Cengiz Y.'s was a bit more rudimentary but served the
purpose. He coulda been Arthur Andersenoğlu.

Anti-smuggling teams (KOM) in Kilis, on the border with Syria,
raided the home of Cengiz Y. (30) in Bulamaçlı village last May for
drugs.  The KOM team found a 250-page notebook, 500,000 TL
(about $150,000) and 2 unlicensed guns.

Examing the notebook, police saw that since 2014 Cengiz Y. had
recorded about 300 smuggling events, one by one.  In the notebook,
Cengiz Y. detailed the number and make of the cigarettes he
smuggled, as well as the amount of bribes he gave to watchmen (!).
In addition, there was a record of how much the smuggled cigarettes
were sold for and the related profit.  Cengiz Y. also noted his expenses
for transport and warehousing.

The portion of profits to Cengiz Y.'s colleagues, after expenses, was
recorded in the notebook.  Relatedly, illegal goods seized by security
forces were logged in the notebook as losses and deducted
proportionately from each smuggler's profit.

A.H., left, and kidnapper Basri, who might want to avail
himself of the treatment, too.

British citizen A.H. (55), who is of Iraqi extraction, chose Istanbul
for a hair transplant operation but got a terrifying experience instead.
A.H. lives in London and runs an international money transfer
company there.  He met an Iraqi living in Turkey on the internet
and learned about  "VIP hair transplants" available for "select
persons only" in Istanbul.

Convinced, A.H. came to Istanbul on Monday from London,
was met with VIP treatment by 4 people at Sabiha Gökçen Airport
and taken to a luxury hotel in the Elmadağ section of Şişli, Istanbul.
After enjoying the view of the city from his hotel room for a couple
of hours, 2 people arrived to take A.H. to the health center for the
hair transplant operation (!).

However, A.H. was taken instead to a home in the Gaziosmanpaşa
section of the city where he was beaten and tied up.  There, A.H.
was relieved of 5,000 euros, 1,600 Swiss francs, two luxury watches
- one a Rolex - and thrown out onto the street at 5 o'clock in the
morning.

A.H., thoroughly shaken up, took a taxi to Atatürk Airport in order
to return to London.  At the airport he told police about his ordeal
and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police reviewed video
images from the hotel in Şişli and determined the license plate
number of the car that took A.H. away.  The car was located in the
Zeytinburnu section and police apprehended Basri İleri when he
came to get the car.  Later, accomplice Ömer Akın was seized in a
hiding place and Hamdullah Yelboğa is also being sought.

Taslaman confronts Sifil with an Islamic "Pepsi Challenge"

Philosophy professor Caner Taslaman of Istanbul Technical
University and Dr. Ebubekir Sifil of Yalova University's Islamic
Knowledge Faculty participated in a live broadcast on the
HaberTürk TV channel  the night before last.

The topic of the broadcast was "Are the hadis essentially orders
in Islam?" ('hadis' are second or third-hand lessons attributed to
the Prophet Muhammed).  Prof. Taslaman asserted that the hadis
are most made-up and he added "for example, according to
Buhari (Muhammed al-Bukhari, a 9th century İslamic scholar),
it is proper to drink camel urine and our Prophet recommended
it.  God forbid! There is an illness called Middle East Respitory
Syndrome that is associated with a virus from camel urine. 40%
of patients die.  I've brought a bottle of camel urine.  If Ebubekir
bey trusts in it let him drink it."

Sifil defended the veracity of the hadis under discussion but
declined to take a drink of the camel urine offered by Taslaman.

(Milliyet Newspaper, 21 July 2017)

Dövme silme rezaleti
Scarred for life, before and after.

The tatoos she had inked on her body have become her nightmare.
Dilan Deniz Kılıç (23) of Adana had tatoos of ivy and names inked
onto her right shoulder, back and her two wrists.  Two years ago
Kılıç decided to have the tatoos removed and she went to a private
hospital in Istanbul to discuss the matter with plastic surgeon
Serkan Dinar.

