Police add a touch of pepper to spice up the mussels.
Police in İzmit received a tip about illegal mussel
gathering in the Gulf of Izmit at the 'Kuş Cenneti' (bird
sanctuary). Arriving at the scene, police ordered the
mussel hunters, who were wearing diving gear (!), get
out of the water.
Seeing is believing. (sigh...)
The hunters tried to swim away from the police, who
blasted them with pepper spray from a bridge overhead to
prevent their escape. After a 1-hour chase, the 7 hunters
were arrested and each was fined 1,322 TL (about $250).
