"Record & Release": Video With Late Artist's Song Prompts Copyright Lawsuit Against Truck Driver, in Trabzon

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Sözcü Newspaper, 30 November 2025)

                     Compliment gouged for easy money.

In Trabzon, Salim Kalfa (65) recorded a one-minute video from his
balcony with his mobile phone camera, adding the chorus of his
favorite Black Sea artist Kazım Koyuncu's song "Uy aha" to it and
sharing it on his social media account. Four months after the post, ,
the artist's legal heir, his brother, filed a criminal complaint against
Kalfa, alleging "violation of moral, financial, and related rights."
Giving his statement at the police station, Kalfa said, "I love him very
much. There are millions of posts like this. They demanded 50,000 TL
from me in a complaint. We couldn't understand it."

Kalfa, a TIR (tractor-trailer) driver living in the city, made the video
on his balcony in the Ayasofya neighborhood on June 15th. He added
the chorus of "Uy aha," composed for Trabzonspor football club 21
years ago, to a video he shared on his social media account.

Four months after the post, Koyuncu's brother, the artist's legal heir,
filed a criminal complaint against Kalfa with the Trabzon Chief Public
Prosecutor's Office under Article 71 of the Law on Intellectual and
Artistic Works, alleging "violation of moral, financial, and related
rights." The complaint requested 50,000 TL (about $1,200) in
damages.

Upon learning that legal action had been initiated against him for
"unauthorized and unlawful use without providing any permission
or documentation of entitlement,"  Kalfa went to the police station
and gave a statement.

Expressing his love for Kazım Koyuncu and stating that he had no
knowledge of the copyrights, Kalfa said, "On June 15th, I shared a
song by Kazım Koyuncu on social media, along with a video I shot
of the Ayasofya neighborhood. I wanted to use this song because we
love Kazım Koyuncu, and he was a Trabzonspor fan. I love him, so I
didn't share it with any ill intentions. The police called me and said,
'You made a music video for Kazım Koyuncu's song.' They said it
wasn't legal to post it on social media. A song that shouldn't be posted
shouldn't be available on social media anyway. There must be
copyrights.  So I posted it. Whether I made a mistake or not. Kazım
Koyuncu's brother filed a complaint saying, 'I shared the song.' I
couldn't understand it."

Kalfa, who stated that the post had no commercial purpose, said,
“Do they need money? I don't know. A fine of 50,000 TL was requested.
We already share the songs of Ferdi Tayfur, Müslüm Gürses, and many
deceased artists. There is a world of singers. Kazım Koyuncu is one
of our people. I'm proud of his songs. I never imagined something like
this would happen to me. I didn't encounter any restrictions or obstacles
while sharing. So, there's no problem. Kazım Koyuncu is someone
who has become a symbol of Trabzonspor and Trabzon. We learned at
the police station that 40 people in Trabzon have been complained
about in this way. You could have 40,000 people across Turkey. Filing
a lawsuit against 40 people in Trabzon doesn't suit Kazım Koyuncu's
family. I'm a truck driver anyway. I'm someone who shares posts
regularly on long-distance trips. I didn't do anything for money. I didn't
do it with malicious intent either. If I shaıred something bad about
him, maybe they'd be right. I love the man anyway, and I'll never forget
Kazım Koyuncu. I know.” he said.

"Wreck & Release": Building's Demolition Leaves Adjacent Structure's Rooms Exposed, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Sabah Newspaper, 29 November 2025)

Just hope everyone was "decent" at the time.

In Istanbul's Bahçelievler district, when a 38-year-old, 5-story,
apartment building was demolished, rooms in the adjacent
building were exposed because it shared a wall with the
demolished building (!).

Bathrooms, bedrooms and studies in the surviving building
were open for all to see, prompting residents to put up
tarpelins or quickly brick-up the exposed rooms.  One
resident, Yeter Çelik, lamented that "The demolition firm
claimed they were blameless because our building didn't
have its own wall.  Our building contractor is guilty - let
him pay for the expenses!"

"Sink & Release": Big Push for "Diving Tourism" Along Edirne's Saros Gulf Coast

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 November 2025)

                      Divers will be well-protected!

Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer participated in the ongoing 2026 budget
discussions at the Provincial Assembly and briefed council members
on ongoing projects. Referring to the city's 2025 projects, Sezer
dedicated extensive space to the Gulf of Saros, which borders the
Keşan and Enez districts.

He noted that İbrice Harbor, located in the area where an M62 T tank
was sunk at the Underwater History Museum on June 3rd, has become
a center for diving tourism.  Governor Sezer announced that the
miniature city currently under construction, "Minia Edirne,"
((minature Edirne)) being built from stone, will be sunk at İbrice, too.

