"Beat & Release": What's in a Name? - "Gunpowder" Explodes and Stabs Wife to Death, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 30 March 2023)

Didn't take much to light his fuse.

In Kâğıthane, Istanbul, Şener (28) and Sultan (27) Barut (whose surname
means "gunpowder" !) married nine years ago and had two children
together.  Sultan hanım, though, left to live separately because of abuse
at the hands of Şener bey.  On 14 January, Şener bey stabbed his wife to
death and turned himself into the police.

In his statement, Şener bey explained that "my wife was conversing with
a person name Şahin she met on social media.  I wanted to make up with
her so first I went to a shopping center and bought some toys for my
children.  While in the store I noticed a knife and I bought it to scare my
wife if it turned out that she was reluctant to get back together with me. (!)
I went to the house with the intention of making up, but instead, she
insulted me.  To scare her I pressed the knife to her chest.  I didn't intend
to put so much pressure on the stab but I lost control and what happened
happened.  I didn't want to kill her, just scare her." (!)

However, in the related indictment, the Istanbul public prosecutor stated
that by buying the knife Şener bey showed intent to murder and so he
should get life in prison.  The prosecutor dismissed Şener bey's claim
that Sultan hanım had cheated on him as just an excuse to avoid his
penalty.

"Beat & Release": She Left 15 Stray Dogs in Rented House as "Farewell Gift" to Landlord, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 29 March 2023)

One of the 15 new "renters", lower left, living rent-free!

According to a court case in Istanbul, lawyer Murat Cemal Dayıoğlu
gave his house in Zekeriyaköy for rent to Elif Çiğdem Ç. in 2015.
Over the past year and a half Elif Çiğdem hanım paid her rent only
sporadically, prompting Dayıoğlu to start eviction proceedings.  Elif
Çiğdem hanım was given 15 days to vacate the premises but left after
two months.  Irritated by the whole process, she left 15 stray dogs in
the house without informing Dayıoğlu. (!)

In response, Dayıoğlu filed a complaint about Elif Çiğdem hanım and
had an expert determine that there had been 41,000 TL worth of damage
in the house (about $2,100) and that it cost him 120,000 TL (about $6,000)
to have the house restored to liveable condition.

As for Elif Çiğdem hanım, she asserted that "landlord Dayıoğlu
continually harassed me and called my neighbors and my lawyer,
inflicting emotional stress on me."  Nevertheless, the public prosecutor
has opened a case against Elif Çiğdem hanım for "damage to property",
asking for a jail sentence of up to 3 years.

"Beat & Release": Spectacular Bosphorus Marriage Proposal with Deceptive Half-price Discount

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 28 March 2023)

"Here's to a lifetime together" - whoops! just 3 days...
(at half price).

In Beşiktaş, Istanbul, a young man named Uğur K. got in touch with an
events company by means of social media with regard to organizing an
event whereby he would propose marriage to his girlfriend K.Ç., whom
he identified as "Buse" (!).   The company put together a package for
Uğur K. costing 6,000 TL (about $300) and he paid 3,000 TL in advance.

The couple parked their car at Bebek on the Bosphorus shore, boarded
a yacht and had the company write their names with laser lights on the
15 July Martyrs' Bridge.  The yacht went out into the Bosphorus
and after the couple had dinner by candlelight, Uğur K. proposed to
K. Ç., a.k.a "Buse (!), on the bow of the craft.  "Buse" accepted and the
two danced and took pictures and videos.

As the happy evening concluded back at the shore, the company asked
for the remaining 3,000 TL.  Uğur K. claimed that his wallet was in his
car so he said he'd come right back with the money.  But he disappeared.
Yacht owner Nusret Can Kazancı stated that "we asked for the money
at the end of the tour but he said he'd left his wallet in his car.  Then he
told us that someone had broken into his car and stolen his wallet. (!)
He promised to pay us the next day.  He seemed to be very sincere so
we were accommodating.  But for a week we've been calling him and
getting no answer.  His girlfriend said they got married but quickly
divorced - how such a thing could happen in 3 days I don't know. I
think we were hoodwinked."

