(Hürriyet Newspaper, 31 March 2024)

It's just a mess...but it'll have to do till the real mess gets here.

Along the road at Göynükçukuru village in Çankırı province's Çerkes
district, the driver of a car with plate number 16 ADB 879 pulled over
to the side of the road with car trouble.  Police arrived to help driver
Mehmet Adem and took measures to ensure safety during the rescue.

However (!), Shota N., the driver  of a TIR (tractor-trailer) with
Georgian plates and loaded with kitchenware, plowed into the disabled
car and the police rescuers, spilling the kitchenware all over.   As the
result of the crash, car driver Adem, his father Abdurrahman Adem,
his mother Tokezban Adem and his sister Yurdağül Davan were killed.
Shota N. and policemen D.G. and B.K. were slightly injured.

It took five hours to clear the TIR and the kitchenware from the road.

"Beat & Release": Professor in Northern Cyprus "Wanted" by Canada for 13 Years on Sexual Assault Charges is Being Deported

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 30 March 2024)

                      Canada "wants" him, badly.

At a time when Northern Cyprus is reeling from "fake diploma and
corruption" scandals that erupted at a university, it turns out that at a
separate university a professor who runs three departments in the
engineering faculty has been "wanted" by Canada for 13 years (!).

Consequently, the Northern Cyprus Council of Ministers has declared
Prof. Dr. Ali Turjman to be an "illegal migrant" who is being sought on
charges of sexual assault and attempted murder.  Turjman, who teaches
at Near East University (YDÜ) in Lefkoşa is being deported.  But since
Northern Cyprus does not have direct ties to Interpol, Turjman is being
deported via Turkey.

Turjman, who is a native of Kuwait, completed his doctoral degree at
Queens University in Canada in 2011 but was charged with the crimes
of sexual assault, attempted murder and kidnapping. (evidently, he
successfully fled from Canada).

In 2019 Turjman was teaching at Antalya Science University and has
published more than 190 scholarly papers.  On YDÜ's website there
is a 37-page (!) biography of Turjman.  Nevertheless, YDÜ has yet
to make a comment on Turjman's deportation.

"Meow & Release": Beloved Cat "Faruk" Gets Test Proctor Fired, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 March 2024)

                                  Geçmis olsun Faruk!

Last Saturday, the IELTS test, which is aimed at excusing high school
students from having to take university preparation classes, was given
at the Terakki Foundation Schools in the Etiler neighborhood of
Beşiktaş, Istanbul.

F.A. was serving as the proctor for the test and wanted to shoo away a
cat named Faruk who entered the classroom through an open window.
However (!), Faruk regularly comes into classrooms and roams the
corridors of the school, about which F.A. was unaware since he was
assigned for the test by an outside company.

In any case, in his ardor to shoo away Faruk F.A. either caused or
forced Faurk to fall from the second-floor classroom.  Because of
this controversy about the beloved Faruk, IDP, the firm that assigned
F.A. to proctor the test,  disowned and fired him. (!)

As for Faruk, veterinarian Batuhan Nathur stated this about the
feline's condition: "I can't yet give you good news because Faruk's
condition right now is critical.  If everything goes well, Faruk will
fully recover in 2-3 weeks."

"Pray & Release": Mosque and Minarets Demolished - Blocked Sabiha Gökçen Airport's New Runway, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 March 2024)

                    And during Ramazan! Tövbe! Tövbe!

A new runway was recently opened at Sabiha Gökçe Airport in Istanbul -
Runway-24.  However (!), the minarets of a nearby mosque presented an
obstacle to the new runway and the decision was made to demolish
them.

Yet, another problem has arisen with the mosque in question: the dome
of the mosque is interfering with the ILS approach system's functions.
In addition, a cargo company's office must be shaved down.  So, after
the upcoming Ramazan holiday is over the mosque's dome will be
demolished and a new, lower one built instead.

If that wasn't enough, the new runway's lighting system is still not in
place and the fact that planes must make a 230-degree turn to reach
the terminal has slowed arrivals considerably.

Also, now that the AJet airline company has made Sabiha Gökçen it's
main base of operations the terminal building has been found to be
insufficient but it is unknown when construction of the second terminal,
to be built by Tabanlıoğlu Mimarlık, will begin.

And the Malaysian company (!) that manages Sabiha Gökçen Airport's
General Directorate has appointed Serhat Soğukpınar to the leadership
position but the Turkish side has yet to make a similar appointment.

"Beat & Release": Killer's Crocodile Tears in Court Are Shed for Naught - No Sentence Reduction, in Ankara

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 March 2024)

                          "I want my mommy!!"