Governor Sezer explained that renovations are ongoing for İbrice Port,
saying, "İbrice comes to mind, especially when we talk about diving
tourism. We've received very positive feedback about everything done
in İbrice. We're talking about it as a diving tourism center, but it had
no restrooms, no running water, and no parking. We've created an area
for diving tourism centers. We need to standardize these so that visitors
can feel safe and receive good service. We've also organized the
parking areas. Regarding diving tourism, we have a "Minia Edirne"
project in the same area. We're planning to build a sunken city there,
hopefully next year."

Diving locations in the Gulf of Saros, featuring sunken ships,
airplanes, and tanks.

Governor Sezer, stating that they will be taking stricter measures
regarding the discharge of waste into the sea in the Gulf of Saros,
said, "We need to increase our measures at sea discharge points,
sewer systems, and other points. Our municipalities need to increase
their efforts there. We've launched a study, particularly regarding
the Lake Tuz location, and developed a project. This year, we will
continue with  stricter and more systematic measures to ensure that
the area is cleared of all garbage and regulated, making it a tourist
destination worthy of Edirne."

"Last year, we removed the trash. We collected the sinks (!) and
certain containers. We tidied up the parking areas. This year, we
will work to organize this area more systematically, with public
beaches and more human-friendly areas. Furthermore, as I
mentioned earlier, strict solutions and strict regulations will be
implemented, especially regarding the disposal of household
waste and its discharge into the sea. Let me emphasize this here,"
he said.

"Freeze & Release": Turkish Scientist Arrested and Jailed by ICE, Now Free on Bail in Chicago

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 November 2025)

                                  Uh, it's complicated...

Dr. Furkan Dölek, a Turkish scientist living in the US, discovered
radioactive risks threatening the health of researchers at Fermilab,
a laboratory affiliated with the US Department of Energy, in March
2024. He shared this information with US officials and publicized it
on social media.

Dölek, who works at prominent institutions such as CERN, Fermilab,
and Virginia Tech, shared his posts about the process that went viral
on social media.  Following this post, Dölek was fired from his job
in April 2024 and his visa was revoked. (!)

Dölek filed a lawsuit challenging the revocation of his academic
research visa. When his legal efforts failed, he was forced to reside
in the country without a visa for the past four months and began
a protest march to Canada.

                               The ICEmen cometh.

However (!), Dölek was arrested by ICE (US Immigration and
Customs Enforcement)  and was not heard from after August 27.
On September 4, following efforts by the Turkish Consulate General
in New York, it was revealed that Dölek was in the Buffalo Federal
Detention Center in New York.

Attorney Seyit Şahin, President of the Turkish-American National
Steering Committee (TASC), announced that Dr. Dölek has been
released pending trial on $50,000 bail.  Şahin stated that Dölek arrived
in Chicago with his lawyer after being released from prison in El Paso,
Texas (!), on the Mexican border.

In a joint statement, attorneys Michael Gökhan Kıran and Seyit Şahin,
who are volunteering on behalf of TASC, said, "Defending the rights
of the Turkish-American community is our responsibility. Dr. Furkan
Dölek's release is a natural consequence of this responsibility."

Dölek, whose bail was quickly raised under the leadership of TASC
and with the support of the Turkish American community, will reside
in Chicago during his trial without detention.

What a long, strange trip it's been...

The latest example of disregard for traffic rules comes from the
driver of a bus taking soccer fans of the Hesap.com Antalyaspor
team to a match with Tümosan Konyaspor.

A video taken on the bus and posted on social media shows
the bus driver dancing as the bus proceeds driverless (!) along
the highway, while boistrous passengers egged him on
with applause and laughter.

The scenes were erased from social media but not before an
investigation was initiated by authorities.  Each day there are
an average of 1,850 traffic accidents in Turkey and an average
of 7 related deaths.

Not to worry, the bus memorized the route.

There must be something easier to steal than sand.

Scenes of beaches plundered by sand thieves in Antalya's Manavgat
district were captured by Gendarmerie drones. Following the
heartbreaking scenes, which turned the beaches into sand pits, the
Gendarmerie began patrolling the area from land and air.

Manavgat District Gendarmerie Command Central Station teams
launched an operation against sand thieves in the Mendirek area the
night before, following a tip-off from residents. Construction
equipment and trucks found to be loading sand in the area were seized.

Not a low-profile heist.

The sand-laden trucks, which had noticed the gendarmerie teams and
attempted to flee after ignoring the "stop" warning, were apprehended
after a chase. Three people were detained in the operation, and efforts
are ongoing to apprehend two other suspects. As part of the
investigation, five trucks and three excavators believed to have been
used in the sand theft in the Ulualan area were towed to a parking lot.

Seydi İ., one of the suspects, was arrested at the courthouse and sent
to prison.

