A 14-meter catamaran named 'Atik Bey', flying the Turkish flag,
left Croatia's Trogir port on 25 August, first at 06:32 and then again
at 09:25 hours, headed towards nearby Split, from where the 'Atik
Bey' departed at 16:49 hours the same day. After leaving Split the
catamaran went to Croatia's Korcula Island and on 28 August its
destination was Budva in Montenegro.
Trogir is just SW of Split, at left center, Korcula in center and
Budva extreme right center.
The 'Atik Bey' left Budva at 17.03 hours on 30 August and its AIS
geopositioning system was shut down on 2 September at 17:41 hours
in the Adriatic Sea. The day before yesterday, Albanian fishermen
spotted the Turkish-flagged 'Atik Bey' drifting 12 miles off the coast
of Shengjin. When the Albanian Coast Guard boarded the catamaran
the motor was running but there was no one on board.
The passport of a Turk named Sezgin Yavuz was found on the 'Atik
Bey' and both the Turkish flag and the Galatasaray football team's
flag were flying from the mast. The catamaran was towed to
Shengjin, where police made a detailed examination of the boat. A
team from Tirana came to Shengjin and requested help from Interpol.
According to information in the Albanian press, police think the
'Atik Bey' may have been used for drugs or human trafficking. Sezgin
Yavuz's relatives living in Albania have made an application to
police to take possession of the catamaran.
Map shows Budva (red circle, left) in Montenegro, and
Shengjin on the Albanian coast, south of Shkoder.
