly sign up and pay the fee.

However (!), once their payment is received, they can no longer
reach their "employer".  Most of them are too embarrassed to make
a fuss or scared their families will find out so they don't file
complaints with the police.

Singer Posts Crowded "Istanbul" Metro Photo, But It's From Madrid

(Sözcü Newspaper, 30 January 2021)

Fake Istanbul (sic, Madrid) "Nişantaşı" metro stop.

Singer Demet Akalın shared a photo she claimed had been taken of a
crowded subway car at the "Nişantaşı" station in Istanbul, in order  to
contrast the lack of social distancing in the metro compared to the
plight of Turkey's restaurants, which remain empty because of the
COVID pandemic restrictions.

Under the photo of the jam-packed subway car, Akalın wrote "the
restaurants are being made the scapegoats! What a shame!".  In
response, though, the Istanbul municipality's spokesman Murat
Ongun countered that "we hope that all sectors will return to normal
as soon as possible.  But the photo you used to make your point is
from Madrid, not Istanbul." (!)

Other followers of Akalın reminded her that "there's no metro stop
in Nişantaşı."  Akalın sheepishly explained that she got the photo
from her friend Deha Bilimler's account.

"Beat & Release": Or Beat the Rap, Escape to Batumi, and Release Yourself to Luxury

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 29 January 2021)

                             Gentlemen diners in Batumi.

Metro Turism's owner Galip Öztürk fled Turkey after his life sentence
for ordering a murder was confirmed.  Now, he and Derkan Başer,
wanted by Interpol as one of the leaders of a virtual betting gang, have
been located in Georgia, where the two fugitives have bought a
shopping  center.  They were seen in a photo taken at the restaurant
Başer runs in Batumi. (!)

Öztürk received a life jail sentence for having Kuvvet Köseoğlu killed
in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, in 1996.  Başer, who was the right-hand man of
Veysel Şahin's, the ruler of a 5 billion Euro virtual betting ring, was
freed by a Bakırköy, Istanbul, court on 13 April 2018 but ordered
arrested four hours later by the same court.  Nevertheless, he escaped
and after wandering in a number of countries, settled down in Georgia.
Last week, in response to the Interpol warrant, Georgian authorities
took Başer into custody but released him within a few hours. (!)

Başer and Öztürk are partners in a Batumi shopping center and run a
virtual betting ring from  Georgia that local Turks there are well aware
of.   The latest news is that the two Turkish fugitives have bought a
hotel in Batumi, where they live a life of luxury - Başer drives a Bentley
and runs his "ocakbaşı"-concept (grilled meat) restaurant.  Of course,
Öztürk is a frequent guest at the restaurant, where friends coming from
Turkey are wined and dined.

Öztürk was convicted in 2012 of forcing someone to sign a promissory
note but he was in and out of prison in no time.  With regard to the1996
killing, on 28 September that year Kuvvet Köseoğlu was murdered in a
house where he was hiding out in Beyoğlu.  Öztürk was indicted for
ordering the hit but the trial dragged on.  When the court finally decided
in 2018 to sentence Öztürk to life, he fled Turkey.

"Beat & Release": Hairdresser Gets President's Attention, But Too Late for His Victim

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 January 2021)

Hairdressers have access to sharp objects.

The police forensic medicine lab has determined that Ceylan Gündüz
(29), a nurse who was stabbed by her former boyfriend, hairdresser
Nazir Ilgın, in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, has lost the use of some of her
fingers and there is a lasting scar on her face.  Since Ceylan hanım
can no longer use some of her fingers she has had to abandon her
nursing career and return to her family in Adana.

On 6 June 2020, Ilgın beat his former girlfriend Ceylan hanım and,
based on her complaint, Ilgın was taken into custody but released on
judicial supervision. Two days later, though, Ilgın attacked and stabbed
Ceylan hanım, wounding her on her hand and neck.  This time he was
jailed.

After Ilgın was released the first time, President Erdoğan commented
during a meeting: "How in the world  was he released!" (so it didn't
happen again - but not soon enough for Ceylan hanım.)

Broken 'Trust' in Bayramiç

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 January 2021)

Ali Güven (65, and whose surname means 'trust') lives in Bayramiç
district of Çanakkale province.  Four years ago, his wife of 30 years,
Münire Güven, passed away and Ali bey decided to sell the land she
left for 35,000 TL (about $4,500) in order to find a new bride for
himself.

