Sunflower Seed Spitting Banned by Üsküdar & U.S. Baseball

//Ed. note: TNT visited Üsküdar a couple
of days ago. Lovely view, especially minus
sunflower seeds, but not a tree in sight - a
burning concrete shoreline desert.  How
about diverting some fine money to tree-
planting maybe.//

for the story of U.S. baseball banning sunflower
seed spitting.

Just like the bench in a baseball dugout.

The habit of sitting on benches along the shore, chewing sunflower
seeds and spitting the shells on the ground has been banned by the
Üsküdar municipality in Istanbul.  Mayor Hilmi Türkmen explained
that "this is a difficult but necessary decision for us.  From now on
chewing sunflower seeds from Harem to Küçüksu along the Üsküdar
coast is prohibited."

Violators of the sunflower seed chewing ban will be fined 61 TL
(about $9) and the money will go to a fund for handicapped citizens.
Zeki Azaklı, who runs a café across from the Kız Kulesi (a tiny
island that houses Leander's Tower) supported the ban, saying that
"our staff has to clean up the shells all the time and it's a burden for
them.  We don't sell shelled nuts.  We give people plastic bags to
put their own shells in but they generally just throw the shells on the
ground anyway."

However (!), a somewhat dissenting view came from Serkan Salihoğlu,
who said that "Everybody who sits by the shore enjoying the view
wants to chew sunflower seeds.  I don't think the ban is right. This
is a matter of pleasure.  Of course, we have to be mindful of the
environment and be more careful in that regard.  And using the
fine money for the handicapped is a good idea.  Our citizens surely
have to be aware of these things."

Mayor Türkmen told the press that "This decision wasn't made
overnight. We put a lot of thought and effort into it, getting input
from citizens over the course of two years.  The percentage of
people in favor of the ban was 92%.  The Salacak shore is one of
the world's nicest so shouldn't our people keep it that way?!"
