"Beat & Release": Jewel Robbers "Eagle & Lion", Wearing Salvador Dali Masks, Bungle Heist, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 31 August 2023)

                           It's not even Halloween yet!

In Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul, jeweler E.B was getting ready to
open his store at 9 o'clock on the morning of 23 August when he noticed
two robbers wearing Salvador Dali masks, like those worn in the Spanish
TV series "La Casa De Papel".  The masked robbers tried to force open
the store's locked door, but without success.  Next, they fired shots at the
glass in the door but it was bulletproof (!) so they were stranded outside
the store.

Jeweler E.B. sounded the alarm and the robbers fled in the vehicle they
came in.  Police looked at camera footage and determined that the
license plate on the robbers' vehicle was stolen.  They were, however,
able to learn that the vehicle belonged to one F.A., who had lent the car
to his nephew Birkan Kartal (whose surname means "eagle") (31).

                         The resemblance is uncanny.

Police tracked down and arrested Kartal, who confessed that Mahmut
Aslan (whose surname means "lion") (25) had joined him in the
robbery attempt.  Aslan was also taken into custody and police found
an unlicensed revolver and three Salvidor Dali masks in a search of the
suspects, who were both jailed.

In the Kışla neighborhood of Adana's Yüreğir district yesterday at about
6 o'clock in the evening, the Yalçınkaya family began bar-b-queing.
Unfortunately (!), an argument erupted among family members and son
Burak, said to be a drug addict, pulled a revolver from his belt, shooting
his older brother Hüseyin, mother Hacer, sister-in-law Esra, his niece
Elif and nephew Yağmur.

Burak then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.  Hüseyin
was pronounced dead at a hospital and all the others, including Burak,
remain in serious condition.

"Beat & Release": Helps to Have an Accidental Dad in High Places, in Karabük

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 30 August 2023)

must-see video:

https://karabukpostasi.com/iki-kisinin-oldugu-feci-kaza-ani-kamerada/

                             Upside-down road-rage justice.

Last year in Karabük on 30 June, Ali Emre Gürel (21), the son of Fuat
Gürel, who was the governor of Karabük province at that time, crashed
into a car driven by Salih Portakal, who entered a roundabout en route
to Safranbolu.   Both Portakal (71) and his wife Behiye (69) were killed
in the accident, while Gürel and his friend Bedrihan Erdoğan (!) (20)
were injured.

Gürel was taken into custody after hospital treatment and jailed, but his
lawyer was able to have him released from prison after only 37 days.
A case was opened against Gürel for "causing the deaths of more than
one individual through negligence." and a sentence of up to 15 years
requested by the public prosecutor.

However (!), the "expert witness" report about the accident found that
Portakal was more at fault than Gürel in the accident.  The video of
the crash was finally released to the public after Gürel's father, the then-
governor, was reassigned to a position in Ankara (!).  At the end of his
trial Gürel was sentenced to 3 years and six months in prison.  However,
this sentence was reduced to 2 years and 11 months because "the court
took into consideration the suspect's past, his behavior during the course
of the trial and the impact the penalty would have on the suspect's future."
The court also lifted judicial supervision conditions that had been applied
to Gürel.

(Incredibly!) Portakal's son Erdem Portakal was ordered to pay 174,258
TL (about $6,500) for repairs to Gürel's car.

The flat's owner recorded the "visit" on a cellphone.

The monkey's owners came and retrieved the animal.  Three people
attacked by the creature were treated at the scene and then transported

"Beat & Release": Lawyer "Forgot" He'd Put Drugs in Napkin Given to His Sweaty Jailed Client, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 August 2023)

His law practice's slogan: "No good deed goes unpunished"

In Beykoz, Istanbul, Salim Emre Hocaoğlu killed his renter and injured
two other people so he was sentenced to 23 years and 7 months in jail.
Last Tuesday, Hocaoğlu had a meeting at the Maltepe L-type Prison with
his lawyer Hüseyin Sever.  In the course of their chat, Sever passed a
napkin to his client and this caught the attention of the guards. So after
the lawyer-client chat, Hocaoğlu was searched and the guards found
illegal drugs in the napkin he took from Sever. (!)