On 27 April 2015 Dinar operated on Kılıç and erased the tatoos.
However, scars from the operation remained so Dinar performed a
second operation on 9 March 2017 but the scars did not go away.
Kılıç, now suffering psychological pain because of the scars, has
filed a 500,000 TL (about $150,000) suit against Dinar, asserting
that "I wanted to be free from the tatoos but I'm in a worse situation
now.  My life is a disaster!"  Dinar has filed a countersuit against
Kılıç.

The Istanbul cyber crime police unit identified an international gang
that was enabling illegal internet gambling 4 months ago and
determined that the gang's headquarters were in Esenyurt and
Büyükçekmece, Istanbul. The gang's activities have lured many
people into financial ruin and suicide.

Police determined that the gang's leader was Veysel Şahin and that the
betting operation yielded 66 million TL per month (about $25 million),
with Şahin, who lives in northern Cyprus, making about $1 billion per
year.  Police learned that Şahin intended to travel to Sivas by private
jet because his father S.Ş. (65)had fallen from a tree and injured
himself in their village in Sivas.

As Şahin was being taken into custody at Sivas Nuri Demirağ Airport,
police raided the gang's outposts and arrested 27 people.

            Bomb disposal foils wife-disposal.

In Ereğli district of Zonguldak province, a husband wanting to
scare his wife who had just filed for divorce, put a fake bomb
underneath her car.  Yeliz Ö left work at her factory job and
headed home.  But some co-workers noticed a pipe hanging
from beneath her car and told her to stop.  Further inspection
revealed that the pipe was taped to the car's undercarriage,
with wires and a battery dangling.

Yeliz Ö. ran from the car in a panic and police were called to
the scene.  The car was cordoned off by explosives experts and
what turned out to be a fake bomb was destroyed in a controlled
explosion.  The subsequent investigation found that Yeliz Ö.'s
husband Sezai Ö. had placed the fake bomb to frighten his wife
because she had opened a divorce suit against him. Sezai Ö. was
taken into custody by police.

Nasreddin Hoca figürü Konya Afyonkarahisar
Truth be told, he has looked better.

Statues of Nasreddin Hoja at a rest-stop on the Konya-Afyonkarahisar
highway have sparked a negative reaction on social media.  As a result,
Salih Akkaya, the mayor of Akşehir, has announced that his city will
obtain patent rights to Nasreddin Hoja's name and image in order to
prevent their use without permission.

Mayor Akkaya said yesterday that he had visited 4 rest-stops together
with members of a special commission formed by Akşehir city on the
matter and warned the rest-stop owners about the statues.  Akkaya said
that "we told the rest-stop owners that we would take action against
the unflattering images of Nasreddin Hoca and we asked for their help
on this issue.  They agreed.  We will begin our efforts in Akşehir and
then focus on Konya and Turkey in general."

However, Hamid Yüzgüllü, the mayor of Sivrihisar in Eskişehir
province, took exception to Mayor Akkaya's patent announcement,
saying "you can't get a patent for personalities that the world essentially
owns.  There's no precedent for such a thing.  We are working with the
Culture and Tourism Ministry with regard to Nasreddin Hoja's image
and personality. It has been scientifically proven that Nasreddin Hoja
was from Sivrihisar, where he was born and died. Noone can get a
patent on Nasreddin Hoja!"

Last minute replacements: All the girls were down the street
at Hooters.

The incident occurred in a bar owned by Selamettin Yılmaz (52) on
Çarşı Avenue in Ölüdeniz neighborhood of Fethiye on 11 July.  Young
boys B.A. and H.B.,excited by the music in the bar frequented mostly
by British tourists, came in, jumped on top of the bar, took
off their t-shirts and started dancing.

The dancing boys drew the attention and applause of the bar patrons,
one of whom posted a picture of the scene on social media with the
caption "Young boys made to dance half-naked on top of a bar as the
deviant customers looked on."

Somewhat older Gendarmerie soldiers replaced the boys.

The Ölüdeniz Gendarmerie post's investigation of the incident is
continuing and the district chief has opened an inquiry, as well.
Meanwhile the bar has been closed for 30 days for allowing children
under 18 to enter a place where alcohol was being sold.  Bar owner
Yılmaz had to send his 28 employees home, while his fellow store-
owners on the street protested that the closure penalty was much too
