The chivalrous Çakmak, rebuffed by a damsel in distress,
being set upon by by her pack of louts.
In Beyoğlu, Istanbul, nightclub manager Burhan Işık and his girlfriend
Damla B. were walking toward their car in the early morning hours
when an argument erupted between them. Seeing Işık hit Damla B.,
passer-by Emrah Çakmak (29) intervened, telling Işık to leave the
woman alone.
In response, Işık punched Çakmak and a tussle ensued. Damla B.
took Işık's side in the fracas, declaring that "He's my boyfriend!
What's it to you?!", and began to hit Çakmak, too. Then, Damla B.
summoned two of her friends to join the fight and they attacked
Çakmak, who at this point was trying to flee, with a screwdriver
and a curb stone.
Çakmak died as the result of 7 stab wounds from the screwdriver
and the blows to his head from the curb stone. Police reviewed
street surveillance video of the incident and arrested Işık, Damla B.,
screwdriver assailant Ercüment Ş. (41) and Tayfur Ş. (30), who hit
Çakmak in the head with a 30-kilogram curb stone. The three men,
who all have police records, were arrested, as was Damla B.
Istanbul's Beyoğlu district.