Sever was taken into custody at the prison gate.  He explained that:
"I'm having family problems so I got some drugs from a person I know
in Tarlabaşı (Istanbul neighborhood famous for drug dealing).  I'd
forgotten that I'd wrapped the drugs in a napkin that I put in my pants
pocket.  When I saw my client perspiring during our conversation I
offered him the napkin to wipe his forehead." (!)

When Sever was brought from the prison to a courthouse for processing
he repeated this explanation.  The judge, though, didn't buy it and ordered
that Sever be arrested for drug dealing.

                             Napkin shortage under review.

"Beat & Release": Woman, Badly Hurt in Crash of Racing Cars, Held Partially at Fault as a Passenger (!), in Mersin

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 August 2023)

"Should I have jumped from the speeding car?!"

Yaren Gürbüz (25) was living in America when, at the beginning of 2021,
she came to visit her family in Mersin.  The COVID pandemic restrictions
at that time prevented her from returning to the USA. As a result, on
12 March she was involved in a traffic accident that would end her fairy
tale life.

That day, Yaren hanım went out driving with her friend Emir Kuytul,
who began racing with another car but crashed into a TIR (tractor-trailer)
making an illegal U-turn.   As a result of the crash, Yaren hanım's nose,
jaw, teeth, hip, knee, thigh bone, right heel, spine and shoulder blade
were broken. (!)  After two months of treatment, Yaren hanım lost the use
of an eye, as well.  Bones from her chest were used to repair her nose.

Since she has had to remain in Turkey all this time, Yaren hanım's U.S.
"green card" has been canceled.  As she continues with her medical
treatment, Yaren hanım filed a compensation case in Istanbul, including
a doctor's report verifying that she is now 85% disabled, demanding
1 million TL (about $3.6) in material damages and 150,000 TL (about
$5,600) in psychological damages from the three drivers who were
involved and their insurance companies.

                                    The Three Stooges

An "expert witness" report was submitted to the court by academics
from the Istanbul Technical University's Engineering Faculty.  The
report's findings cited TIR driver İsa Ataman as being 50% at fault
in the accident for making an illegal U-turn and drivers Emir Kuytul
and Alparslan Bayundur each bearing 25% responsibility for the
crash because they were racing.

Additionally, according to the report, Yaren hanım shared 20% of
Kuytul's fault because she was a passenger in one of the racing cars
and put her own life in danger by choosing to be in the car (!).
Her lawyer Mecit Kahraman has refused to accept this 20% fault
attributed to Yaren hanım and has demanded another "expert witness"
report from another committee.

In response to the "expert witness" report, Yaren hanım lamented:
"How can I be held to be at fault for being a passenger in the car?!
Should I have jumped from the speeding car?! Would they ("expert
witness" committee) have been happy then?!  I have no memory of
the incident but the report confirmed that they were racing with each
other.  And because of their recklessness, they put my life in danger.
They stole my life from me.  I'm still getting treatment and undergoing
operations.  I cannot work.  They must be punished for this so they
don't put the lives of others in danger and they must be made to pay
compensation."

"Torture & Release": All in the Family - Teenager "Disciplined" by Dad, Uncle and Brother, in Şanlıurfa

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 25 August 2023)

"Spare the rod, spoil the child!"

The day before yesterday in Mürşitpınar village in Şanlıurfa's Suruç
district, M. Ş. (15) was chained around his neck, hands and feet by his
father İzzet Ş., uncle (father's brother) Mahmut Ş. and his older brother
Ali Ş. and tortured in a stable from 2 o'clock in the afternoon until
11 o'clock that night (!).

The "reason" for the torture was that İzzet Ş. was having a dispute
with his estranged wife's brother and wanted M.Ş. to shoot him.
However, M.Ş. refused this assignment, fled to Nizip, where he stayed
in a hotel for 3 days, and then went to Birecik, where his family caught
up with him.