"Beat & Release": He Called in Sick from the Beach, His Next Call May be from Jail, in Konya

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 27 March 2023)

Sait U. taking his "COVID medicine" as nurse writes his
beach blanket bingo pass.

In Konya last July, Sait U., who works in a private rehabilitation center,
told his boss Mehmet Evrim that he was ill and couldn't come to work,
sending Evrim a medical report that excused him from working for 4
days.  When Sait U. refused Evrim's offer to visit him at the "hospital"
or his home, the boss became suspicious.

Evrim found out that Sait U. had never gone to Çumra State Hospital,
although he claimed that's where his medical report came from, and, in
fact, Sait U. posted photos of himself on the beach at Mersin on social
media (!).  This prompted Evrim to file a criminal complaint against
Sait U., whose employment was terminated.

In the Konya public prosecutor's investigation, statements were
requested from nurse Esra T., Dr. Ömer Tayyip Ç. and physiotherapist
Sait U., who stated that "on the day in question I had a bad case of
diarrhea and I was vomiting.  I thought I might have COVID so I
called my boss and said I couldn't come to work.  Then I called nurse
Esra, who told me to come to the hospital but I said that if I came I
might give her COVID so, instead, I asked her to give me a 4-day
medical excuse report.  Esra said I should have a COVID test done and
that she would talk to a doctor.  Nevertheless, an hour later she sent me
the report.  I felt better so I didn't get the COVID test done.  When the
report expired I went back to work. I didn't know what I did was a
crime." (!)

In his statement, Dr. Ömer Tayyıp Ç. said, "I don't know Sait U. and
never examined him, nor did I give him a report.  Because nurse Esra's
husband is a friend of  Sait U.'s, she told me that she prepared the report
and sent it to him."

As for nurse Esra, she stated that "on the day in question my husband's
friend Sait U. called me and said he needed a 4-day medical excuse
report.  I spoke with Dr. Ömer Tayyıp Ç. about this and when he gave
the OK I sent the report.  The doctor knew about it and I used his
signature seal."

         BEWARE! You're always under surveillance!

In the course of the investigation, visual and voice evidence was taken
from the hospital and it was determined that nurse Esra had indeed
gotten the OK from Dr. Ömer Tayyıp Ç.  However, the investigation
also showed that the three times that Sait U. called nurse Esra that day
he called her from Mersin. (!)

In the prosecutor's indictment, a sentence of up to 15 years is requested
for Sait U. for "fraud" and "being a partner in falsifying an official
document by a state worker".  As for nurse Esra and Dr. Ömer Tayyıp Ç.,
the prosecutor asked for up to 11 years in jail for each of them for
"misuse of their authority and falsifying an official document".  The
trial for all three will begin on 5 September 2023.

"Beat & Release": This Guy's Name Should be "Hopeless", Instead of "Hope", in Zonguldak

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 March 2023)

Poor Ümit hurt his hand punching. Geçmiş olsun!

In Zonguldak on 30 July 2022, Gamze Kavraz (34), a secretary at a
private company, was waiting for a friend when a person running
from a park attacked her with punches.  The attack was caught on
security cameras and assailant Ümit (21 and who's name means "hope"!)
K. was arrested the same day.  Gamze hanım's two front teeth were
broken and her face was left black and blue from Ümit's K. assault.

Ümit K. was found to have a police record of 20 previous crimes. He
explained to police that on the day of the incident, he was annoyed as
he looked at passers-by and as the result of this anger he attacked
Gamze hanım, whom he had never met before. (!)  Ümit K. couldn't
remember how many times he punched Gamze hanım.  In any case,
he was jailed for 4 months and then released on judicial supervision. (!)

However (!), the Zonguldak public prosecutor, after completing an
investigation, has filed a charge against Ümik K. for "intentional
wounding" and has asked the court for a jail sentence of from two to
six years.

"Beat & Release": Ramazan-regret for Killer Who Stoned and Dismembered Uzbek Girlfriend, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 25 March 2023)

Yes, Rıza bey, any other month would have been just fine.

