"To the battlefront, you turkeys!"
Grasshoppers have invaded 9,000 out of 20,000 'dekar' (one dekar =
1,000 square meters or .247 acres) in the Eynif Pasture in İbradı
district of Antalya, famous for its wild horses. So, in order to battle
the grasshoppers biologically, villagers were given turkeys and after
two weeks of acclimatization the turkeys were turned loose in the
pasture.
The 2,000-strong "army of turkeys" succeeded in reducing the
grasshopper population in the pasture by half in just one week.
Fikret Canbaş, the village chief of Orman village, explained that
the grasshoppers inflict great damage and in this regard, he noted
that "the Eynif Pasture is very big. Every year we battle the
grasshoppers like this with 2-5,000 turkeys, which is much better
than using pesticides."
Deniz İlaslan Çürek, the head of research and development for
the local municipality said that "from time to time we used
pesticides but they weren't effective. In any case, we think the
biological approach is healthier."
