In the early morning hours yesterday, European kick-box champion
Berke Şahin (21) beat and then stabbed to death Ömer Özdemir (24),
whom Şahin accused of making improper remarks to his girlfriend.
The incident occurred in Kadıköy, Istanbul, where Şahin and his
girfriend attended a birthday party. As they left the party, two men
on a motorcycle came by them and made remarks to Şahin's girlfriend,
sparking a fight. Şahin beat the two men badly and they fled on their
motorcycle but Şahin mounted a friend's motorcycle and gave chase.
The late Özdemir was always upbeat.
One of the two harassers, Ömer Özdemir, got off the motorcycle and
tried to flee on foot. However, Şahin and a friend cornered Özdemir,
beat him thoroughly once again and then Şahin plunged a knife into
Özdemir. Şahin and his friend rode off as the wounded Özdemir
sought help in a nearby parking lot.
Özdemir died at a hospital and Şahin was taken into custody at another
hospital where he had gone for treatment of a wound in his hand he
sustained during the fight. The entire espisode was captured by
cameras in the area.