M.Ş. explained afterwards that "they bound me in a stable using chains
that are meant for the animals and tortured me from 1400 until 2300.
Then they told me 'you won't tell anyone about this!'".  M.Ş. said that
his three torturers also urinated on him (!) and took a video, which they
sent to his mother, whose sister ultimately came to rescue M.Ş.

İzzet Ş. and Mahmut Ş. were jailed and M.Ş.'s older brother Ali Ş.
was released on judicial supervision (!).

"Beat & Release": Surgeon Killed by Pimp Over $4 Price Differential for Hotel Liason with Uzbek Woman, in Avcılar

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 24 August 2023)

"A man's been shot! Someone call a doctor! Uh...."

Last Tuesday evening, M.S.A., the desk clerk at the Pablo Suit Hotel in
Avcılar, Istanbul, called the police, saying that someone in room 206 had
been shot.  The victim was Dr. İbrahim Karahan (55), a general surgeon
at a private hospital, who suffered a gunshot to his midsection and died.

In his statement to police, M.S.A. explained that "an individual came to the
hotel and told me that a woman was being beaten in room 206."  M.S.A.
added that he and this individual entered room 206 and the individual
opened fire on a man ((Dr. Karahan)) in the room, before fleeing with the
woman there.

Formerly operated under the name "No-Tell Motel"

Police identified the woman as Dilnoza Bayramova (31) from Uzbekistan.
Dr. Karahan had booked the hotel room using another name and the
women came to the room after him.  The killer was identified by police
as Ali Asker Kıtay (26).  Both Bayramova and Kıtay were taken into
custody.

Evidently, Dr. Karahan and Bayramova argued over the price of their
sexual encounter, with Bayrmaova demanding 1,500 TL ($55) and the
doctor offering her 1,400 TL ($51.50) (!).  In her statement, Bayramova
explained that "Two months ago I met Ali Asker on Instagram and I
became his girlfriend.  He left me at the hotel.  When I entered the
hotel room I argued with the man there about the price. He offered me
too little and began to beat me when I insisted on my price.  So I
called Ali Asker, who was waiting for me below, for help."

"Beat & Release": Rappers Wrapped Up for Singing Songs for Crime Gangs, in Istanbul

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 19 August 2023)

                      What would Tupac say?...or sing?

Yesterday, police in Istanbul's anti-organized crime unit arrested rappers
who allegedly wrote and sang songs as requested by organized crime
gangs (!).  Among those arrested were Doğan Tarda, known by his
rapper name "Heijan", Şamet Işık, known as "BIG" and Şahan Terzioğlu,
known as "CAC".  Muhammet Nedim Doğan, known as "Muti", was
not at his address when the police raid occurred and remains at large.

The rappers were charged with "inciting hatred and enmity among the
populace" and "praising crime and criminals".  The charges reflected
the claim that the rappers put songs on social media and in the music
sector on behalf of criminal organizations and that these songs, shared
widely among the gang members, became symbols of the particular
organized crime gangs.

Another rapper known as "Aynen" was taken into custody for using a
fake gun in a song clip.  In the raids, police seized fake Kalashnikov
and Uzi guns, as well as a revolver, that were used in clips.  It is
alleged that the rappers made a song for Barış Boyun's "Death Gang"
organized crime gang.  Boyun was captured by Interpol in Italy.

telephone call on 3 August from a person identifying himself as a
policeman.  The caller explained that an anti-terror operation was
underway and the bad guys were using Ali A.N.'s identity and
bank accounts.  Therefore, until the end of the operation, Ali A.N.
was told to give up any gold and cash in his home.  (!)

Ali A.N. was assured that he would get the gold and cash back but
if he failed to comply he would be taken into police custody.  Rattled,
Ali A.N. put 5 kilograms of gold (worth about $360,000!) into a pouch

"You may have already won a free flight to Diyarbakır!
But send money for food and beverages."

