In Esenyurt, Istanbul, last week two rival groups of taxi drivers
clashed, leaving three dead and four wounded. Police have now
determined that an organized crime gang was behind the dispute and
simultaneous raids were made in Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara. Gang
leader Ali Ziver Ç. and 18 of his minions, four of them taxi drivers,
were taken into custody.
The suspects were brought to court yesterday and more information
about the gang's Modus Operandi was disclosed: the gang prevented
other taxi drivers from picking up passengers in a particular area,
telling them "you can't get a fare here" and "you have to sell your
taxi plate to me" and "sell this taxi stand to us" (or else!).

In addition, the gang shot the manager of an apartment house in the
leg and seized control of the building (!) and beat a person in a car
they thought was a taxi interloper - he turned out to be waiting for
a friend.