Samet Özgül, a student in the history department of Gazi University in
Ankara, was working as a motorcycle courier when on the night of 5
November 2022 he was involved in a traffic dispute and then beaten by
three people and stabbed to death in his throat.  The killer, Halil İbrahim
Demirci, was given a life sentence, while his father Mustafa Demirci
and Bülent Acıkgöz were each given 12-year sentences in connection
with Özgül's murder.

An appeals court in Ankara voided these sentences, asserting that
there was not enough convincing evidence for the crime of "aiding an
intentional murder" to convict Mustafa Demirci and Bülent Açıkgöz.
In addition, this court ruled that "despite Halil İbrahim Demirci's
regret he was not given a 'good behavior' sentence reduction." (!)

The first court then re-tried the case and reaffirmed the original
conviction of Mustafa Demirci and Bülent Demirci because the two
"distracted the victim's attention and hindered his self-defense" so
that Halil İbrahim Demirci could carry out the murder.

With regard to withholding a "good behavior" sentence reduction for
the killer, the court explained that "the suspects left the victim to die
and walked away calmly."  Additionally, the court noted that Halil
İbrahim Demirci's crying in court (!) to emphasize his regret was not
a convincing reason to warrant the reduction.

Will wearing a tie in court be the next reduction to fall?

"Beat & Release": Two Women Who Faked Being a Lawyer and a Doctor, Respectively, Jailed

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 25 March 2024)

                 Madam councilor, before and after.

When the Adana public prosecutor got a tip that Betül S. (37) was
stalking the corridors of the Adana courthouse as a would-be lawyer
using another real lawyer's name and trying to hoodwink potential
clients, an investigation was begun.

Betül hanım took pictures of herself dressed in lawyer robes in
courtrooms and the courthouse restaurant and posted them on social
media.  She was arrested in one of the courtroom corridors.  A search
of her home yielded a false lawyer ID, lawyer robes, an unlicensed
revolver (!) and many legal documents evidently used in her scam.
She was brought up on a number of related charges and jailed.

The incident with Betül hanım brought to mind the case of Ayşe Özkiraz,
who tried to pass herself off as a doctor in Tekirdağ Çerkezköy State
Hospital but was caught and jailed when she drew the suspicions of the
real doctors there.

Ayşe hanım even had a wreath sent to Çerezköy Hospital on the occasion
of her birthday last October with the message "We love you - the pride of
Çapa! Happy Birthday to my Dr. Ayşe" (Çapa Medical School is in
Istanbul).

Ayşe hanım's father Ali Özkiraz, a farmer in Tokat province, lamented
that "she duped me for years.  I sold my tractor to be able to send her
money.  She got 35,000 TL from me for medical books." (!)

A birthday selfie, in more ways than one.

"Beat & Release": From Africa With Love...and Maybe HIV?, in Karabük

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 24 March 2024)

                                  The usual suspects.

On a "confession" page opened in the name of Karabük Univeristy on
social media, some Turkish students are asserting that after having been
"together" with foreign Black students they have gone to the hospital
suspecting they have contracted HPV or HIV (!).   Meanwhile, the
Karabük provincial health directorate has announced that there has not
been an increase in either HIV or HPV-positive incidents in the city.

The "confession" page on Instagram (kbuitiraf.et) is full of assertions
from Karabük students that they think they have contracted venereal
diseases after having had sexual relations with African students, and
that although the Africans do not show signs of the diseases they may
be carrying them.  Yet, local health officials contend that there has been
no uptick in venereal diseases.

According to the university's 2023 activities report, there are 45, 890
students at the school, 11, 908 of whom are foreigners - 8,673 males
and 3,235 females.   The largest number of foreign students are Syrians
(1,498), followed by Chadians (1,386) and Iraqis (844).   The former
dean of Karabük University, Prof. Dr. Refik Polat stated that "we have
more than 1,300 Chadian students out of 5,000 students from Africa
who will bring Karabük to Africa and Africa to Karabük."  Polat was
succeeded by Prof. Dr. Fatih Kırışık last year.

"Beat & Release": Just Another Routine Murder, This Time in Izmir

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 23 March 2024)

A very modest jewelry store and the impulsive, elusive F:B.

The evening before last in Izmir's Bornova district, Enes Özkurhan (24)
came to a police station and told police that there was a dead body in
the trunk of a car bearing license plate number 35 TU 261, parked at a
private hospital.   The police went to the scene and found the body of a
male with three bullet holes in the head.  They then determined that the
deceased was Bekir Bozar (68), the owner of a jewelry store.

