One hundred 35-year-old walnut trees belonging to Abuzer Alkan (74)
were cut down at their bases with an ax. Alkan, who lives in Çelikhan
district of Adıyaman province, came to his orchard near Çelikhan State
Hospital when neighbors summoned him.
Alkan had nurtured the trees under difficult circumstances and he
touched each one of them amid great sorrow. He stated that "I have
been working this orchard for 35 years, taking water from the nearby
stream in a can to raise these trees. How could such cruel, fiendish
people massacre them in this way? They have ruined me. I don't
know what I will do." His son Abdurrahman Alkan said that "What
will God do to those who have harmed us like this? We consign their
fate to God. They have committed a massacre. We want the
perpetrators to be found.
Police are trying to identify and capture the culprits.
