You just never know who might be calling...
Muammer Şen, who lives in Anamur district of Mersin province,
woke up 5 years ago and saw that his skin had turned yellow. At
the hospital Şen learned that he had cirrhosis and began treatment,
getting himself a place on the list for a liver transplant, as well.
At about 1 AM the night before last, Şen's telephone rang but seeing
that the calling number began with a zero he assumed it to be a
bogus call. Then a second call came from the same number. Again,
Şen did not pick up the phone. The third time, though, Şen took
the call and it was from Akdeniz University Hospital in Antalya.
Upon learning that a liver donor had been found, Şen immediately
went to Antalya and a successful liver transplant operation ensued.
Şen said afterwards that he will always answer all his calls
henceforth.
Anamur is about in the middle of the map, on the Med coast.

Mayoral Perquisites

(Sözcü Newspaper, 29 June 2016)
Hizzoner embraces his only Moldovan constituent.
Amasra Mayor Emin Timur's intimate poses with his Moldovan
girlfriend have become the talk of the town. The Mayor and Roza
İarcenka have been seen kissing in public and Timur even took
İarcenka to Istanbul in his official vehicle. As the scandal has
been exposed in local media the people of the district are up in arms.
Commenting to Sözcü on the situation, Mayor Timur stated that
"I'm single. She's my fiancé. We'll be married at the end of the
summer. She's not Russian, as people have been saying. She's
Moldovan." It turns out, however, that 'bachelor' Timur has been
married to Gül Timur for 25 years and they have two children. (!)
Role model
Gül hanım's brother Fırat Eyidoğan commented that "the mayor
isn't telling the truth. He's my brother-in-law, married to my
sister Gül. They're getting a divorce but it's not final yet so he
can't call himself a bachelor."
Mayor Timur confirmed that he took his 'fiancé' to Istanbul in
his official car but claimed that "I'm getting medical treatment
there." The Mayor, who is a member of the ruling AKP party,
lamented that "it's a shame that they're getting into my personal
life so deeply."
Mayoral treatment trail.

She'd Rather Not Wait for Alimony

Vedat with plenty of elbow room, along with a photo of the
couple in happier (and better furnished) times.
In Izmir, Vedat E., who married his second wife Z.E. (51) three
years ago, was robbed blind by Z.E. Vedat had gone to their
summer house in Urla from Karabağlar with his wife, who then
advised him that she wanted to return to Izmir to do some shopping
in the Kemeraltı section of the city.
When Z.E. did not return that evening, Vedat hopped in his car
and went to Izmir, only to find that everything in the house, from
drinking glasses to the chandeliers, had been loaded onto a truck
and taken away by Z.E. Vedat tried to call his wife but received
no answer.
"She even took the toaster!"
Vedat then went to the police station and learned that his wife
and some of her friends had loaded all the furniture and household
goods onto a truck and headed for Antalya. According to the police,
since these were goods shared in marriage Vedat had no legal
recourse.
Z.E. had also taken 5,000 TL that Vedat had kept in a notebook,
in connection with his duties as the apartment building tenants
director. A bewildered Vedat claimed that there were no problems
between he and his wife (!). He added that he had signed over the
deed to the house to her, effective upon his death. Besides some
pictures and the oven, which could not be removed, Vedat found
nothing left in the house.

Does a Bear Sit in the Woods?

Of course not, he migrates.
There has been an important finding made with regard to
research and protection of wild life in eastern Anatolia,
thanks to a project led by Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu, the head
of the Kars North Nature Association. Dr. Şekercioğlu and
his team have determined that the steppe bears living in the
Sarıkamış region are the first bears in the world to have
ever been tracked in migration, using satellite transmitters.
Oops! Sorry!
Dr. Şekercioğlu, who is an academician working at both Utah
and Koç Universities, worked with a team made up of scientists
from Zurich, Kafkas, Zagreb and Boğaziçi universities. By
means of the satellite transmitters, they were able to determine
that the bears left Sarıkamış in the Fall and went to Şavşat in
Artvin province to spend the winter, a round-trip of about 250
kilometers.
According to Dr. Şekercioğlu, there has never been any other
documentation in world scientific literature of steppe bears
migrating in this way.
Şavşat, Artvin, at the red dot. Sarıkamış is to the south.
