Zehra Sorver (43), who lived in Alayköy, Lefkoşa (Nicosia) in
northern Cyprus, was the victim of a vicious murder last year.
After the murder, her husband Levent Sorver called police and
said that when he arrived home he found his wife dead. Police
arrived and determined that Zehra hanım had been strangled,
followed by hydrochloric acid being poured on her mouth and face.
Levent bey told police that his wife's jewelry was missing from the
house, positing that the murder had been the result of a robbery.
However, the couple's neighbors told police that the two fought
constantly and that Levent bey left home from time to time. This
prompted police to focus on Levent bey.
At this point, an interesting development occurred - the couple's
17-year-old son went to the police and told them that he had
killed his mother. However, forensics showed that the DNA under
Zehra hanım's fingernails and on her throat belonged to Levent bey.
After arguing with Zehra hanım for 8 minutes on the phone, Levent
bey had gone to the house, strangled Zehra hanım and then poured
hydrochloric acid on her mouth and face.
Levent bey was sentenced to 35 years in jail and his son Mehmet
got 14 months in jail for trying to cover up a crime to save his
father. Since Mehmet was 17 at the time of the murder, as a minor
his sentence would have been much lighter than the one his father
got, had Mehmet been convicted. (Hmmmmmmmmmmmm)