In his statement to police, Özkurhan "explained" that on the evening of
19 March his childhood friend F.B. (24) summoned him to drive his
car, in which F.B. and Bozar were passengers.  They next headed to
Bozar's home to drop him off but en route F.B. and Bozar got into an
argument about money, prompting F.B. to shoot Bozar in the head three
times. (!)

After the murder, Özkurhan and F.B. put Bozar's body in the car trunk
and headed for Manisa, returning to Izmir the next day, whereupon
Özkurhan went to the police station and F.B. fled.    It turned out that
F.B. had stolen gold from Bozar's jewelry store to settle debts he had
with 14 people.  Özkurhan was jailed and police are looking for F.B.

"Beat & Release": She Robbed 8 Million Euros in Germany, Fled to Turkey and Has Now Surprisingly Surrendered in Bremen

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 22 March 2024)

                             She'll be safer in jail.

Yasemin Gündoğan robbed more than 8 million Euros from the company
she worked for in Bremen, Germany, in 2021 and fled to Turkey.  Now,
though, she has surrendered to police at Bremen airport, but the question
remains: why now?

Speculation is rife about Yasemin hanım's surprise decision to turn herself
in but it may be that she felt threatened.  Right after her heist, Professor
Adolf Gallwitz, a psychologist working in  the Villingen-Schwenningen
police department, told Bild newspaper "this great amount of money
would draw the attention of many criminals, who would be inclined to
track her down anywhere in the world.  She would be vulnerable to
blackmail and possibly kidnapping."

German Criminologist Axel Petermann opined that "there are many
reasons that a person might surrender after committing a crime like
this.  She might have spent all the money or criminal pursuers may have
found out where she was hiding and were closing in on her.  Another
possible reason for surrendering could be a crisis of conscience about
having committed the crime and the related regret.  And constantly
living on the run is extremely stressful."

From Bremen to Berlin to Vienna overland, by plane to Istanbul
and Izmir.  Then perhaps to Bilecik, where a German insurance
company filed a complaint with the Turkish prosecutor,
alleging that Yasemin hanım was in the market for a plot
of land there.

                          A lavish "butterfly effect".

Amid the investigations into social media "phenoms" like the couple
Dilan and Engin Polat who flaunted a luxurious and extravagant
lifestyle, another couple - Dr. Tayyar Taylan Öz and his wife Özlem Öz -
also with "beauty clinics", theirs advertised with the name "Drtayyaröz"
(!), were caught up in the investigative net.

As a result, on 28 November 2023 the Anatolian Public Prosecutor
indicted the Öz couple on organized crime charges and their assets were
seized in December, with an administrator, Bünyamin Ergün, appointed
to take charge of said assets.

However (!),  Ergün, who was living with his wife in the Başakşehir
district of Istanbul, experienced severe marital problems and moved out
to live separately.  The night before last Ergün returned to the 9th floor
flat in Başakşehir but his wife wouldn't let him in.  This turn of events
prompted Ergün to jump 9 stories to his death (!).

Before his suicide Ergün left this note: "There are a lot of bad things
going on but no one is to blame. Whatever I've done I've done it to
myself."  As for his wife, she told police "we've had some problems
for a while.  He is prone to violence and I was afraid he would harm
me so that's why I didn't open the door."

Oh, the wreckage the ostentatious "phenoms" have wrought...

"Beat & Release": Young Turks Hoping to Enter USA Via Mexico Face Increased Scrutiny

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 20 March 2024, article by Uğur Cebeci)

                                No Turks need apply.

The number of young Turks wanting to enter the USA via Mexico is
increasing every day.  Consequently, measures have begun in Istanbul
to screen potential illegal asylum seekers prior to flights.  These measures
are being implemented not by Turkish Airlines (THY) but, rather, by
private security company.  Boarding may be prevented and even those
who successfully board may be returned from the countries they land in.

Henceforth, it will be more difficult for Turkish youths to fly to Mexico,
Colombia, Panama, Cuba and Brazil.

The number of Turks entering the USA through Mexico:

October- December 2019: 636
2021: 6,945
2022: 21,968

Most of the travelers in question have been from Çorum and Ağrı
provinces (!).

Mexican visas can be obtained with no charge over the internet. But
regardless of hotel reservations or other "proof" of remaining in
Mexico or the other mentioned countries, based on the new stricter
measures you may be blocked from boarding.  Increasingly, Turkish
youths are voicing their frustration with these measures on social
media and on Instagram, in particular.

