Harmless Byzantine prank or a harbinger of things
to come?...
Communications Minister Fahrettin Altun sent a note of objection to the
American TV channel CBS, which showed a map of Greece and Turkey,
with Istanbul depicted as part of Greece (!). In response, CBS
apologized for the mistake and promised that it would not happen again.
The CBS report concerned the passage of Russian warships through the
Turkish straits. In the apology, the CBS managing editor stated that "The
graphic showing Istanbul as part of Greece, rather than Turkey, was
corrected as soon as it was brought to our attention. We remain faithful
to providing accurate information in all our news programs and we have
reviewed our procedures to ensure that a mistake like this never happens
again. I am grateful that you contacted us and have given CBS News
the opportunity to apologize to you."