Güven, who suffers from KOAH, a lung disease, took up residence
in the home of a charitable person who asked for no rent.  A friend
suggested a woman named Gülay Ş. as a possible match for Ali bey
so he went to Izmir's Selçuk district to meet his prospective bride.
They hit it off (!) and returned to Bayramiç together.

But marital candidate Gülay hanım wanted gold as a condition for the
betrothal, forcing Ali bey to use the money from the sale of Münire
hanım's land to buy her some.  Ali bey then gave Gülay Ş. the gold and
some money to make marriage preparations.

However (!), as the couple approached Selçuk, Gülay hanım told
Ali bey "you wait here. I'm going to pick up a few things for myself
and then come back."  Ali bey waited for hours but Gülay hanım never
returned.  So he went back to Bayramiç, where he and the friend who
suggested Gülay hanım filed a criminal complaint against her with
the Bayramiç public prosecutor.

                             Destination: Fantasyland

Istanbul Airport police questioned a number of individuals trying to fly
with fake travel documents and the trail of the investigation led to
someone going by the moniker 'Doctor'.  Based on these leads, police
tracked down 'Doctor' Ömer Topsakal (49) and took him into custody.

In a search of Topsakal's home, police found 1,000 boarding cards for
both Turkish and foreign airlines, 52 fake passports of various nations,
24 fake mariner documents, residency cards from 34 different countries,
drivers licenses from six countries, seven ID cards, stamping seals from
124 different countries, an ultraviolet device, travel documents from
nine different nations, 28 passport ID pages and 23 visas from various
countries.

Of the 2,400 fake travel documents, mostly passports, seized at Istanbul
Airport over the past six months, the majority came from Topsakal (!).
Police determined that the fake documents taken from 34 passengers on
a flight from Istanbul Airport to Nice, France, in December 2019, had
been prepared by Topsakal at a price of $2,000 each.  Topsakal has been
jailed.

Renter Finds Freezer Full of Frozen Rats for His Predecessor's Python

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 January 2021)

Haute cuisine for the discerning python.

An Iranian businessman rented a furnished luxury flat in Bahçeşehir,
Istanbul, and moved in.  The day before yesterday, he did some food
shopping for the kitchen and returned to the flat around noon.  When
he opened the refrigerator he noticed some bags in the freezer
compartment.  He couldn't figure out what was in the bags so he
took them out and discovered to his horror that the contents were frozen
rats. (!)

The Iranian called the municipality and the police about the rats,
which were white like guinea pigs.  Taking no chances, the authorities
summoned teams from AFAD and UMKE (disaster response), along
with officials from the Istanbul health office.  In full quarantine
uniforms, the officials took possession of the rats.

                         Sort of like frozen ratsicles.

Police contacted the flat's owner who told them that the previous
renter had been a foreigner who had a pet python (!) and that,
presumably, the man kept the rats in the freezer for the snake's
subsequent meals.

The new Iranian renter told Hürriyet: "I just rented the place. After
shopping, I was putting the groceries in the refrigerator and when I
opened the freezer I was confronted by the frozen rats."

"Beat & Release": He Rapes, Tortures and Prompts Her Suicide... But Goes Free

                               His defense: "Slander!"

In Antalya, a woman named Ç.Y. attempted suicide after being raped
and is now nearly completely disabled.  Yet, alleged rapist Murat
Kaya has been released, sparking outrage in public opinion.  Womens'
rights defenders declared that "this was torture and torture is a crime.
The state must henceforth show zero-tolerance toward those who kill
and commit violence against women.  This person should be jailed for
trial.  If he is not, it will only encourage thousands of other men."

Ç.Y., the mother of one child, was working at a nightclub when, on 30
September 2019, she accepted a ride from nightclub customer Kaya to
drop her at a taxi stand after work.  But after passing the taxi stand
without stopping, Ç.Y. wanted to get out of Kaya's car.  Instead, Kaya
took Ç.Y. to a carpentry shop in Altınkale village, where he started to
beat and disrobe her.

Ç.Y. was able to call her mother H.B. to say "Mother, I'm dying. Take
good care of my son!"  Kaya then grabbed the phone from her and
proceeded to rape Ç.Y.  When H.B. called back, Kaya told her that
"I'm raping your daughter right now." and hung up.  (!)  In addition,
Kaya is accused of having a worker named G.K. forcibly have Ç.Y.
take drugs.  Next, after taking 850 TL (about $110) from Ç.Y.'s
purse Kaya left her along the road.