"Red Tape & Release": Young Turkish Girl Drowning in Bureaucratic Limbo, Rescued in Northern Cyprus

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 23 November 2025)

Perhaps (!) police time and effort would be better spent
elsewhere.

Born out of wedlock in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC), Fatoş has been unable to obtain either a TRNC or a Turkish
ID card for years. Arrested (!) for "being in the TRNC without
permission" when she turned 18, Fatoş's situation was resolved after
20 years thanks to the efforts of Turkish and TRNC authorities.

A version of Aziz Nesin's famous novel "Yaşar Ne Yaşar Ne Yaşamaz"
(Yaşar is Living in Limbo) has become a reality in the TRNC. Born 20
years ago in Girne (Kyrenia), Fatoş graduated from high school with
her only official document - her birth certificate. Despite repeated visits
to the relevant authorities, she was unable to obtain citizenship in either
Turkey, where her parents are citizens, or the TRNC. Upon turning 18,
she became an "illegal resident" because she was not a citizen and was
arrested for "being in the TRNC without a residence permit for 853 days."

Her lawyer, Beste Dal, rebelled against the bureaucracy, demanding to
know who would rescue Fatoş, who had been arrested for not having an
ID card and not being declared stateless. She cried, "To whom does this
young girl belong?"

According to information provided by lawyer Beste Dal, Fatoş was born
in Girne in 2005 as a result of an extramarital affair. Both her parents are
Turkish citizens. Fatoş was issued a birth certificate with her stepfather's
surname "Horuz." Her mother left the TRNC in 2008 when Fatoş was
3 years old because she did not have a work permit. In the intervening
years, her mother was unable to return to the TRNC because her
immigration fine had increased to 2,190,000 lira (about $52,000).

Fatoş cries, "Somebody Pass Me The Scissors, Please!!"

Because the mother's signature and presence were required for the
application for Turkish citizenship at the embassy, Fatoş couldn't even
proceed to the official application stage. Lacking her ID, she couldn't
travel to Turkey. Fatoş also tried to apply for citizenship in the TRNC,
the country of her birth and a country she'd never left. The mother's
application requirement again came up against her.

In the intervening years, Fatoş, cared for by her stepfather, graduated
from high school with her only birth certificate and reached the age
of 20.  Despite her lawyers' appeals, the TRNC Ministry of the Interior
did not declare Fatoş stateless (!). Had she had a statelessness certificate,
she would have been granted permanent residence in the TRNC.

Last week, Fatoş was arrested during routine police checks on the
grounds that she lacked identification and had resided illegally in the
TRNC for 853 days (the period after she turned 18). The judge ordered
her to remain in police custody until the bureaucratic issues were
resolved in her favor.

Fatoş's lawyer, after the judge's decision to impose an additional seven
days of detention, appeared before the press the day before, declaring,
"We knocked on every door in the bureaucracy; no one answered."
Finally, Turkish and TRNC authorities took the necessary steps to
resolve the 20-year-old problem.

TRNC Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz issued a statement regarding
Fatoş's tragedy, which sparked widespread local media attention,
emphasizing that although she lacked an ID card, she was a natural-
born citizen of the Republic of Turkey. In his second statement, Oğuz
announced the good news. He announced that the Turkish Embassy
had received the official application, consulted with lawyers, and
initiated the ID issuance process. Following the receipt of her ID card,
the TRNC Council of Ministers would grant Fatoş "exceptional
citizenship" at its first meeting.

"Harvest & Release": Saffron Rivaling Gold and Oil Prices, Warranting Gendarmerie Protection, in Çorum and Karabük

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Sözcü Newspaper, 12 November 2025)

A soldier's work is never done: "Other duties as assigned".

A flat can be purchased for 3 kilos of saffron: Soldiers have begun
guarding the fields around the clock.

The saffron harvest, synonymous with the Safranbolu district of
Karabük and sold for 600,000 lira (about $14,200) per kilo, is also
in full swing in Çorum. Farmers are keeping watch over their fields
day and night to protect their valuable crops, while gendarmerie
teams are keeping a close eye out for thieves.

Saffron, which has reached prices of up to 600,000 lira per kilogram
this season, can bring farmers considerable wealth if produced
efficiently. Çorum Governor Ali Çalgan visited saffron producers
in their fields and stated that production is the most important
factor in social development.

Flower Power

With the astronomical rise in the value of saffron, incidents of
field theft have increased, and farmers continue to guard their
saffron fields day and night to protect their valuable crop.

Gendarmerie teams are also on duty in the fields to ensure smooth
production and prevent untoward incidents, while night-vision
cameras are constantly monitoring the fields for security.

Farmers report that they harvest between 24 and 25 kilograms of
crop from an average-sized saffron field throughout the season.
They note that this year's saffron yield is higher than in previous
seasons, with a large portion of the crop sold abroad.