In Bahçelievler district of Istanbul, at five-thirty on the morning before
last, Rıza Beler (61) told his long-time, live-in girlfriend, Uzbek Umıda
Tulkyaganova (40), that he had taken out 17,000 TL in credit.  This news
prompted an argument about their accumulated debt between the two.
So Beler killed Umıda hanım with a rock and dismembered her body,
putting the body parts in plastic bags and into the refrigerator. (!)

However (!), the noise of the argument prompted neighbors to call
police who came and found the dead woman's body parts in the
refrigerator and took Beler into custody.   It turned out that Beler had
made provisions for the murder although he regretted that he did it
during the holy month of Ramazan (!), as he explained to police in his
statement:

"I put the rock I used to kill her on the balcony three months
ago, thinking that because of our arguments I would use it sooner or
later.  We got into an argument about the credit I took out the day
before, with her saying that our house would be seized because of our
debts.  When she wouldn't stop her complaining I hit her with the rock.
She pleaded 'I love you, please don't do this!".  It took me about an
hour to kill her with the rock (!).  The next day I withdrew some money,
paid off the bank debt and had the house seizure stopped."

"I killed her during the holy month of Ramazan.  I wish I hadn't
done it in this month because it's a sin. (!)  But I don't regret it.  She
made me do it, so I wanted to kill her and I did."

Beler was jailed for the crime of "intentional murder with monstrous
emotions or inflicting torture".

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 24 March 2023)

                 Whoops! Sorry for the inconvenience...

Zeki Oğuz, who lives in Germany and who is a partner in a restaurant in
Taksim Square in Istanbul, came to Istanbul last week.  He was last seen
in Kemerburgaz in Eyüpsultan district before he disappeared.  Oğuz's
friend informed police about this and, after reviewing security camera
footage, police determined that Oğuz was kidnapped from a market in
Kemerburgaz.

However (!), police noticed another aspect of the incident reflected on
the footage - the kidnappers, who arrived at the market in a minibus,
first surrounded the wrong person for kidnapping (!).  Realizing it wasn't
Oğuz, they apologized and set him free.  When the real Oğuz emerged
from the market the suspects bundled him into the minibus and made off.
Police are continuing their efforts to rescue Oğuz.

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 23 March 2023)

                                Living up to his name.

In Esenyurt, Istanbul, yesterday at about eight-thirty in the morning
Savaş Çıkan (whose name means "war-maker" !) followed Turan
Dikmen, whom Savaş bey claimed was having an affair with his wife,
and shot him in the head on Aşık Şenlik Avenue.  Passers-by notified
the police who arrived at the scene and determined that Dikmen was
dead.  Çıkan was waiting there and surrendered to police.  He
explained to them that his wife Meral Çıkan was having an affair with
Dikmen.  Eyewitness Nedim Baskın stated, "the shooter lay in ambush,
came at the victim from behind, and shot him."

Last year in December, after an argument with her husband Meral
hanım jumped from her balcony and was seriously injured.  At first,
she said she jumped of her own accord but later changed her story,
saying that Savaş bey had thrown her off the balcony.  Savaş bey and
his brother, who was there at the time, were arrested on 1 February and
freed after giving statements.

"Beat & Release": "Inauspicious" Architectural Freak Being Razed in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 22 March 2023)

From the nouveau-freak school of architecture

The Uğurlu Apartment building in Bağcılar, Istanbul, has become
infamous on social media because it looks like two very different
buildings have been put on top of one another ("uğurlu" means
"auspicious" in Turkish !).  Destruction of the eyesore has begun
in accordance with "kentsel dönüşüm" (urban renewal to make
buildings better able to resist earthquakes.)

The 8-story Uğurlu Apartment building on Birlik Avenue in Bağcılar's
Yavuz Selim neighborhood was built in 1995. The first few floors rise
straight up but the upper floors were built with a different architecture.
Consequently, the building has become a symbol of Istanbul's awkward
architecture.  There are 14 flats in the building and 60 residents, who
have been relocated, receiving 3,500 TL per month for 48 months
while a new building is constructed.

