TNT History Mini-Series: Selahattin's Diary (1933-1934)/Part XI

//Ed. Note: In March 1934, Selahattin was
busy with his medical school courses, billiards
the Temperance Society, movies, novels and
sightseeing around Istanbul.

During the month's first 10 days,  Selahattin's
hopes of a letter from Cemile were crushed and
he did not mention her again for the rest of
the month.//

Thursday, 1 March 1934
The weather is improving.  Besides language class, with
the addition of zoology and morphology, our free days are
very few.  The Directorate had put the coffee house off
limits and a circular was distributed saying that we can’t
go outside other than on Fridays.  While walking around
Fatih in the evening, I saw that Şemsi had not been
successful and had, in fact, been rejected.   And I still
haven’t got a response to the letter I sent.  I’m so angry
with her, I’ll become a complete women-hater.

Friday, 2 March 1934
The weather is very nice and I walked around quite a bit
in the afternoon.  Namık and Tevfik came but when they
couldn’t find us they went back.

Saturday, 3 March 1934
I still have no word from her.  At 7 o’clock Şemsi fooled
me by saying that a letter had come from her.  Those
45 minutes of joy turned into distress when I realized it
was a lie.  It’s been a week since I wrote to her.  In any
case, any response that comes at this point will not be
pleasing to me.  The excitement I felt today made me
realize that love is endless.  Nevertheless, it must be
that the heartache of innocent love is its grave and the
one thing I’m sure of is that buried love is the first and
the last.  If only Cemile could understand the reality of
this pain, how happy I would be.

Monday, 5 March 1934
I transferred from French B to German A.  I went to the
faculty to listen to the speech of the Minister of
Education but when I couldn’t get it I returned.  I read
that journalist Reşit Galip Bey passed away.  Too bad.
Turkey has lost another learned man.  I got a letter from
my brother-in-law.

Tuesday, 6 March 1934
I have still not received any word from her and have
begun to lose all hope again.  In the evening I wrote a
letter to my parents.

Thursday, 8 March 1934
At noon, I went to the Milli Cinema with Tevfik and
we saw “Volga Volga” and “Hayatım Sana Feda”.
Both of them were very good.  In the evening when I
came to the school I saw there were 3 letters in my
draw – from my father, from Reşad and from Kemal.
But I didn’t get the one letter I wanted most. This
means that all hope is gone.

Friday, 9 March 1934
In the afternoon 15 of us went to Yenikapı for a boat
ride and we took photos, too.  The weather was fine
and we had a good time.  Then, we ran into Namık
on the road and walked around with him for a
couple of hours.  Today for the first time Tevfik,
Şemsi, Namık and I were able to tour Istanbul together.

Saturday, 10 March 1934
I got 7 liras my father sent me.  In the afternoon,
we ran into the physics teacher in Eminönü and
chatted a bit with him.  I finished the letter to Reşad
and mailed it.

Sunday, 11 March 1934
I wrote letters to my brother-in-law and my parents
and mailed them.  The weather was so nice we had to
go back to Yenikapı for another boat ride.

Monday, 12 March 1934
Şemsi and I went to see Namık in the afternoon. Then
we all went to Beşiktaş’s upper side.  We went quite
high up.  I think it was the most pleasant day I’ve had.

Tuesday, 13 March 1934
We began our first chemistry exercise.  The class
is very nice. If I did the exercise correctly, I
produced two worthwhile mercury samples from
the contents of bottles 31 and 65.

Friday, 16 March 1934
Yesterday and today I paid 97.5 kuruş for billiards.  I
counted up the cost.  It’s been a month since I started
playing billiards.  I’ve paid a total of 2.5 liras.  Today
I’m making a vow not to play billiards for a month
or two.  I got an invitation to the Temperance Society
annual congress to be held next week.  I wrote a letter
to my nephew.  I sent the “Letaif-i Külliyatı” I bought.