Ç.Y. filed a criminal complaint about the rape with police and got a
doctor's report to document the incident.  Both Kaya and G.K. were
taken into custody but asserted that Ç.Y.'s accusations were slander.
Checking security video from Kaya's workplace, police found that
the video for the date and time of the rape had been erased, although
some frames were recovered.

Nevertheless, both Kaya and G.K. were released on judicial
supervision, prompting Ç.Y. to attempt suicide.  Her sister saved
her at the last minute, but Ç.Y. is now bedridden and 99% disabled.

Pirates of the Gulf of Guinea Take 'Mozart''s Turkish Crew Hostage

türkçe  links to original Turkish article

(Milliyet Newspaper, 24 January 2021)

The Liberian-flagged M/V 'Mozart' cargo ship has been attacked by
pirates in the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. Turkish captain Mustafa
Kaya was taking the 222-meter ship from Lagos, Nigeria, to Cape Town,
South Africa, when the pirates boarded about 100 miles northwest of
the Sao Tome & Principe Islands, taking 15 crewmembers hostage and
killing one of them.

The pirates were armed with long-barrel weapons and succeeded in
taking the 'Mozart' despite the captain's call for help because the
ship was 170 kilometers from any source of assistance.  The pirates
changed the course of the 40,000 dead-weight-ton container ship,
which is managed by Boden Denizcilik of Istanbul, and left it in
the open waters off Nigeria, in the hands of ship's 4th captain and
two machinists.

An international search is underway for the Turkish crewmembers
taken hostage by the pirates.  It is thought that a large mother ship
enabled the pirates to use heavy weapons so far from land.  All
Turkish embassies in the region have been mobilized in response
to the incident and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu
has spoken with 4th Captain Furka Yaren about the seizure and the
current status of the ship by telephone.

We Thought Joe Biden was Irish. Turns Out He's Kurdish (Like Elvis)

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 23 January 2021)

                                        Family reunion?

Orhan Miroğlu,  a member of the AKP (ruling party)'s  MKYK (Central
Decision-Making Council) and the party's deputy media spokesman,
has related that "recently, a Kurdish friend of mine told me something
- even though it's hard to believe, although it isn't hard to discern
why he said it - that some people are saying that Joe Biden's real name is
Cımoye Bahattin Ağa and that he comes from a Kurdish family of the
Bıruki tribe that emigrated to the USA from Yerevan (Armenia)." (!)

Miroğlu's posting of this story on social media has created an uproar.
He explained to Hürriyet that "they said about Obama that after he came
everything would be fine but instead things got worse.  Now, this story
that's being told to the Kurds is creating expectations in the Middle East
and among the Kurds.  A public opinion has been created that Biden
will take important steps in the Middle East vis-a-vis the Kurdish
problem.  This is like the time they said that Elvis Presley was a Kurd
from Midyat." (!)

Continuing, Miroğlu said that "Biden isn't like Trump, who would
make pronouncements based on hearsay.  Biden has come with a
much stronger political make-up.  We'll see whether this is good or
bad for the people of the Middle East.  But these rumors are creating
hopes about Biden that are turning into narratives.  I don't take such
things seriously but the Kurds in the region want to get American
policy headed in their direction.  This should make countries with a
Kurdish problem think."

"There are about 30-35 million Kurds in the Middle East.  Why are
they nurturing these hopes about Biden?  I posted this on social media
to get people thinking, not to make them laugh.    Desperation
produces things like this and that's the same for all groups.  Yes, there
is a Kurdish problem in Iraq, Iran and Syria.  But in Turkey there have
been democratic initiatives on this matter and important breakthroughs.
If you ask the Kurds in our geographical backyard, those with a
conscience will say that Turkey is the country closest to a solution."

Biden's Kurdish wolfhound has only thrown fuel on the
flames.

$50 Million Worth of Fake Perfume (yes, fake perfume) Seized in Istanbul

Makes heroin smuggling look minor league.

In Istanbul, a police operation against a gang sending bottles of famous
knock-off perfumes to Europe resulted in the seizure of fake perfume
valued at 372.962 million TL (about $53.5 million) (!).  The 30cc and
50cc bottles of the very high-quality fake perfume sell for about $100
each.  A number of the 24 trucks (!) filled with the fake perfume were
displayed in the police parking lot.

"The wife's gonna want a piece of this raid."

Over the course of 20 days, police identified the warehouses and
production site used for the fake perfumes and last week raids were
made on nine different addresses in Başakşehir and Küçükçekmece.
The fake perfume was being produced at a site in Başakşehir and
stored at the other eight locations.