"Beat & Release": Sub-Standard Cement Very Popular Throughout Turkey, Unfortunately :(

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 21 March 2023)

Another victim (right) of sub-standard cement.

Mehmet Raşit Koruli (42), a cement mixer driver, brought some cement
to a construction site in the Avcılar University neighborhood at 17:45
hours last Wednesday evening.  The site's chief Vedat Acar (40)
complained about the quality of the cement and an argument ensued
between the two.

In the course of the argument, Koruli grabbed a knife from his truck
and stabbed Acar behind his ear.  Acar died at a hospital and Koruli
was taken into custody by police.  In his statement, Koruli explained
that "I work as a driver for a cement company. I brought cement to the
construction site and there was an argument between me and the site's
chief about the quality of the cement.  He cursed at me and head-butted
me so I grabbed a knife from my truck and stabbed him."  Koruli was
jailed.

After the great earthquake disaster, the quality of cement in construction
projects has come on the agenda.  Yavuz Poyraz, the head of the
Structures and Ground Laboratories Association, told Hürriyet that,
Turkey-wide, the quality of 26% of samples taken from cement mixers
is below standards.  In Istanbul, this percentage is 40% (!).  Poyraz
noted that "when cement is poured at a construction site the samples
taken are tested but the results come back 28 days later.  In other
words, 26% of the cement being poured at construction sites throughout
Turkey is sub-standard and this figure is 40% in Istanbul." (ouch!)

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 20 March 2023)

Glad to have retired from the world's oldest profession.

In Istanbul, the Morals Bureau police got a tip about a gang that has been
luring women from abroad and making them engage in prostitution.
After three months of technical and physical surveillance, police
determined that the gang was operating in Fatih, Bayrampaşa, Esenler,
Zeytinburnu, Küçükçekmece, Sultangazi and Arnavutköy districts of the
city.

On 13 March an operation was conducted at 19 addresses in these
districts and 11 gang members were taken into custody.  Ten foreign
women being "employed" by the gang were freed by police.  A "customer"
was also brought to the police station to give a statement.  In related
searches, the police found 33 telephones, a tally sheet, 32,920 TL,
2,190 Euros and $1,761.  After questioning at the police station, ten of
those taken into custody were jailed and the other was freed on judicial

"Beat & Release": One Month's Unpaid Rent Sparks Deadly Stabbing Spree, in Beykoz, Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 19 March 2023)

The worst renters: impatient ones with knives.

In Beykoz, Istanbul, two years ago Mahmut Sami Evci rented Belgin
Karaca's textile store and began to conduct business.  In October 2021,
the two sides argued over a month's worth of delinquent rent and on 2
November Belgin Karaca and her daughter Sevim Merve Hocaoğlu
came to the store and parked their car in front of it.  This prompted
Evci to ask her to move the car and (of course) an argument ensued.

Belgin Karaca's son Salim Emre Hocaoğlu joined in the argument,
pulled out a knife and began attacking everyone in the store (!).  Evci,
along with his cousin Halit Evci and workshop worker Afghan
Bahram Parvizi, were injured by stab wounds.   Salim Emre Hocaoğlu
fled but was captured by police.  Meanwhile, Mahmut Sami Evci died
at the hospital he was taken to.

Salim Emre Hocaoğlu, his mother and his sister were all taken into
custody by police and the Anatolian public prosecutor asked for life
prison sentences for all three of them.  Last week a decision was
handed down by the court, whereby Salim Emre Hocaoğlu's life
sentence was reduced to 23 years 5 months and 7 days (!) because
the court couldn't determine who incited the argument first.   His
mother and sister were given prison sentences of 7 years 6 months
for aiding a murder.

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 18 March 2023)

                       "Oh! olsun." (serves him right).

In Malatya, Zeki Tuğ (39) and Canan Tuğ (38) lived together for a while
and married three years ago but problems began to arise.  Canan hanım
fıled for divorce and together with their daughter Ömür (3) she sought
refuge at women's shelters in Mersin and Hakkari.  She returned to
Malatya to talk with her husband but he chased her and Ömür away from
their house at 2 o'clock in the morning on 6 February.  The earthquake
struck two hours later.