Monday, 19 March 1934
I had my first zoology exercise.  After  30 minutes
of explanations, we went to the lab where there were
mackerel fish in basins.  We opened the back of the
fish after injecting it with a needle.  Then we opened its
head and drew three pictures in the course of the
exercise.

Tuesday, 20 March 1934
I had my second chemistry exercise.  I got a 65 ‘sm’
from my first one.  Today we got experience with the
third and fourth groups of canyons.  This time we did
3 trials.  In two of them  I got ‘AP’ and in one I got
‘Zm’.  I wonder if I got them right?

Wednesday, 21 March 1934
I wrote letters to my parents and to Sabri and I sent
holiday greetings to  Cemal, my nephew, my brother-in-
law,  my little nieces and nephews, my parents and my
older sister.

This evening after dinner I saw that our dorm has
been penalized for some things, which made me feel
badly.  In fact, the penalties are justified but since
Hasib Bey penalized only 5-6 people and looked the
other way on others, he was very unjust.  I wonder if I
will ever have days when I witness justice.

Thursday, 22 March 1934
I went to the cinema in the afternoon and saw “Yirmi Bin
Sene Gören Mahkumları” and “... Milton”.  In the
evening when I came to the school I read a card that
Suavi had sent to the four of us who graduated from
Sivas High School.  I was surprised he remembered us.

Friday, 23 March 1934
At nine thirty in the morning, I went to the Temperance
Society meeting and the chief, Fazleddin Kerim Bey,
opened the meeting at ten minutes after ten.  First, the
national anthem was played and then, with just a piano
and violin, our society’s march was played, along with
some European pieces.  This was followed by the
chief’s stirring speech and then General Secretary
Vecihi’s and the Treasurer’s remarks about the
collective work that will enlighten us.  There was an
election, too.  On my way back to school I ran into
Namık, who’s going to Romania tomorrow so we
exchanged farewells.  When I reached the school I
got some things that Reşad had sent.  I mailed
congratulatory notes to Sivas.  In the afternoon Şemsi
and I went for a walk toward Edirne Kapı.

Saturday, 24 March 1934
I received 5 liras from my father.  Yet it’s been 16 days
since I got a letter.  I’d rather get a letter.  I sent
congratulatory notes to those in Ankara.

Sunday, 25 March 1934
We went to language class in the evening but since the
teacher didn’t show up we came back.  A 5-day school
break is starting.  Let’s see what fun I can have.  I started
to read “Dudaktan Kalbe” again.

Monday, 26 March 1934
I finished “Dudaktan Kalbe”.  These lines were very
significant: “On a summer night with a full moon, with
the sound of a violin in the distance, this love of a
young girl was as sweet as it was five years before.”

On the first day of the holiday, Şemsi and I went to
see “Sefileri” at the Saray Cinema.

Tuesday, 27 March 1934

We went to Kadıköy in the morning.  But we couldn’t
find Habib Bey’s house so we came back.  In the
evening we went to the Millet Theater and sat in the
loge for 25 kuruş.

Wednesday, 28 March 1934
The weather was bad.  I stayed in the coffee house
until evening, when we went to Ferah, where
“Genç Kızlar Kulübü” and “Şehir Işıklar” were playing.

Thursday, 29 March 1934
Tevfik, Şemsi and I toured around until evening and
went around and through Gülhane Park for the first time.
This big park, with the birds singing, puts a person in
ecstasy.  In the afternoon we went to see Hamdi.

Friday, 30 March 1934
I stayed at the coffee house until noon.  I wrote a letter
to my parents in the dorm in the afternoon.

Saturday, 31 March 1934

With a group of friends, I went to Eyüp via Edirne Kapı.
We boarded rowboats and went over to Kağıthane, where
the mansions that the previous residents built with money
they worked so hard to make are now in ruins.  The pool
that represented many memories, which Nedim
explained, is still there.  There were some nice places.
We took some photos with all the fellows amid the
greenery that was all around.