                             Best-smelling cops around.

Seized in the raids were over 464,000 bottles of fake perfume ready
for sale, 2,825 liters of fake perfume ready to be bottled, along with
966,571 boxes for the fake perfume, bottle caps, empty bottles,
perfume valves, perfume labels and packaging paper.  In addition,
two machines for filling the bottles and capping them were seized.
Four individuals were taken into custody.

The fake perfume was being sent to Germany, Romania, Serbia
and Bulgaria, along with other European countries and some Arab
nations.

'Dracula Bug' Sucking the Life Out of Hazelnut Trees in Trabzon

(Milliyet Newspaper, 21 January 2021)

                     Dracula's hazelnut-blood fetish.

In Trabzon's Maçka district, so far 750 dekar (about 200 acres) of
hazelnut orchards have been cleansed of the 'dracula bug' that has
been ravaging the trees, leaving another 1700 dekar in seven villages
still to be treated by the deadline of 26 February.

There is no other way to battle the 'dracula bug', which sucks the life
out of (!) hazelnut trees, other than burning all the orchards where the
bugs are found.  First, the branches are cut, gathered and burned.  The
trees themselves are then ripped out by their roots and buried deep in
the ground.

As with its master, the bug must be burned at the stake.

The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry plans to compensate the
hazelnut growers at 15 TL (about 10 cents) per kilogram during the
four-year period (!) when tree planting will be prohibited.

Catch My "Drift"? I Want You to Marry Me!

What could be more romantic than a "drift"-assisted
marriage proposal? Although there was a price to pay.

In Serik district, Antalya, İsmail Göksu (29) conspired with his friends
to spring a surprise wedding proposal on his girlfriend Gözde.  The
evening before last at around 7 PM,  they all met in the courtyard of the
Çandır Şehit Öğretmen Mustafa Saadettin Küçük middle school.  Amid
sparklers and confetti, Göksu got down on one knee and asked Gözde
hanım to marry him.

At this point, one of Göksu's friends, driving a car with plate number
07 FK 354, began to "drift" (drive in a continuous circle) around the
happy couple, while the other friends immortalized the moment with
their cell phone cameras, for sharing on social media.

However (!), the Gendarmerie also saw the activity on social media
and arrived at the scene to issue fines totalling 78,137 TL (about
$10,000) to driver S.C. (33), B.Ş. (29) and 22 others.

Göksu summed things up by saying "This had to be the wedding
proposal of the century.  We all got together at 7 o'clock but we
definitely practiced social distancing.  The only thing that was a bit
naughty was the "drift".  Otherwise, everything would have been
perfect.  My girlfriend accepted my marriage proposal.  That was
the most important and wonderful thing of the day.  The rest (fines)
was aggravation."

Osman Ç. (28), who lives in Mardin's Kızıltepe district, sexually
assaulted his niece Z.Ç. (16) for two days when she came to Mardin on
holiday from Switzerland in 2019.  Z.Ç. subsequently went to the police
station with her older sister to report the incident and Osman Ç. was
taken into custody but released after giving a statement.

Two months later, a police lab medical report identified sperm samples
in Osman Ç.'s room and Z.Ç.'s blood on a handkerchief there, so Osman
Ç. was arrested again and jailed in September 2020.  Nevertheless, at
the first hearing of the case on 13 January, despite the soundness of the
evidence and the public prosecutor's support for the victim, Osman Ç.
was released. (!)

As Osman Ç. left the prison he was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers,
complete with "davul ve zurna" (musical group).(!)  This prompted
Z.Ç.'s older sister P.Ş. to say "My sister was 16 when she went through
this.  We filed a complaint right away but the rapist has gone free.  My
sister's psychology is a mess and she's tried to commit suicide twice.
My  mother can't leave her side for a moment.  The police lab report
confirmed what my sister said, yet five months later he's out.  Shame
on justice!  And he's met by celebrations with pomp and music.  I want
the judge and prosecutor to explain how they can release rapists like
him."

TNT History Archives: Americans Were Confused by Multiple "Kâzım"s in Turkish Army (1923)

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 17 January 2021)

The year was 1923 and the new Turkish Republic was taking its first
steps as a nation.  On 1 November, Fethi Okyar was elected as the head
of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBBM), as new laws were
promulgated and the army remained on alert, salving its wounds after
years of war.