But many Turkish youths have returned to Turkey having lost their
money to traffickers in Mexico and elsewhere, and, of course, having
failed to enter the USA illegally.   Many of those who have snuck into
the USA have found themselves going hungry and homeless.

                         Perhaps the only eyewitness.

People who went to get water from a fountain at Bahçköy Hunca, in

can: "there's a body down the hill" (!).

Police were summoned and found the unrecognizable body of a male
below a cliff.  In order to recover the body from the rough terrain,
firefighters were called and after two hours the body was brought
up to the road and sent to the police forensic lab for an autopsy and
possible identification.

Dilek Sönmez, who alerted police initially, stated that "we came to

"Fleece and Release": State Bridge "Sold" by Hoodwinker to Junkman, in Ankara

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 18 March 2024)

Once upon a time there was a bridge...

Ziya K., asserting that the historic "Gömleksiz Köprüsü" bridge in
Ankara "is mine" (!) sold it for 60,000 TL (about $1,850), calling to mind
a fellow nicknamed "Sülün Osman" ("sülün" means a brisk, lively little
man) who years ago also sold state goods as if they were his own to dupes.

When Ziya K. was brought to court for his punishment he asked for time
to pay his debt to society, but he was ordered to pay 140,000 TL (about
$4,200) by the time of the case's next hearing on 8 May.

In 2022, Gendarmerie troops on patrol in Beypazarı district of Ankara
noticed that the "Gömleksiz Köprüsü" bridge was missing (!).  This
prompted the Gendarmerie to write to the Highways General Directorate
(HGD), asking "did you remove the bridge?".  A negative reply from HGD
started an investigation by which the Gendarmerie learned that the bridge
had been dismantled in a week's time, with the iron and other parts carted
away in trucks.  It turned out that Ziya K. told junkman Y.Ç. that "they
gave me the bridge." (!)

At the first hearing of the case on 6 March, Ziya K. asked to make good
on his debt but noted that "we didn't do anything in secret.  I asked the
government to give me the bridge and assumed I'd get a positive response."
Unimpressed, the court ordered Ziya K. to pay the HGD 140,000 TL by
8 May.

As for junkman Y.Ç., he "explained" that "I'm a junkman so I sold the
iron that came from the bridge.  Ziya K. told me that HGD gave him the
bridge so I sent him 60,000 TL via the account of D.K." (!)

Girls! Look out! He's coming for your purses and phones!

On the night of 6 March in Bağcılar district of Istanbul, two thieves with

their identities as T.Ş. and A.Ç., taking them into custody.  It turned out

19, 24 and 25 February.  These motorcycles were found in an enclosed

Ukrainian citizen Mishel Lazerenko, who lives in Antalya, had her
bicycle stolen from in front of her house but, like a detective, she
succeeded in having police find not only her bike but those stolen
from others, as well. (!)

Mishel explained what happened to Hürriyet as follows:

"When I came home from work I saw that my bike had been stolen.
Right away, I filed a complaint with the police.  Next, I downloaded
an app for a website selling second-hand goods and opened an account
with the name "Damla".  Within an hour I saw my bike up for sale so
I contacted the seller but, in order not to attract suspicion, I haggled
a bit about the price.  In fact, at my insistence, the seller reduced the
price by 1,000 TL.  Once we settled on a price and I got the address
I informed the police."  (!)

"En route to the seller's address, two policemen followed me in their
car.  I met the seller in front of a TIR (tractor-trailer).  When he opened
the door of the TIR I saw tens of bikes inside.  The police checked the
serial number on my bike to officially determine that it was mine.
The rest of the bikes were returned to their rightful owners."  (!)

was arrested but one never knows around here...)

Go, yes, but don't take anyone with you.

The evening before last, Mervegül hanım's bereaved mother Hatice Kurt

"Girls, this is Mervegül's funeral shroud!  Her shroud!  Girls, everthing

Why am I doing this? As a lesson to you all.  You may think over and

Must be such a wonderful place to live (!).

Cihan Oral, a married man who lives in Azaklı village of Korkut district,
Muş province, kidnapped Ayşe İnceyol (27) nearly a year ago.  A short
while ago the İnceyol family found Ayşe hanım and brought her back
home in Arpalıseki village, Kavakbaşı township, in Bitlis province's
Mutki district.

Enraged, Oral went to the İnceyol's house last night at about 3 o'clock
in the morning with a long-barrel rifle.  An argument ensued (!)
prompting Oral to shoot dead Ayşe hanım, her father Musa İnceyol (65)
and her older brother Neytullah İnceyol (35) and seriously injure Ayşe
hanım's mother Nermin İnceyol (54).

The Gendarmerie is currently searching for Oral.