Police in Diyarbakır learned two months ago about a gang hoodwinking
citizens by telephone and identified three Africans who were directing
the gang's operations.  When police determined that the suspects were
all in Istanbul they went there and tracked down the "Vuvuzela Gang."

The gang's modus operandi was to call people and pretend that the
caller was an American soldier in Syria who came upon $1 million
and needed to smuggle the money into Turkey.  The gang's targets
were told that they would get half of the money but that they must
first send the caller money for customs and courier expenses.  The
seduced targets sent this money to an account number given to them
by the caller.

Vuvuzela Gang members, when not hoodwinking.

However (!), after sending the money those duped could not reach the
caller and the gang withdrew the money sent at ATMs. The day before
yesterday, Diyarbakır and Istanbul police launched "Operation Safari"

Searches revealed a large number of telephones and telephone lines,
foreign exchange and a pump-action rifle.  The 12 arrested suspects

Can't stay in jail and can't stay outta trouble either.

In an incident known as the "2. Şule Çet" case in Küçükçekmece,
Istanbul, Ebru Erdem (17) "fell" from the 9th floor of a building to her
death on 20 March 2019.  Police determined that Serdar Taş was with
Ebru hanım at the time so he was taken into custody, along with Kemal
Sönmez, who rented the flat to Taş.

Taş was tried in connection with Ebru hanım's death and the public

"Beat & Release": Women Use "Tantanacılık" Distraction to Rob Vet Clinic and Vet's Lunch (!), in Kadıköy

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 13 August 2023)

Best meal they've had in days - pet food and Zanna's lunch.

In Kadıköy, Istanbul, Zanna Bessonova, working in a veterinarian clinic,
was victimized by a group of six women who entered the clinic and
intentionally caused a ruckus among themselves as a distraction to steal.
The trick, known as "tantanacılık", was successful because while
Sessonova went to a carpet dealer close by for help, the women stole
70,000 TL, some pet food, clinic items and even Bessanova's lunch (!).

The incident began  the day before yesterday in Kadıköy, at about 1
o'clock in the afternoon when the women and their children entered a
number of stores with theft in mind.  The shopowners, wise to the trick,
expelled the women and children but they then targeted the Katina
veterinarian clinic where Bessanova (42) was working.  As the women
created a chaotic atmosphere, the bewildered Bessanova sought help
from a neighboring carpet dealer.  While she was away from the clinic
for a minute or two, though, the women stole 70,000 TL (about $2,500),
10,000 TL worth of pet food and other items, as well as Bessanova's
lunch (!!).

Bessanova stated that "at about one-thirty, six women and their children
came.  They had 200 TL and asked about the prices of various items. I
was bewildered by them so I called the carpet dealer next door but his
phone was busy.  So I went to his shop but when I returned I found that
our cash was gone and our products missing.  They even took my lunch!"

Gizem Canbay (38), the clinic owner, said that "I went on an errand for
about ten minutes and was in shock when I returned, seeing that the
70,000 TL was gone.  We were going to use that money a half hour later
to make a payment.  I called the police and the women can be seen on
camera footage.  It's ridiculous that such a brazen thing could happen in
Kadıköy in broad daylight!"

"Beat & Release": Armenian's Excommunication Playing Out in Turkish Courts, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 12 August 2023)

                     Seems to be badly outnumbered.

Levon Gagaçyan, a member of the Armenian community in Turkey, has
been excommunicated by Patriarchate's Spiritual Council because of
messages Gagaçyan posted on social media about the Patriarchate. In
addition, Patriarch Şahak Maşlayan and Spiritual Council President
İsahak Bıçıkçı have petitioned the public prosecutor to put Gagaçyan
on trial for insulting them.

In response, after reviewing Gagaçyan's social media verbal and written
messages, the Bakırköy public prosecutor opened a case against him,
requesting a jail sentence of 2 years and 4 months.   Responding,
Gagaçyan asserted that "I have in no way acted in a way that would
demean the prestige of the Armenians in Turkey.  Without any right to
appeal, I've been excommunicated.  I felt badly about this so I posted
a critical message on my Facebook account."