Ankara, the new capital, was filled with foreign diplomats and
intelligence agents but for the American agents the most daunting
matter was figuring out all the officers in the army named "Kâzım".
Diplomatic relations with the U.S. had been cut off since 1917 but now
American agents of the forerunner of the CIA were busy in both Ankara
and Istanbul. Surnames were nonexistent in Turkey until 1935, adding
to the confusion over the plethora of "Kâzım"s.

One of the U.S. military intelligence agents in Ankara prepared a report
about the 10 "Kâzım"s in the army, which had bewildered him, so he
tried to sort out the "Kâzım"s for Washington with his report dated
16 November 1923.

"Here are some notes about the different "Kâzım"s currently in the
Turkish Army:

Kâzım Karabekir Paşa: General Inspector of the First Army

Köprülü Kâzım Paşa: Minister of Defense (later he adopted the surname
Özalp and served as TBMM chief.)

Diyarbakırlı Kâzım Paşa: Commander of the Sixth Army Corps ( he took
the surname İnanç and later served as army chief, as a governor and a
parliamentarian.)

Benli Kâzım Paşa: Commander of the 12th Division ( he took the surname
Sevüktekin and also served as a parliamentarian.)

İzmirli Kâzım Paşa: Commander of the 8th Division and the brother-in-law
of Enver Paşa (he took the surname Orbay and served as chief of the
general staff.)

Manastırlı Kâzım Paşa: Commander of the 2nd Division, with the
Albanian nickname "Kiasko". (he took the surname Dirik and served as
army commander and as a governor.)"

NOTE: Information in parenthesis added by Hürriyet.

After listing these "paşa"s, the report continued: "There are two other
"Kâzım"s in the army, with the rank of colonel but they will probably
be promoted to "paşa" soon: Kemahlı Kâzım Bey and Musa Kâzım Bey,
both of whom serve on the staff on the eastern front.  There is also another
Musa Kâzım Bey, who is a parliamentarian from Afyonkarahisar."

Colonel Kemahlı Kâzım Bey was later promoted to general and took the
surname Kıvılcım.  The report was posted social media by war history
researcher Erhan Çifci.

Loud Talker's Neighbors Save Him From a Bilking

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 17 January 2021)

A rarity: grateful for nosy neighbors.

In Bakırköy, Istanbul, on 13 January, Kevork Y. (59) got a phone call.
The caller said he was a policeman and that Kevork Y.'s ID card had
been found at the scene of a jewelry store robbery.  In addition, the
caller told Kevork Y. that he was the prime suspect so he should "send
us any money you have and we can check the serial numbers."

Kevork Y. has a hearing problem so he speaks loudly and, as a result,
his neighbors heard the conversation and called the real police right
away.  Concurrently, they told Kevork Y. that "the real police are on
their way.  Don't open the door to anyone before they arrive."

Meanwhile, the caller, hoping to increase his credibility, told Kevork
Y. to prepare a note that the person coming to collect the money would
sign.  Kevork Y. dutifully put all his money in a bag and awaited the
"civilian policeman who will come to get the money.", as the caller
instructed.  Soon after, someone came to take the money from Kevork
Y. and once he did, the real police, staked out at the building, took
hoodwinker Mehmet Ali K. (43) into custody.

The money, $12,850, was returned to Kevork Y.  and Mehmet Ali K.
was taken to jail.  Kevork Y. noted that "I went to the bank and took
out all my money to give to someone coming from the 'prosecutor's
office'.  The moment after he came the real police arrived and
apprehended him.  I'm very grateful to the police." (not to mention
his nosy neighbors!)

A Miracle! Kebap Grill "Appears" in Abandoned Church in Şanlıurfa

(duvaR.english website, 15 January 2021)

Just "blessed take-out" available right now. COVID, you know.

A kebab chef was criticized for hosting a barbecue in an abandoned
ancient church in southeastern Turkey on 14 January. The 19th-century
structure had been abandoned after treasure hunters ransacked it, locals
reported.

Dating back to the 19th century and located about 10 kilometers from
the nearest settlement, the Germuş Armenian Church has become a spot
for squatters since its abandonment, one local noted.

"Treasure hunters destroyed this place. Now, people come here to
drink, or grill kebabs," Dağyanı Neighborhood resident Übeyit İnci said,
urging the state to swiftly restore the ancient structure.

Tourism Ministry to update poster with a menu.

Pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Deputy Garo Paylan also
slammed the chef's abuse of the ruins in a tweet. One local responded to
Paylan's tweet with more photos of the structure, adding that they've
been trying to rally public support to save the church to no avail, and
that it has essentially been left to rot. "I don't know what to say, shame!"
Paylan said.
