In Bodrum district of Muğla province, a body found in a sack turned
out to be that of Ümit Erol (50), who worked in the real estate and car
rental sectors. As the result of a debt problem, Erol was first
anesthetized, then shot with a revolver and finally burned to death.
Acid was poured on the body, as well, in an effort to completely
destroy it. Six people were taken into custody, one of them an
anesthesia technician. (!)
On the night of 28 June, citizens noticed a foul smell coming from a pile
of dirt alongside Ortakent University Avenue. Police arrived at the
scene between the Ortakent Dilekyolu intersection and the Fine Arts
Faculty building and found the sand-filled sack with a body in it
underneath the dirt pile.
Mercy killers hope for mercy: "We didn't want him to feel
any pain."
Police found no ID on the badly mutilated body of the mature male and
sent it to the police lab, where it was determined during an autopsy that
the death was the result of a murder (!). In the ensuing investigation,
police saw that Ümit Erol's older brother had filed a missing person
notice, saying that his brother, a realtor in Çiftlik village, had disappeared
on 20 June.
As a result, car rental manager H.T.A., his mother F.N.A. and anesthesia
technician B.A. (!), were taken into custody along with G.İ., E.D. and
A.T. All of them were jailed except A.T., who was released on judicial
supervision.
There had been a debt problem between Ümit Erol and the suspects, who
first had the anesthesia expert put Erol to sleep. Then he was shot with a
revolver and killed. Subsequently, the suspects tried to burn the body and
then poured acid on it, before taking the body 30 kilometers away from
Çiftlik village to Ortakent University Avenue, where it was buried in the
sack beneath the pile of dirt.
