Serious violation of snowball fight rules of engagement.
The night before last in Tophane Park in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, 9 people
were engaged in a friendly snowball fight. However (!), one of the
snowballs hit passer-by F.B. (26) in his head. An argument ensued,
with F.B. leaving to relate this event to his kin at home.
Subsequently, F.B. and brothers M.B. (40) and E.B. (35), along with
some others, returned to the scene of the snowball fight, where a
fight erupted. E.B.fired his gun and hit F.B.G., S.S., N.Ü., İ.D.S.,
M.F.İ., E.Ü. and E.S., who were all taken to a hospital for treatment
of their wounds.
Police arrived and took E.B. into custody, while his brothers F.B.
and M.B. were caught near the Galata Bridge and an unlicensed gun
and 9 bullets were seized from them. In his statement to police,
F. B. explained that "as I was walking past the park I got hit in the
head with a snowball. I went home and told my father what happened.
I then went back to the park with my brothers and the incident occurred."
Yahya Üzümcü, whose 17-year-old son was injured in the fight, said
that "I was having a playful snowball fight with my kids (evidently
N.Ü. and E. Ü.) when a group of 6-7 guys came with sticks in their
hands cursing. They talked among themselves and said 'we'll be
back!'. Later, they came with sticks and suddenly attacked us. One of
them took out a gun and fired wildly into our group. My son was hit
in the chest."
On 17 February 2015 in Kadıköy, Istanbul, journalist Nuh Köklü was
having a snowball fight with his friends when one of the snowballs hit
a store window. Shopowner Serkan Azizoğlu was none too pleased by
this and emerged from his shop with a knife, stabbing Köklü in his chest
and killing him. Azizoğlu was tried for "intentional murder" and
sentenced to life in prison.
