In the Toprak Kale quarter of Erzurum's Aziziye district,
tunnel workers found 3 catapult stones, each weighing
nears 1.5 tons (!). The stones are thought to have been
used by the Mongols in their assault on eastern Anatolia
in the 13th century.
Mongols defeated the Selçuks at Kösedağ, east of
Sivas.
Provincial Culture Director Cemal Almaz, Museum Director
Hüsnü Genç and Oğuzhan Türk, the Coordinator for the
Aziziye Municipality's Stone Works Museum went to the
scene of the discovery and their technical examination
all but confirmed that the stones remained from the Mongol
period.