Without anywhere else to go, Canan hanım and Ömür went to a nearby
park to spend the remainder of the night.  Consequently, when the
earthquake occurred they were out in the open, whereas Zeki bey was
crushed when the apartment building collapsed, with his body being
recovered three days later.  Canan went to Diyarbakır to live in an
AFAD (Turkish search & rescue) tent and only learned of Zeki bey's
death on 10 March, from her husband's sister.

Home is where the wash dries.

Canan hanım explained that "we couldn't get along and filed for divorce.
The night of the earthquake he said to me 'take your daughter wherever
you want, do whatever you want.' So on that cold and rainy night we
went to the park. Two hours later the earthquake occurred.  We had no
place to go but we made it to the Diyarbakır bus terminal and stayed
there for a night.  Then I called AFAD in Ankara and they had me talk
with the Diyarbakır governorate, after which I was settled into this tent.
I'd gone to women's shelters previously because of our arguments."

"I learned from my sister-in-law that my husband died in the collapse of
the building.  Of course, I didn't want to believe this.  I called my lawyer
and he told me to go to the police station, where they confirmed Zeki's
death.  I cried quite a bit at this news.  My daughter asked me why I was
crying and I told her some dust had gotten into my eyes.  I'm in a good
place now and I'm grateful to everyone who helped me."

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 17 March 2023)

Talks loudly and carries a small stick.

On Wednesday last week, a group of co-workers went to Ayvat Pond in
Kemerburgaz, Istanbul, for a picnic.  When they ran out of things to burn
for their bar-b-q they flagged down a tractor hauling wood.  After offering
the tractor driver some sausage sandwiches in exchange for wood, they
left.  However (!), the tractor driver's relatives, coming to the scene a bit
later, assumed that the group had stolen the wood and a fight ensued,
with 7 persons injured and 11 taken into custody by police.

After statements were taken in relation to charges of "intentional
wounding", "threatening", "insulting" and "violations of the firearms
law" all those in custody were released (!).

Mustafa Gündüz related that "A mustachioed man in his early 50s
came after us, cursing and screaming 'leave that wood alone!',
assuming we had stolen it.  I tried to explain that we had gotten it in
exchange for food but he started cursing in an even worse way.
When he picked up a piece of wood and came after me with it, I
went toward him.  We struggled and he told a woman, evidently his
wife, to bring his gun from their minibus. She was about to give it to
him when I tried to prevent her from doing so."

"They came after us with axes, saws and bats, even brandishing a
gun.  I counted six who were hitting me.  Then I fell to the ground
and I couldn't hear anything.  I began to shout that I needed an
ambulance but they wouldn't even let my friends come near me,
saying 'leave him, he hit our father !'  But I didn't touch anyone's
father.  They said I was drunk, too, but I got a report to prove that I
wasn't."

Gündüz added that he was able to crawl under some bushes to get
away.  He related that "I have breaks in my skull in 5 or 6 places
and at the hospital, I learned that there was some bleeding in the
brain, too. I can't hear out of my right ear and I have trouble moving
parts of my face.  I was in the hospital for 6 days and was discharged
yesterday.  In the meantime they were taken into custody but released.
If I hadn't been able to hide myself, they probably would have killed
me.  I want justice!"

On 14 March, the players of the Üsküdar American High School in
Istanbul cheered their football team's goal against Ulus Private Jewish
High School by giving the infamous Nazi salute. (!)   This prompted
great astonishment and bewilderment among the Jewish school's

Üsküdar American High School issued the following related

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 14 March 2023)

Not just alive, larger than life.

Anesthesia technicianYusuf Ökten was living in Hatay's Samandağ
district when the earthquake struck on 6 February.  Both Ökten and his
family survived, with their house remaining intact, too.  So, no one with
the surname "Ökten" died in the earthquake in Hatay.