After he was excommunicated, Gagaçyan appealed to the Turkish
Presidential Communications Center (CİMER), asserting that "If me or
my property suffer any harm then 3 people in the Patriarchate are
responsible."  CİMER's response to him was that he could file a petition
with the Istanbul public prosecutor if he so desired (i.e. "take two aspirins
and call me in the morning").

In any case, Gagaçyan did file a criminal complaint with the Istanbul
public prosecutor, claiming that his "freedom of religious belief" has
been impeded.  In addition, Gagaçyan filed a criminal complaint against
Deputy Patriarch Şirvan Mürzyan for posting an insulting message about
him on social media regarding his excommunication.

"Beat & Release": Mom the Avenger and Chain-reaction Familial Vengeance, in Serinhisar

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 11 August 2023)

                                   Revenge is complicated.

Kemal Akköse (25), who worked at a roasted chickpeas processing plant
in Denizli's Serinhisar district, left his house on Ortaokul Street in the
Aşağı neighborhood at 7 o'clock in the morning yesterday to go to work.
But no sooner did Akköse get into his parked car than a masked attacker
fired 4 shots from a hunting rifle at Akköse and fled.

Arriving at the scene, police saw that Akköse had died from gunshots to
his head and chest.   They also determined that Akköse was the brother
of Mustafa Akköse, who on 6 June last year shot dead his distant relative
Hasan Akköse and İsmail Yalçın, burned their bodies with gasoline,
dumped the bodies in a well and covered them with rocks and dirt (!).

Denizli police discovered that Hasan Akköse's mother A.K. had posted
a vengeance message on social media at 11 o'clock the night before last,
8 hours prior to Kemal Akköse's murder, with a picture of Hasan Akköse
and these words: "Söz intikamını alcam kuzum" (I'll avenge you as I
promised, my lamb!)   Police arrested Y.A., A.K.'s divorced husband and

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 10 August 2023)

                                     Poison honey.

Murat Arpapay (57) lived in Istanbul but he was born in England and
spent his youth there, coming to Turkey in the mid-1990s to live in his
family's home in Istanbul's Bahçelievler district.  His family in England
regularly sent him money for his expenses and he had a comfortable life.

Arpapay frequented the café owned by Ersen Başak, who, when Arpapay
told him about the money he received from his family, hatched a heinous
plan.  Başak enlisted "escort girls" Muhterem Perçikli (19) and Serpil
Demir into his plan and had them flirt with Arpapay in the café.  Arpapay
took the bait and on the night of 26 July, he and Muhterem hanınm went
to a flat in Şirinevler.

However (!), waiting at the flat were Başak and his goons.  They
handcuffed Arpapay, beat him and knocked him senseless with ether.
Then they injected chemicals into his blood stream, killing him.
Meanwhile, Başak went to Arpapay's home and stole all his money.
Lastly, Arpapay's body was thrown down an empty shaft in the building
where he met with Muhterem hanım.

Responding to a report of a dead body, police came to the scene the next
morning and noticed that there were none of the usual signs of murder,
like stab or gunshot wounds.  Arpapay's body was taken to the police
forensic lab where it was determined that some substance had been
injected into him.  A review of camera footage led police to identify
Başak, Doğan Sarıyıldız, Fatih Erginoğlu, along with Muhterem hanım
and Serpil hanım, as murder suspects.

Police learned that Muhterem hanım ran away from her family in Mersin
two years ago.  Her mother Telime Karaca appeared on a TV program,
saying that her daughter had gotten involved with drugs and was
kidnapped.  After the program was aired, Muhterem hanım called her
mother and returned home.

Başak fled to Georgia and Sarıyıldız and Erginoğlu went to northern
Cyprus.  The two women were jailed and an Interpol "red bulletin" has
been issued with regard to the other three suspects.