A month after the earthquake, Yusuf Ökten went to see his fiancé in Muğla's
Ortaca district but when he tried to get a prescription filled at a pharmacy,
the Turkish government's ID system showed him as being "deceased on
6 February" (!).   Ökten promptly went to the Registry of Births office and
got the same "deceased" result. He then filed a petition with the Ortaca
public prosecutor, proving that he was very much alive, and the prosecutor
wrote to his counterpart in Hatay asking that the error be corrected.

Ökten lamented that "I went into the pharmacy to get medicines and gave
my ID number. The pharmacist checked the system and said to me 'sir,
you're dead' (!) and I got the same result when I checked with the Registry
of Births office, which had the cause of my death listed as the earthquake.
I couldn't get into the "e-devlet" (Turkish governmental records system)
and my insurance was canceled.  I got into "e-devlet" with my father's
number and it showed his child, me, as having died on 6 February 2023."

"According to e-devlet, I've been dead for a month.  Now I'm gathering
documents to prove I'm alive.  I'm supposed to get married soon but I
can't until this is straightened out.  This mess has got to be fixed."

The club's president, Levent Uğur, announced the accident on social

                        Expert Garbage Extrapolator

Ali Rıza Öner, the head of the 4T Platform (clean environment, clean
energy, clean agriculture and clean nourishment), and a waste
management expert, related that after the earthquake that devastated
11 provinces, 2.7 million people were displaced.  Öner, the business
development chief of the company ITC, which disposes of waste in
13 cities in Turkey, added that "we can estimate population increases
and decreases based on changes in the amount of garbage." (!)

"In Ankara, there has been a 600-ton increase in the daily amount of
garbage so this tells us that about 600,000 people have migrated here.
The largest increases have been in Altındağ, Keçiören, Yenimahalle
and Çankaya districts."

With regard to Antalya province, Öner explained that "there has been
a tremendous migration to Alanya district since the earthquake, with a
daily increase of about 50 tons of garb, or, in other words, an increase
in the district's population of 50,000 people.  In Antalya city there has
been a daily increase of 100 tons of garbage, meaning a population
increase of 100,000 people."

As for Istanbul, Öner stated that the city's daily production of garbage
amounts to 16,000 tons but this amount has not changed significantly
since the earthquake, indicating that the earthquake victims have shied
away from Istanbul because it, too, is in an earthquake zone.

"Beat & Release": Irresistible Turkish Men Ward Off the Northern European Blonds

Doctor of Animal Magnetism, in uniform.

Azerbaijani esthetic doctor Elvin Aliyev (32) performed an operation on
a German software engineer named Ester G., 20 years his senior, at a
private hospital in, Şişli, Istanbul.  Dr. Aliyev gave Ester G. an
appointment the following week for a check-up but when she came to
his office she locked the door and asked Aliyev "can we have coffee?"

Aliyev rejected this offer and had Ester G. leave his office.  A few months
later, an interpreter at the hospital told him that Ester G. had rented a flat
near the hospital.  Aliyev filed a complaint with the public prosecutor,
asserting that "while I was at my gym Ester G. came up to me and said
'shall we have dinner?' but I rejected this invitation.  Next, messages
began coming to my phone from an unknown number but I found out
the sender was Ester G. so I blocked the number.  She is constantly
following me and pops up wherever I am.  This woman has even come
to my front door to harass me, disturbing my peace of mind, so I am
filing this complaint."

NOTE: this is not something new. Here is a similar episode that
occurred at the Vetluga prison camp in Russia in 1917, as related
by Turkish prisoner Süleyman Tevfik Harputlu:

"Six of our friends who had escaped four months earlier chose as
their guide a pretty girl named Katerin, whose mother was French and
whose father was Russian so she spoke both those languages.  The
most handsome among the six, Hikmet Bey, was charged with
getting Katerin to fall in love with him.  Let me say here that blond
Russian girls are crazy about dark-skinned Turks.  Within a few days,
love that was artificial on one side and genuine on the other took flame
and Katerin agreed to leave her parents and elope with Hikmet Bey to
Turkey."
